Fixing the numerous iTunes Exclamation Point's

I have numerous exclamation mark's on my music files, the problem is i have the music files with the exclamation mark's in several different locations on my computer, many of them on a external drive. Is there a third party application that i could help iTunes locate the music files on my computer so i can remove the several hundred exclamation marks? Thanks!

Remove missing tracks isn't as useful as fixing them...

If you can list a sample track the script isn't finding and its true location I might be able to tweak things.

Is it the same error? Are you selecting just the broken tracks to work with now?

Lost & Found

Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist (it may take some time to count the tracks that are to be dropped). Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist.

You should be able to focus the repair effort on the tracks that still need repairing. You can drag things into Found once they are...

Hi Lance.

Here's an earlier thread regarding the script which may shed some light on what it is supposed to do...

I don't want any personal information but sometimes it is easier to work with real values in case you and I have different opinions of how to describe something generically. For instance my library is at D:\iTunes, the media folder is D:\iTunes\iTunes Media and the music is at D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext>. If I were describing a typical library the iTunes folder would be at <User's Music>\iTunes or C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes.

In an ideal world iTunes would let a script ask it where it thinks a file should be, and then we could fix it with a simple search and replace operation. Unfortunately iTunes reports the location of missing files as an empty string, which means the script has to guess where to look on the basis of tag properties. iTunes has particular naming rules. If your tracks were manually organized in a different fashion from the way iTunes would do it then may be relevant to the task of tracking them down. If you read the thread you'll see I've tried hard to predict alternatives, but there will always be another way to do things that I haven't thought of yet. For significantly less than $19.99 (nothing in fact!) I'll be happy to try to work out what needs doing to the script to help it find your lost tracks systematically.

The Lost playlist should look like this...

User uploaded file

When you drag the contents of Music into Found iTunes should add only those tracks it can find into the playlist, so that the above smart playlist is then able to reveal the "Lost" tracks.

My long post there (repeated because it has been marked as a solution) describes the general process, which is to move the library folder so that it becomes the parent of the media folder, consolidate any content that is currently outside the media folder, then perform any other manipulations required so that the media folder is called iTunes Media and the library folder is called iTunes.

For specific step by step instructions I would need to know where your library & media folders are now. Library is usually <User's Music>\iTunes, the media folder is that given under Edit > Preferences > Advanced. Replace <User> instead of your user name if it appears in the library path.

Please help me with step by step instructions My Library is here... C:\Documents and Setting\User\My Documents\My Music\iTunes

My Media folder here... C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

Be advised you also helped me back up to my external using Sync Toy but when i tried to use those files to restore, i ended up with all these missing files, that back up is still sitting in my external drive, Thanks!

Right, those two paths suggest your library is where it ought to be, and the media folder is in the correct place with respect to the library folder and is called iTunes Media. Given that, I would expect the media folder to be in the correct layout, but to make sure look at File > Library > Organize Library and if Rearrange files in the folder iTunes Media is not greyed out then tick the check box and click OK.

You mentioned that you have media scattred in different locations. Does your C: drive have room for all your media or did you want to move the library to another drive before bringing in the unconsolidated files?

Do you mean Reorganize files in the folder iTunes Media? If so it's already greyed out. Yes my C drive has tons of room.
