Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I live in the Caribbean and I have to buy my phones unlocked to work with my carrier. So will I be able to use an iPhone 5 unlocked? Also can a nano sim be programmed like a normal one because I was wondering if I could supply my carrier with the sim and if they could just program it for me seeing that they don't sell nano sims.
As with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 will eventually be sold as unlocked by Apple. With the iPhone 4S, this became available about a month after the carrier locked versions were released. I don't believe Apple has released a date when the unlocked version for the iPhone 5 will be available.
I don't believe a SIM card is included with the unlocked version. If a SIM card is included, your carrier cannot program a SIM card provided by another carrier. If your carrier doesn't have a nano-SIM card, you will need to cut down an existing micro-SIM card that is activated with the carrier.
Unlocked iPhone 5 is already available on Apple's site. However, it will not come with a nano sim card, & Apple does not sell sim cards. Don't know what to suggest in order to get one. Not easy to cut down a regular sim, as the nano sim is thinner...you'd have to figure out how to sand down a regular sim, as well as cut it down.
Wait did you just say the unlocked iPhone 5 is available for purchase?
No, I said "availble" on Apple's site...perhaps a bad choice of words...I mean it is shown, with prices, but is not availble for pre-order.
Oh, i was a bit confused. Might you happen to know about how long will I have to wait to get an unlocked iphone 5?
If past history holds true, unlocked iPhone will first be made available in places where such is required by law or that is the only model Apple sells. Once those pre-orders are satisfied, it should show up for sale in the US. So, perhaps a month or so after launch date.
And in cases like that, does apple announce an official date or do they just add that option on the purchse page?
They never have in the past, it just apperas in stores or availble for order online.

Gone now...was briefly there just before ordering began. Perhaps removed, because there are none available in the US. Prices shown were:
$649, $749, & $849.
That's interesting, I'm in the uk(GMT + 0), I ordered my an unlocked 32gb iPhone Black & Slate for £600 I think, but it was definitely unlocked.
Just need to figure out what I'm gonna do about the SIM card.
Ah, that makes sense, because Cnet had a similar article linked to the site and I didn't see the info anywhere. Those prices are all 100 bucks cheaper than what was being quoted most places yesterday, so that's a good thing!
