Why is ATH.exe using 50% of my CPU?

This started recently, I think there was some quicktime upgrade that happened. I've rebooted my computer and the problem persists. I've found similar discussions referring to AppleMobileDeviceService, but I don't know if this is that issue or something else.

Running Windows 7 64 bit.

Only antivirus is MS security essentials and TrustedID SecureScan (made by Immunet?). TIA

Process explorer shows PID 7988

Windows 7

Marc - I'd rather have no wireless sync than one that essentially is malware on my computer. End of the day what Zippy72 said is the bottom line. I'm tired of zero support, zero action and then Apple still stands on its soapbox about being so easy to use and user friendly and virus free and all that bs that used to be true but isn't anymore.

After 1 year of zero action, support or any response whatsoever from Apple this "feature" should be taken off the feature list and put into a disclaimer/warnings list.

Like when you buy a prescription drug... "Not for people with liver desease. This product may cause heart attack, rash, vomiting, nausea. Please consult you doctor before using". Apple should put on the iphone box "Not for PC users. This product may cause 100% CPU usage, instability, complete system failure, or in extreme cases death by frustration. Please consult your IT professional before using".

You really should have used your favorite search nine before assuming there's no way to sync anything with an Android device. In fact using Winamp and any one of several other apps it's perfectly simple to sync many things. Has been sine the end of 2010. And fwiw the new blackberry can sync many things too.

So what's better, having a limited number of things that do sync perfectly without driving one's computer batty, or having something that claims to do it all and fails miserably, like iTunes?

And that's different to Apple providing something that is deficient in exactly what fashion? You appear to overlook that there are numerous manufacturers using android instead of just one line of products as done by Apple. How complicated can it be to fix the sloppy coding that causes this?

But you as an obvious fan of Apple, are taking the normal path justifying their total lack of attention to a customer base by saying "well nobody else really has it". The issue is they advertise it, it's there, it's totally broken for the majority of people who use it.

And as I've said before in this thread, while iTunes is free, apple products to be brutally frank are priced at a premium. That used to include better customer service and attention to matters like this. These days not so much as the focus tends to be more on rolling out new hardware that at the same time makes older equipment obsolete to newer upgrades. Continuing this path will ultimately affect apple's value as a manufacture because people will start to ponder the sanity of updating equipment that's two years old when there are issues unresolved for existing equipment.

We're not disputing whether Android provides the same facilities as iOS, what we are disputing is whether that is in fact relevant. Syncing isn't a selling point of Android, openness, the ability to customise Android - to even download the source code for yourself and customise it (hence the existence of Cyanogen Mod).

Because Apple don't provide the iOS source code, does that make Android better than iOS? No, it simply shows a different focus on the part of the designers.

We're not suggesting that Apple is somehow reprehensible for providing features not seen on other systems. But what we are asking is that when they use them as a selling point to encourage us to spend money on those projects, we'd quite like those features to work. And if they don't, it would be nice if customer service take those problems seriously and fix them. THAT'S what this entire thread is about.

It's really simple. It's not Apple versus Andoid. It's the fact that Apple advertises a feature that simply does not work as advertised ever since its inception on Windows machines. The fault is a major concern as processes hog processor occupancy in certain cases up to 100% utilization. The majority of computer users are probably unaware this is even happening. The real complaint here, the real problem is Apple's absolute silence and refusal to do anything about this obvious deficiency in their product. It is sufficient motive at this point in time for people to start considering alternatives.

The bottom line is that Apple ignores Windows functionality because they can. I know if money were no object, I'd go Office Space on this PC and pop in a nice top of the line Apple that could actually handle managing large amounts of media. Whether it's iTunes or otherwise, PCs are not capable of handling what Apple can in the media world.

I've been a PC supporter for many years, but it's just not the right tool for the job when people house their entire music/picture/video collection in their computer rather than on physical storage devices (CDs, DVDs, etc.).

Here's a pretty simple solution.. I have turned off wireless sync, and when I want to sync with my iphone wirelessly, I can just turn that feature on again.

I'm having the same problem as well. Win 7 Home 64-bit. itunes 11.0.3.42.

I've been having similiar issues with the process: AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe (32) taking 10% cpu since I downloaded itunes 2 years ago. Never had problems with ATM.exe until totday. ATM.exe now having using 30% cpu was enough for me to find this forum and realize that both issues were probably related to disable the wireless syncing feature.

When searching google for ATM.exe I expected it to be malware not Apple.

After disabling wireless sync, my CPU usage dropped and shortly there-after my CPU cooling fan turned off. I wonder how many PCs in the world are consuming extra power due to this software bug?
