Not happy with quality of Toast Blu-ray video

I have created twenty H.264 QT movies by Sharing from FCP X. Each is a song from a band performance. I am now burning a Blu-ray video using Toast Titanium (version 11.1). The test discs I have created are disappointing. The quality degradation is not huge, like you see in going to the Internet, but it is noticeable in the skin tones.

My custom settings in Toast are:

Video format: MPEG-4 AVC

Average bit rate: 15.0 Mbps

Maximum bit rate: 20.0 Mbps

Motion estimation: Best

Re-encoding: Never

Field Dominance: Automatic

Aspect ratio: 16:9

Audio Format: PCM, 48KHz, 24-bit, stereo.

Even though I set it to "Never" re-encode, Toast is re-encoding when I burn. I tried going to a Disc Image rather than a Blu-ray disc just to see what would happen, and in this case it multiplexed rather than re-encoded, and this went much faster.

Questions:

1. Are there different settings you would recommend?

2. Why is Toast re-encoding when I tell it to "Never" re-encode? Since the QT movies are H.264, 48 KHz 24-bit PCM audio, what exactly is it re-encoding?

3. Is there a better way to make high quality Blu-ray videos, using something other than Toast?

I've been pulling my hair out for days encoding, "Share"ing, Exporting... Everything but burning a BluRay. I've been editing my film about The Appalachian Trail and, in the beginning, I recall using the Share function in FCP7 and burning an outstanding looking BluRay. Suddenly, it stopped. Errors and issues. At some point I turned to Toast 11(with BluRay Plugin). I burnt my HD project BluRays via Toast several times and didn't realize how bad the quality truly was after it's ****** encoding until I started color correcting. I brought out those shadows and suddenly the flickering and artifacts became wayyyy too much(flesh tones were awful, fade-to-blacks terrible, and epic shots ruined with flickering). I dug and dug and dug through forums hopelessly. Emailed strangers and went through so so so many tests(Anti-Alias on/off, Create Disk work arounds, Compressor->MPEG2->MPEG Streamclip, etc.). However, I think I came up with a solution for a lot of peoples' problems that does not appear to be in any of the 50 other forums I so carefully studied. I really hope it doesn't JUST work for me.

Okay, again, FCP 7. How to burn a BluRay when all that other garbage that works for other people and not you; try this:

Step 1:

Uninstall and Reinstall Compressor AND Qmaster with FSC Remover. This should reallign it's communication with FCP7(Pretty sure you can try all this on FCPX too), but not entirely. You'll still have Share'ing problems. Wait for it...

Step 2:

Export your project on your Timeline to a Self Contained file. For my case, It becomes:

Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM, Timecode

2 Audio Channels

Step 3:

Start a brand new sequence in FCP and drop the Self Contained file on the Timeline. One big clip. In my case, 95 minutes long.

Step 4:

Share-> BluRay. Drop a picture in there for the menu if you want.

Step 5:

Let Compressor do it's thing in the background. It's good to open Batch Monitor to track it's progress.

Yes, it will take a little while, but it's worth every bit of detail in the HD BluRay.

It seems to me, a lot of the errors in Sharing come from Qmaster and Compressor not getting along with FCP IN ADDITION to corrupt files in the Timeline; files that seem impossible to locate or define. So, making it one, huge uncompressed, self contained file there is nothing to get corrupt and the errors should subside.

So yeah, after days of research and complete lost hope I found this workaround and couldn't believe it when that tray popped out at me from FCP/Create Disk and told me to insert a blank BluRay. Much less when it got past 95% AND completed. I rushed to my BluRay player and was more than thrilled to see what I knew this film was supposed to look like.

Note: Audio sounded great, but as far as Dolby Surround sound and stuff, I don't know if this is the best way for optimal audio. I couldn't tell a difference but I also couldn't tell you for sure.

Please, someone try this and let me know if it works for you. I really hope it helps!
