Q: How do I sync iPhone 5 with Mac G5 OS 10.5.8?

Sep 19, 2012 7:13 PMby djtnyc,I am normally a big fan of Apple and their products, and have spent many thousands of dollars for decades purchasing and wrestling with their update paths.
I just came back from my second trip to the Apple store today, after having made an appointment earlier today to talk to an Apple genius.
My question is very focused, after having been reading Q and A and suggestions at forumsclikecthis one: What exactlly can I sync and what can't I sync between my iPad which is stuck at iOS 5 on my legacy G5 Mac, with the new iPhone 5 I pre-ordered last Wednesday at 4:00 AM?
To be shipped this Friday.
The "geniuses" are overwhelmed by customers, and in the sixty seconds he was generious enough to bestow on me, he spent it rushing me impatiently and finally saying he had no more time, and would have to get back to me. The concierge spent all his time trying to sell me more Mac equipment rather than on why I was there. I made this evening appointment 6 hours earlier online.
Suffice it to say, the "geniuses" are worthless. And I am very disappointed with Apple's unwillingness to help customers make their new products compatible with their legacy systems.
Frankly, I left that store with a very bad taste in my mouth over this shoddy treatment. I've spent hours trying to find anwsers to pretty **** basic questions. What can I sync and what can't I sync on the iPhone 5 with different OS's.? And HOW do I sync what I can sync?
Duh? Screw Apple. I am so ****** at them I am seriously thinking of just cacnelling the iphone 5 order. I don't the **** thing.

Just got my iPhone 5 and realized I can't put all my music on my phone (except what I bought on iTunes) because I still love my good old G5 and can't upgrade the OS neither iTunes. At least it works well for photos with iPhoto but everything else, i'm screwed... Looks like i'll have to upgrade...

I'm having to hunt for it on other sites like Amazon and they are selling it at a ridiculous price. So much for apple rewarding thier loyal fans. What's the point of buying any content for my iPhone 5 if I can't sync it to my computer? Buying apps, music, media, etc on the phone is terrible! I always buy things on my computer then sync them to my phone. Won't be doing that until I update my OS on my computer or return my iPhone and go for a Galaxy. Ugggggggg......

Apple has continuously disappointed me with their unwillingness to support users who buy their product but do not upgrade. It happened right after I bought a 3k+ 17" titanium PowerBook. It happened with my iPhone 3G. I'm starting to think droids and pcs are the smarter way to go. Cant easily merge my iPhone 3G or my 24" iMac (or my PowerBook <--less than 10 years old) contacts to new iPhone 5. Can't move my music that I own to the new iPhone. Just bought an iPad for my wife. Can't move anything to that either. Might be time to switch to Microsoft and google :-(

Bottomline:
If you get an iphone 5 which has iOS 6 presinstalled, or have another Apple mobile device such as an iPad 2, and you upgrade it to iOS6, you cannot access iTunes and synch all your content (ie., images and music) that way unless you have a Mac running a minimum of iTunes 10.7 and Snow Leopard OS 10.6.8. Because otherwise OS 10.5.8 Leopard on a G5, like mine, is toast.
What you can do:
If you aleady have an iPad or other Apple rmobile device that is backed up in iCloud, and if you set the iTunes setting for that device before hand to "back up to the cloud" then you can sync your Calendar, Contacts, and Bookmarks to another linked iOS device.
And you can also download any purchased Apps, music or other content from your iTunes account directly to your new iPod online vis Wi-fi. But you can't plug any iPhone 5 or iOS 6 device into your Mac and sync the saved content. Unless you have an Intel Mac running at least Snow Leopard.
You need to upgrade your Mac system to run a later version of iTunes to do that going forward.

Here's your new iphone, look at all the new features... pity the standard ones like puting music on your phone are gone.

Sep 25, 2012 12:40 PMby Jake25uk,I had this problem when I had a g4 quicksilver and bought a iphone 4 which would not work with tiger and my mac was not powerful enough to run leopard in the end I had to hack the firm wear to make leopard install, obviously with a totally different processor this cannot be done this time, I now have a g5 and am getting an iphone 5 as I have a intel iMac at work which I will use,
Apparently once installed ios6 will sync with a PowerPC mac but not install or sync with the iphone 5 (this is down to the new connector not new iOS).
So annoying as a g5 is more than powerful enough (it's only copying stuff to a phone ffs)

Did you happen to ask Apple how iTunes 10.7 is too advanced for OS X 10.5.8 which was released 3 years ago, but it's not too advanced for Windows XP, which was released 11 years ago? I guess I had it wrong all along, when I bought my Power Mac for $2000 I really should have just bought a PC for a quarter of that because Windows XP is obviously more advanced than what my Mac with dual 2.0 Ghz processors, 16 GB RAM, and 2 TB harddrives is capable of running.

I do not understand why there should be an issue in syncing the iPhone 5 with my faithful iBook G4.
There is probably a very simple and logical explanation to why this is?
My Mac is running OSX 10.5.8 (Leopard)
iTunes 10.6.3 knows the device has been plugged in, as it prompts me to upgrade to iTunes 10.7, which obviously I cannot do.
iPhoto '08 also recognizes the iPhone 5. This is the area which confuses me. I can extract my photo's and video to my iBook effortlessly.
Then for another test, I downloaded a free trial of iPhone to Mac Transfer, which is compatible with PPC and Leopard.
This software showed all the content of my iPhone 5, but that's it before it bombs out. It also shows my phone as being the iPhone 4.
Is it the case that you can pull stuff from the iPhone 5, but can't send data to the device?
