I just tried upgrading my iPhone 4S and put it on regular charge. After downloading and trying to restart, it went into recovery mode and was unable to boot up. It showed the "Connect to itunes" sign. I connected it to my Mac and am trying to recover it.. iOS6 is being downloaded by the new itunes for upgrade.. hoping that I do not lose any data.. and keeping fingers crossed.

Did others have a similar issue?

Its a factory unlocked phone bought in HK and the only problem could have been a full memory possibly..

Same here, although mine said unable to restore so booked a 'Genius' appoitment for tomorrow.

To say I'm furious is an understatement!

I'm downloading the update now and hope I don't have the same issue. I am at work, not near my main computer with my primary iTunes account. I have a PC here with iTunes, but it's not the one I sync with. Do you think I will have to plug the phone into my home computer to get it work after the upgrade?

Its still downloading the upgrade on my computer.. I hope it eventually restores. Otherwise, its going to be painful.. I am in India now and there are no "Genius"es here.

!! Its trying to restore from a backup and as my iCloud backup was old (9 months old) because iCloud was full even after buying extra 10GB there, and I hadn't backed it up to itunes for a year.. I am going to lose a whole lot of data/photos/etc..

    Apple, you've let me down!

I'm having the same problem. Not sure how to recover it though without using iTunes but iTunes won't do anything since it's in 'Recovery Mode'.

You'll have to use iTunes. The new iTunes will let you restore the phone.

Mines not working either - iPad upgraded OTA - i did the iPhone Via iTunes and it keeps going into recovery, maybe its a bad file - try deleting the download + downloading it again, im about to try that!

Just attempted to recover it a 3rd time and it worked , didnt even have to download the file again, keep recovering and it should work

I have a similar issue. My iPhone 3GS is now hopelessly bricked after trying to update to iOS6. I always thought that after iOS5, there was no need to connect to iTunes anymore but alas, my iPhone wants me to connect to iTunes to reinstall the whole shebang.

This is not the kind of behavior I expect of a 500 dollar phone. That said, I think we should pinpoint the cause so here are some additional questions:

    - When you upgraded, how much charge was left in your iPhone's battery?

    - Did you upgrade your iPhone while it was connected to a Mac via USB?

    - What type of iPhone do you have?

Same thing here with iPad. I just lost all my pictures etc!

I also have a problem with my 3GS. It crashed mid-installation and now it is just blinking on and off when I connect it to my computer. The computer won’t even register that it is there

My iPad 2 has been cycling through the download to device to entering recovery mode having tried to upgrade from IOS 5.1.1 to IOS 6.0. I did a backup to iTunes just before disconnecting and doing the upgrade from the device while plugged in to the mains.

Same here, after upgrading over wifi connected with cable for power, the iPhone showed the plug into itunes ikon afterwards, while connected to itunes it states it needs to restore and the restore fails.

Im on my 3rd attempt now. How can they not make these updates to work, it's quite critical...and its the most popular smartphone in the world...

No, I'm quite furious.... its ok to loose my data since I have backup on all but... I can't even get into the phone to place a call jeezz

    apple u suck...

Updated over WiFi, plugged into USB cable to work computer for power.  I do not sync with iTunes to that computer.  I do not backup to iCloud because my backup is too large and I don't want to spend the extra money.  I did a full sync and backup last night to my home computer where I always sync.

Download of the OS went fine, verified, etc, when it restarted, the progress bar under the Apple logo got to about 10% and the plug into iTunes graphic came up.

Drove home from work, plugged into home computer and iTunes said it was in recovery mode and needed to download new software.  iTunes downloaded iOS 6, restored the software and verified a bunch of stuff.  Phone restarted and it booted like a fresh phone,  brand new.  Went through the first few steps, then told it I wanted to restore from an iTunes backup.  It's current restoring from that.

I also updated my iPad at work, over WiFi not plugged into any USB or power cables.  That device does backup to iCloud.  Download, install, etc all went fine.  No issues.
