iTunes freezes when playing any kind of video

Up until a little while ago I was able to use iTunes to stream movie trailers, watch video podcasts, and watch movies saved in my library. For some reason now I am unable to.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Quicktime and iTunes, and I have even tried using older versions of both of these.

I can play videos in Quicktime OK, but not in iTunes.

The moment I hit "play", iTunes freezes. This happens with ANY kind of video (ie. podcasts, streaming, trailers, local videos, etc.)

Videos I used to once be able to play I cannot.

I have synced some of the videos to my iphone and they play fine on it, so the format is correct.

Any help would be great.

Add me to the list. Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Running iTunes 11.0.1.12.

Videos were working a few days ago, now when I start any movies or TV Shows downloaded from the iTunes store from inside iTunes, they open a window to a black screen and nothing else happens. No sound, no video, but the playhead time indicator keeps increasing as if the movie is actually playing.

If I open the .m4v file directly in QuickTime, I can see and hear the movie perfectly. This is a bug in iTunes for sure as I haven't changed any other software or hardware on my PC in weeks (and the video playback was working a few days ago).

I wonder if it is something to do with the change of the calendar year to 2013? (just a pure guess on my part).

I would like a fix for this soon.

Apple, please help!

I've had this problem for months now with no end in site or any capable apple assitance. Audio plays, video locks in the first frame. Quicktime is fine, iTunes? Complete clownshoes. You'd think Applewpuldn't release a product that can completly drop the ball on this most basic of functions, playing their own videos! Apple reps wanna chime in here, or maybe fix your software?

I have just abot the same issue. When ever I try to open or play any type of video, movie or podcast then all of itunes frezes and I can't ge it to respond at all without fulling exiting it by doing ctrl+alt+delete and exiting it by force though task management.

Podcasts, movies, trailers, ect. easily play on my iPod but never on my new laptop.

I have Windows 7 with everything up to date, everything in iTunes is up to date, QuickTime is up to date.

I have plentely of memory and everything on my laptop so I don't know why I can't get it to work.

Another addition to the angry mob. This is not a new problem for me; ever since iTunes 10, initiating any kind of video (TV show, movie, iTunes Store preview, music video) makes the application hang. No error message, no anything except a complete lack of responsiveness. Ever since, I've been playing iTunes videos in QuickTime (which works fine).

I've tried all kinds of "fixes", but none have worked. This is unsurprising because the fact of the matter is iTunes did work until an update. Ergo, iTunes has been broken for a lot of people since 10.0. Apple really needs to do something.

This is a disgrace to their brand.

...and yet another user with the same problems, tried the same fixes up to and including repairing Windows 7 installation, completely removing my graphics adapter then after booting back into Win 7 with the basic on-board graphics adapter, I reinstalled my Radeon HD 6850 graphics adapter with the newest driver & software update (2 days after the most recent, non-beta, driver & ATI's Catalyst Control Center update) which has left me in the EXACT same situation....immediate iTunes application hang when attempting to play ANY video. QuickTime will play the videos every time with 0 issues.

One thing that I have noticed is that it appears that most everyone I have seen who is posting with this major issue of one of iTunes core features, which has been a part of iTunes either from the start or close to it I will add, have a few common items in our system configurations. Nearly everyone whom I have seen post their system specs & are having the exact same issues, have Windows 7 64bit or an earlier 64bit version of Windows running multi-core Intel i series CPU's. I have not paid attention to how many others are running ATI/AMD Radeon Graphics Adapters too but I'd wager that it is probably greater than 75% of the users with this issue.

Could there be some correlation here that perhaps in the major changes to iTunes 10, which were further developed & expanded upon in the subsequent iTunes 11 series, one or more of the changes may have incompatibility issues with one or more of these components which most of us users getting this same error have in common? Although given the fact that it doesn't seem to be a vast majority of users having this issue, it seems it may be a more likely issue between the newer versions of iTunes & system configurations with a specific combination of these components.

Whatever the case may be....Apple should be spending time to resolve this issue instead of releasing more and more updates which correct other issues, often with far less of an impact to their customers, or adding new features when major issues with such a core function remains unresolved.
