iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

It's been a little over 24 hours since I disabled Safari in Restrictions and then did a hard reset and my battery drain has also ended. I turned everything back on my 4S except iCloud and Passport, things I didn't plan on using anyway. My phone is still running on the full charge from yesterday morning having used it for phone calls, texts and internet using Google Chrome.

Fingers crossed it stays the same! 🙂

My current "fix" is to prevent Safari from running. Using the System Status app, I am quickly able to see if/when the CPU usage is getting stuck above ~50%; currently it happens every time I start Safari. If I close Safari from the task bar, then power cycle, my CPU usage goes back to ~5%.

So without Safari ever having started after a power cycle, I can use Mail and other apps (including Chrome to browse the web), and so far, so good. So for now, I set Settings:General:Restrictions Safari -> Off. (Unfortunately, it means links from email no longer start web browsing.).

Fingers crossed that my iPhone power usage stays low.

As others have already mentioned, No ... Do not re-enable Safari.

This is also why you need a hard reboot after the disable, so the things running causing trouble get stopped, and don't start again since Safari is disabled.

Use Chrome for now. The only downside is that links from email and messaging don't directly open, so you have to cut and paste over to Chrome. (Apple won't let you change your default browser).

It is a better solution for me than trying to redo all my settings after a Full Reset/Restore, which based on reports may or may not work. The Safari solution is super easy to try and is a minor compromise while waiting for an Apple update to fix this.

Here's something odd. I had decided by battery problems were "fixed" since the other day I managed to get 6 hours and 40 minutes of "usage" (Maps, gaming, surfing, etc) and 14 hours and 10 minutes of with all my settings on except Bluetooth.

Today after charging my iPhone 4S up to 100% when I was about to leave my house I saw that it was down to 97% with only 1 minute of usage. At 3 minutes usage, I was at 95%. At 5 minutes of usage I was at 93%. I checked the CPU usage on the phone and it was at 20%. I killed a few background apps (including Music). This seemed to drop the CPU usage down to normal (eventually). When I got to work with 23 minutes of "usage" the phone was already at 89%. Last Friday by the time I got to work, my phone might be at 99% (normally it would be 100%).

I haven't restarted since it seems to be a bit better now as it is now at 83% after 45 minutes of usage and 3 hours and 54 minutes of Standby. Not counting the massive drain this morning (when it dropped 7% in less than 10 minutes) that's a 6% drop after 20 minutes of usage and 2 hours and 50 minutes of standby. Still not as good as it was last week.

I might have to reboot the phone if it doesn't clear up. There's definately some issues in iOS 6. Under iOS 5.1.1 I never had to reboot my iPhone. With iOS 6 I now have to reboot it every few days to clear up problems with Battery, WiFi, etc.

Possible Temporary Solution:

I followed this and other threads. Tried many things. I tried everything others mentioned except a full wipe and restore, as that didn't work for many anyways (some said it did).

Some people were pointing to processes started by Safari that kept running. So I figured why not disable Safari from starting.

Goto: Settings --> General --> Restrictions

Turn on Restrictions (make sure not to forget your restrictions passcode)

Disable Safari (I have everything enabled but Safari).

Then exit out of settings and do a reboot (your settings won't be lost)

Do this by: Hold rectangular button on top and circle button on front for 10 seconds or so until it powers off

Wait a few seconds and turn it back on.

Now Safari can't start, so if my theory is correct, neither can the other things with it causing trouble.

No browser??? Try Google Chrome or Puffin Free (which will also load Adobe Flash sites).

Please post results if this works for anyone else.

+1.

BTW, a simple power cycle (press the button on top, then swipe) seemed to work for me (as long as Safari was no longer in the list of running tasks).
