iOS 6 upgrade causing recovery mode

Same thing here, with an iPhone 4. Connected to iTunes 10.7 over the iPhone cable. Backed up (thankfully), downloaded iOS6 update. The first time I tried to update it, I got an error (error 8, maybe? I don't recall. It then said I was trying to change the phone's settings, which seemed weird). The phone then went into recovery mode. Even after doing full restores, it keeps returning to recovery mode. Major fail on the iOS 6 roll out.

I had the same problems as described in the earlier posts. After my shock about my Photos I searched for a solution.

1.) Download Tiny Umbrella 6. Link is on the right site of this website http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com

2.) Install and connect iPhone

3.) Software is showing a connected iPhone in recovery mode. In the top of the software is a button "Exit Recovery" Press that

4.) My iPhone got out of recovery and seemed like to install ios 6 again. Finally it restarted with ios6

5.) All my apps was still their, but my photos wasn't. I looked at my iPhone storage and all my Phone was full of "other data"

6.) I used an iPhone File Manager to get access to my photos again...

Worked for me, but I can't gurantee that it is working for all of u guys....

Okay, I went through the restore process three times. On the third, it finally "took." So my phone is now booting up into iOS6 successfully!

Alain, did you ever get your 3gs to work after trying to update to ios 6? My 3gs just keeps getting stuck in recovery mode, dont know what to do...

Did you have to re-download the update via iTunes? What do you mean third time, what happened the other two times? Right now I'm in the middle of a restore and iTunes has decided to download iOS 6 again, despite having just done that wireless via the phone. The estimated wait time says 12 hours, which is BS.

I did not have to download it each time - I only downloaded it the one time. I'd click on restore, and iTunes would simply go through the "extracting" and installing phase. When complete, it would say that my phone is in safe mode, and I'd have to restore. I'd swear, loudly, and then repeat the restore process. I was starting up Tiny Umbrella to try EikeWeinberg's solution when my phone started up after the third restore, and it booted up to the "welcome to iphone" (or whatever) screen. So I never even completely launched Tiny Umbrella.

Same here. Ugh. Now I know I will not upgrade to another iPhone. Apple you have really let us down. I ran the update on my husband's phone with no problem. Ran mine at the same time and ended up with a phone in recovery mode. Have been in front of this stinking computer for HOURS waiting for the update to download. If this does not restore or if I lose all the pictures of my grandkids that I have saved to iCloud I am switching sides. I am converting to Android. This is ridiculous. Apple, you owe me.

FAIL AND FAIL. exact same problem here. iphone now dead and all my photos lost. thanks apple and ios 6. did succeed on my ipad but guess what: maps are ultra slow and have NO STREET VIEW! you have got to be kidding. of course, apple must have deemed street view to be approximately as useless as an undo facility when writing emails. thanks big brother apple.

Exact same problem here. Now downloading for 3rd time!!

I agree that the removed Street View functionality is a loss, but via the Google Earth app (http://itunes.apple.com/be/app/google-earth/id293622097?mt=8) you can still use Google Street View on your iPhone, albeit in a separate app.

Regarding the slowness of the apps: that's typically something you get with 1.0-software. Good piece of advice: don't upgrade immediately after a new system gets out on the shelves. And always backup backup backup. Apple obviously needs some time to iron out the wrinkles...

It's a good thing you backed up those pictures to iCloud. If you saved those pictures via Photo Stream, they will remain in the iCloud-backup system for approximately a month. It is a good idea to fire up the iPhoto application on your Mac and let the application download your grandkids' photos automatically.

That said, I noticed too that the downloads are incredibly slow. This is probably caused by the millions of Apple customers that are downloading this new version of iOS simultaneously. I always thought that Apple had enough money to pay for some huge download-serverfarms but today proved us wrong.

Yes I did. But believe me: it was cumbersome. I had to connect my iPhone to my Mac to get my phone working again.

Problem was that my iPhone got into Recovery Mode (= not good) after updating to iOS6 over-the-air. So I had to restore the phone via iTunes. It took over an hour to download and install iOS6. After installing the new system, I restored my phone's data from an iCloud-backup I made yesterday.

In short: if you haven't backed up your data recently to iCloud or iTunes before you upgrade, you will basically lose a lot of data.

I had the same issue. Luckily I was able to download the previous iPad 2 firmware.

Then I opened up iTunes. It gave me the Recovery Mode pop-up. I clicked ok. I held down Shift and then clicked Restore. I browsed to the firmware file I downloaded and selected it and the restore process went smoothly. I will not be trying iOS 6 again until they have worked out any bugs.

I am with same issue.

I downloaded TinyUmbrella software and exit from recovery mode. My phone bootup but still it is connecting to itune.

It is almost 12 hours trying to download IOS6 through Itunes. It disconnected three times in the middle and I have to start again.

I am in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Backup on itunes and icloud before you upgrade to IOS6

After 14 hours of try I was able to download IOS6 to Itunes.

Started restoring my iphone from Itunes.

Failed in the middle.
