Rule #1 for network based printers (especially if they don't support Bonjour as a protocol).... Put in a static IP address. Everything else will work as long as the drivers for it are supported on Mac.

Also, if you really do have it stuck in your mind to buy a new printer, might as well go for an HP e-Print capable printer. Those printers will also support the necessary protocols to do AirPrinting from iOS devices. By buying a printer that has these additional capabilities, you're maximizing your dollars spent and you will not have a printer that works natively with both OSX and iOS.

Haven't used an Epson in years, and was amazed by the high ratings. Well the ratings just barely express the quality of this machine. I am absolutely blown away with the performance and integration of this unit.
I am fairly technical but if you aren't then don't worry about it. This printer sets up in moments, is really fast and super easy to understand. Color is terrific and overall it's a solid printer. Came in a huge box but after unpacking it's the perfect size machine for a busy home office. It's a solid machine that seems built to last. It supports airprint! That is awesome for us iPad fiends, lol. So long crappy Brother, and HP. Epson is back in town!

I would be very grateful if you could post this again in another way as i just cant quite work out what you advise! I am stuck on section 2. Once i turn printer to manual ip address do I type in the printers ip address into my macbook in the add printer bit or into my router hub manager? i would be v grateful for your help as this is very time consuming and frustrating!

my printer should be compatible as its HP pro8600

All you have to do is just assign a private IP to the printer. This IP must be within the subnet range as your existing private network. So, if your private network now is 192.168.1.0-254 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0, then just assign the printer an IP outside of the DHCP range. If your DHCP range is 2-254 for some reason, which can happen with default configs, then just assign the printer a high IP like 192.168.1.201. Additionally, I would also suggest you go to the config of your router and just modify the DHCP range to exclude that IP, so you'd change the range to 2-200 or 100-200 whatever. This guarantees that 201 address won't be automatically assigned to something else on the network, which is still fairly unlikely with such a large range and a small home network with only a few devices. The IP assignment is all done on the printer itself. Once that's done, the Mac will show that printer on the list of available printers when you hit the + sign on the add printer screen in System Preferences/Printers.

You can try here, they split things up to different types of printers. Personally, for color I like the Canons, and prefer the Brother for laser printers. I've had better experience with them. I started out with HP and the bigger ones that are used for offices work quite well, but I've had less success with theier personal printers.

Hoping someone may be able to help me get my printer working. I had random problems on our Macbook in the past but always got it magically working again. We just bought a new Mac Mini & I really don't want to buy a new printer-we haven't used this one enough to justify me getting a new one...

Running with Mac OS X 10.8.4

Printer HP Photosmart C4599 all-in-one

(yes my printer is several years old but we haven't used it that much so it should have plenty of life left...please don't just suggest me etting a new one)

I've tried reinstalling it several times, then uninstalling it & reinstalling it.... tried downloading new updates & various 'solutions' from both apple & hp with no luck.... I'm at my wits end & have no idea how to fix the problem.

If you think you may be able to help, here's the downlow with the situation....

My computer will recognize the printer. I currently have it hooked via usb since we got the mini, but before on the macbook it was connected through wifi (don't know if that matters, just giving background) It will print the "test" page, but it isn't recoginzing the "test" pge when I try to scan...And no I'm so frustrated I haven't tried to scan anything else like a photo etc since the new computer. It will also print the "cleaning" pages to clean out the ink cartidges. However, when I tried to print out a doc from word it only printed out somekind of colored blocks that were on an unfinished doc. And I tried to print a coloring page for my daughter from the web, but it only printed out the websites logo located on the bottom left of the page.... Seems very strange to me that it recognizes part of a doc but not all.....Maybe I'm doing something wrong?? But I've never had this much trouble out of a printer before.... Help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance 🙂

I have a Canon Pixma MX870 and am having the same issue as others. My printer is always, "offline" and will not connect withj my Mac. It worked fine for months but just stopped....

I am not a computer person per se as in able to fix things easily. I was going to go buy a new printer but sounds like if I set up this special IP address it may work ?

I am searching for an easy All in One for our Mac as well. I have an office full of Macs and we just bought a brand new HP and are having all kinds of problems getting all of the features to work, mainly scanning. Printing and faxing are fine, but we paid for all of the features to work, not just 2 our of 3. I have gone thorugh the run around on all the fixes and am still trying to fix it and have more time than I'd like to spend on resolving an issue on a brand new machine. The fact that all the solutions presented above for the same problem are different is very telling that if you do run into a problem with HP, don't count on an easy quick fix. You will have to be a detective and find the solution on your own. In this day and age, it shouldn't be this way. You should be able to turn the printer on, hook it up wirelessly and the rest should be easy, not a complex set of entering in IP addresses, turning settings on/off, installing/re-installing etc. On the flip side, I have an older HP 7310 all in one that works great, scanning and all.

Anyway, if anyone has a suggestion on a good all in one printer that I can setup easily on a Mac, I'd like to hear. We also had an epson printer only that worked great, but the print heads broke less than a year in and Epson's response was to go buy another printer.

Thanks, I did go out and get this unit. Excellent so far. Only gripe is that if you put something in the scanner and want to "Scan to Email", it doesn't seem to work. That's the same problem I'm having with a brand new HP at work too. My old HP does it and it's great because you put a document in the scanner and select the option and it pops up attached in an email. Super easy. I woud definitely recommend this unit though. It's not perfect, but much better than the HP. HP is dead to me.
