Sep 12, 2012 3:11 AM in response to munitlvby clintonfrombirmingham,I like Canon printers/scanners personally. I've had three over the past 10 years. My 'newest' (no longer sold, I don't believe, but still supported) is a Canon Pixma MG8120. Unlike HP, Canon seems commited to supporting Macs, which is why I've stuck with them. Visit Canon on the web to compare products and then search for the least expensive price that you can find.
Just my 2¢...

Sep 12, 2012 3:11 AM in response to munitlvby Bimmer 7 Series,Have a look HERE and see if any of them fits your needs - you don't have to buy it from them - just use it for reference since they're considered as apple compatible printers.
good luck

Most all of the current printers offered by HP include OS X 10.8 support.

Oct 8, 2012 5:48 PM in response to Bimmer 7 Seriesby BlackstonMDJD,DO NOT buy an HP printer if you are using a Mac. I used an HP 4280 Printer/Scanner - it was actually GIVEN to me by the "genius" folks at the Apple store when I bought my Mac . . . as a promotion.
it worked for a while (I use a wireless network in my home) - then every time I tried to print something I got a message stating my printer was "offline." The printer was clearly turned on and working fine, and attempts to repair the problem by rebooting the computer and rebooting the printer and then reloading the printer software didn't work. Going to the HP site to troubleshoot, they offer a software "patch" for this problem, but the PATCH IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR MACS!!!!!!!!!
Don't support HP. I actually like my printer, and when it worked, it was great. But they don't give a CR*P about Mac or Mac users . . .

Oct 9, 2012 7:28 AM in response to BlackstonMDJDby silvergc,HP printers work fine if you assign a static IP address instead of using DHCP. I had a similar problem that you were seeing until I figured this out. It's been months now with no problems at all. I'm surprised that this isn't in any FAQs at HP yet.
I'm using a Photosmart 7510.

Oct 9, 2012 7:36 AM in response to BlackstonMDJDby BobTheFisherman,FWIW, my HP printer/scanner works well with my Mountain Lion and it worked well with Snow Leopard. Don't know what your problem was.
-
Oct 9, 2012 8:03 AM in response to BobTheFishermanby GarlandM,Yep, almost every HP printer will work well as long as you update via Apple Software Update. Even if it isn't supported via ASU, there are a few third party driver options such as HPIJS and Gutenprint.

Oct 15, 2012 4:32 PM in response to silvergcby WriterSurfer,Woah, sivergc! Can you offer instructions on how to do that? I've got the same problem that the person who created this thread has.
-
Oct 15, 2012 5:19 PM in response to WriterSurferby silvergc,OK, here goes. Remember that these instructions are for an HP Photosmart 7510 all-in-one wireless printer.
The first thing I did was disable the low-power sleep mode of the printer. I can't remember how to do this, but you should be able to find the information readily on the internet.
You will then need to make changes in 2 places, the printer and your router.
1) I'll proivide some screenshots below. You need to go into the printer setup and select networking. From there you get a choice for "Automatic" or "Manual". The default is Automatic. Change this to manual.
2) Provide an "IP Address" that is in the range of addresses you have selected for your home network.
3) Bring up your router manager window in Safari. Mine is a Netgear router, but yours will have similar functionality.
4) Reserve the address you picked for the printer and save the router settings.
5) You have now disabled DHCP for the printer and, in this case, assigned it an IP address of 192.168.1.110
6) Restart the printer and you should be good to go. This address is now reserved for the printer, and the DHCP server in the router will not try to assign it to anything else.

Oct 15, 2012 5:27 PM in response to silvergcby WriterSurfer,What the?! Man, you're the best for putting this up. I'll pursue it.
In the meantime, my wife had some luck. We had basically had the same experience that BlackstonMDJDhad. Our printer was great for about a week, then it wouldn't print wirelessly. So we called HP, who told us to call our local ISP. We thought we were getting the blowoff, but we did call Cox just for giggles. Well, they told us to reboot our router and cable modem and boom, it worked. Why? Well, it's just one of those things. Apparently when you do things like add new printers, upgrade to new operating systems and such, you make subtle changes to your network configurations and... aw, ****, I don't know exactly.
But I'm still swtiching from DHCP to static IP. Just to be sure.

Nov 10, 2012 12:11 AM in response to munitlvby EatDrinkSurf,I don't have a home office - nor do I have any experience in printers the way some reviewers do. When it comes to printing, all I care is that it actually prints and doesn't jam.
Printers are so inexpensive these days and my old printer was a great Cannon that did it's job - cost about 80 bucks when I purchased. Then I bought an iPad and tried ALL the free printing apps - and even paid for an app that swore it would work with any printer. NOPE.
So, when this printer came up to test - I jumped on it! WOW. Not only is it so easy to set up, even I can do it (didn't even need the disk). It prints anywhere from my iPad and my iPhone. I also love the double sided printing and never realized how much double siding printing I actually do. It's great for long recipes. The photo aspect of it is sharp and clear. I LOVE The scanner and though I rarely use a fax - it's nice to know it's available so I don't have to drive to my local media store. For the price - it's amazing.
It's also super fast compared to my Cannon and super quiet.
I've started recommending this to my friends - even though they may not do much printing - it's amazing how much you'll start printing once you have this super hero. Kind of like my Kindle - I read way more books now than I did when reading hard/paper backs!!!.

Feb 24, 2013 6:46 AM in response to EatDrinkSurfby Margaretfromayrshire,How is your printer doing? I'm thinking of getting a new printer to go with my Macbook Pro - and don't have a clue. I just bought a new Nikon camera yesterday - and would like a good quality job on the occasional photo-print - but its not the b-all. I have an old Epson DX4400 and it is slow as a snail and quality rubbish - and of course its not wireless.

Feb 28, 2013 7:03 AM in response to munitlvby hpa1940,I have a MBP and have used three different wireless HP printers and have never caused a problem. However, in setup, I put in an IP address.

Feb 28, 2013 7:09 AM in response to munitlvby SwankPeRFection,Rule #1 for network based printers (especially if they don't support Bonjour as a protocol).... Put in a static IP address. Everything else will work as long as the drivers for it are supported on Mac.
Also, if you really do have it stuck in your mind to buy a new printer, might as well go for an HP e-Print capable printer. Those printers will also support the necessary protocols to do AirPrinting from iOS devices. By buying a printer that has these additional capabilities, you're maximizing your dollars spent and you will not have a printer that works natively with both OSX and iOS.
