Had the same problem. I noticed CPU usage was 100%. Killed off a stuck program of apples called ATH.exe. Then when I reconnected the phone everythine seems to work. A simple reboot of the PC would fix this as well. Its what worked for me. Now just need to figure out why itunes cannot start a session with the phone to backup despite syncing and everything else work. So much for apple ease of use!
Yeah only problem there is a bug in Itunes and this process will hang up again and again sucking up 1 core of the computer. Other threads indicate the only way to avoid this is disable wifi syncing. Really annoying apple!!!! I wonder how much power apple is wasting by this stuck process? Update please apple!
In my experience this is caused when iTunes is not running the most up to date version. Sometimes the device (phone, touch, pad) will update, and iTunes won't recognize it if it isn't updated too. With the file menu viewable in iTunes click on Check for updates. Even if it doesn't say that there is an update available you should check your version. The most current version is 12.3.4.
If it doesn't work and says that you are running the best version then something is probably wrong with the driver as someone stated already on this post. The best option to fix that is to go into control panel and uninstall iTunes, Apple Mobile Device, Bonjour and the 32 bit and 64 Apple Support Files. Then go to apple.com/iTunes and download a fresh copy of iTunes.
This error can be caused by a number of things so this won't always fix it, but it should work in most cases.

I had this problem too. Upgrading to IOS 6 didn't help for me, but I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and it seemed to work after that. That should solve your problem.
I had this problem after updating to ios6 last night (4gs, Windows7). Simply uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling worked just fine.
Thanks!
Thank you so much! I deleted the ATH.exe and it works again!🙂
Thank you, I found in running proccesses (i had 3 open). I could kill 2 with Itunes open & had to close Itunes to kill 3rd. Now I'm connected
Killing ATH.exe worked for me too, no iTunes restart needed.
Good work, Dr. Q! Worked for me, too!
Thanks Dr. Q. Worked straight away for me! 🙂
I've got this problem too. Tried uninstalling I-tunes and reinstalling, nothing changes!
Dr. Q is right. the problem is sync issue. in those countries which are not authorized by apple you will encounter to this issue so the way to bypass it is to using VPN connection(PPTP).
