Also experiencing this problem. Please post a fix if you find one.
I have the same issue. It doesn't come up in widescreen either. Why wouldn't it be widescreen?
Same here, on hold with customer support back and forth for an hour now. They want to refund me the money but I got screwed the last time I agreed to that when Pulp Fiction in HD was on sale. Its obviously the file(s) because other itunes purchased movies are working with subs fine. Call snd complain and don't agree to a refund unless they guarantee that you will be able to purchase the movie once they refund you,
I have found a resolution. By default the subtitle track is off.
Step 1) While the movie is playing, turn on subtitles, but select a language other than english, I chose Danish.
Step 2) Allow the Subtitle Menu to time out and disappear.
Step 2) Open the subtitle menu again and turn the subtitles off.
All 3 steps can be done while the movie is automatically paused. The result, no more iOS Video Player subtitles. For what it's worth the subtitles that are burned into the movie shouldn't be there so it isn't Apple that messed this up.
This does not work. See the already created thread.

Reported issue to apple via email. At first got generic, unhelpful response. My second email requested a refund and this has been granted. Apple said they are looking into the problem and if I downoload the file again in 2-3 weeks the problem should be resolved by then.
The issue has been fixed. Just a simple redownload from the cloud is needed. Make sure you delete the copy in the itunes library before redownloading. Heres the email I got today:
Dear iTunes Customer,
Thank you for downloading the movie The Avengers. Unfortunately, the movie you received may have had issues with the subtitles. We have corrected the problem and a new copy is available to download, free of charge. To receive the new version, please re-download the title from iTunes.
Before downloading the new version, remove the current version:
1) Open iTunes on your computer.
2) Click on your Movies library.
3) Click the movie to select it, and press the Delete key.
4) Click Delete Movie and then click Move to Trash.
To download the new version:
1) Sign into the iTunes Store.
2) Click Purchased on the right side in the iTunes Store under the QUICK LINKS section.
3) Click on Movies and select the movie you want to download.
4) Click the Cloud download icon to download the movie.
You will now have an updated version of the movie in your Movies Library.

Downloaded James Bond From Russia with Love HD the other day. Noticed subtitles from time to time as some have noticed on other movies. Wondering when this issue with this and other films will be fixed so that I can download the movie again without subtitles. I contacted Apple customer support, left feedback, and have gotten my money refunded, but I'd like the movie if I knew when it would be fixed. (Btw, I tried toggling subtitles on/off but that didn't work.) How can we know if/when Apple fixes this issue?
