iOS 6 iPhone 4s battery drain

Did an OTA update to iOS 6, and my iPhone 4s is draining quite quickly almost a percent every three minutes

Only apps running are Settings, Messages, Phone, and Mail, and Location Servces are on for Google, Maps, Nearby, Reminders, Safari, Siri, weather, and YP Mobile (sames as before the iOS 6 update) All apps are up to date, and restarted the phone twice. On local WiFi, with AT&T cellular service, four bars.

Phone would get warm at times as well.

Maybe it's an anomaly, else, lets see if this post grows...

OK, four hours in since clean restore on 4S fromiTunes. Excellent battery life so far. Here's what I did:

1. DId a clean restore and set up as new phone. Confirmed Wifi network connection. Added my work e-mail through Exchange and Yahoo mail. Also added about 900 songs and 10 podcasts (all via cable and not Wifi). Charged to 100%. Sent a couple of e-mails to and from to confirm e-mail works. DID NOT add any Apps (as I suspect this is where the problem is).

2. From Hour 0 to Hour 2, iPhone in stand by mode most of time. Other than a couple of checks of lock screen to see battery level, no use. Battery at 100%.

3. Hour 2 to 3. Took a photo and sent by e-mail. Battery at 99%.

4. Hour 3-3.5. Set up Bluetooth connection to car, played one song at 80% volume on iPhone internal speaker. Battery at 98%.

5. Hour 3.5. Added NY Times and Boston.com Apps via cable to Itunes (not Wifi). Read one story in each. Charged battery back to 100%. Back of phone a tiny bit warm from what feels like ordinary use of processor. Shut both apps and locked screened phone.

6. Hour 3.75. Phone on standy by for last 15 minutes. Back of case is cold. Battery at 100%. Will continue to add back apps one or two at a time.

Working Hypothesis: One or more of my Apps has a compatibility issue with iOS6, It keeps crashing and restarting, keeping processor going until battery drained. Will avoid testing Facebook (several posters have pointed to this as potential culprit) until I have reloaded and confirmed that all of my "every day" apps are working.

Hello,

I am currently an owner of an Ipod Touch 4th generation. I see you are having problems with your Ipod Touch/Ipad/Iphone/Ipod Classic, so I will try to find a solution to your problem.🙂

Before you try anything, I would suggest you to try the following things (it has helped me on my Ipod Touch 4th generation battery drain!):

  1. Do the IOS update (the one that is the latest, or if you already did, then proceed to step 2)
  2. Reset All Settings: SETTINGS>GENERAL>RESET>RESET ALL SETTINGS
  3. Use it until it dies (automatically shuts off)
  4. Plug into Charge
  5. Leave it 1.5 hours or longer after it reaches 100% --> Undisturbed (preferably overnight)
  6. Give it a few days to Calibrate

This has helped me on my Ipod Touch 4th generation, running IOS 6.0.1

Hope that helps!

If none of the above solutions work, can you please respond back ASAP as I will try to find another solution to your problem (This might even help others with the same problem!)

Cheers!

Alright. I just find it ironic that I experienced the exact same symptoms as everyone else seems to have, and a full charge/discharge cycle followed by 3 days of normal use (draining all day unlit charging at home in evening) resolved the completely incorrect battery guage readings I was getting.

6.1.2 has barely been out long enough to even perform such a process, so it's hard to believe those immediately comiń back crying "foul" have done due diligence.

Feb 21, 2013 1:02 PM in response to DemonioAzul66

I think one major point you are missing here is that iOS in and of itself is not the culprit. Apple can release 10 more versions and if your underlying cause is a corrupt installation or setting or app its not going to be fixed. Sometimes a restore and hardware calibration is needed to resolve certain issues. In essence if your Windows PC were having major problems you would assume that Windows itself is broken and one of the patch Tuesday update would resolve it? And that reinstalling Windows would not be an option so you would just wait for Microsoft to issue some fix. Sorry but thats not the way it works. I dont mean to be snoddy about it but come on surely you dont believe that your particular issue will just fix itself by some update and you dont have to do anything to address it. I guess look at it this way. if iOS itself was bad and totally the cause of the issues in this forum wouldnt you think that ALL iPhone and iPad users in the world would have the same issues? I mean we all use the exact same IOS so if IOS itself were 'broken' then no one would have working devices correct?

Sorry if this offends you as I dont mean to but its crazy how many posts there are of folks who have a particular issue (Battery life) with iOS x then x.1, x.2 , x.3, x.4 and on down the line and they report its still not fixed. Granted there are some bugs in each release maybe with some hooky option here and there but perhaps the problem is with their device or an app and not the OS itself.

Haha... I get your points, Tungsten2k. I am not unreasonable and definetely not against you or Apple. But I've been reading the discussions and since there is no Apple-generated solution yet for those of us who got it wrong with 6.1.2, getting down to partial or "maybe"-solutions is not the way to go... So I am being patient and will wait for Apple to come back with 6.1.3 or maybe 6.2... I am an Engineer, I do know about such updates and post-failure solutions. I have been in the other side as well, so I do know when to wait... Thanks for your comments!

Pizza,

This did help my iphone 4 with the battery drain issue. After I did this, my usage time and my stand by times were no longer exactly the same. At the same time, however, I turned off the "Do Not Disturb" function. Something was continually running in the background even when the phone was in stand by. Now I can go a day and a half without charging (depending on my usage) instead of half a day. Interestingly, my husband's iphone 4S never had the problem after updating to IOS6 or any of the other subsequent IOS updates.

This is what I have been posting in this thread alot. Apparently, I am spamming, when it works for me.

Here are the instructions I have:

  2. Reset All Settings: SETTINGS>GENERAL>RESET>RESET ALL SETTINGS

Also, there is an update (IOS update 6.12), should I update to it on my Ipod Touch 4th generation?

Feb 22, 2013 4:33 PM in response to javiervargas

As I mentioned in an earlier reply in this thread, my 4s was leaking badly on 6.0.1

I did reset all settings and upgraded to 6.1 then restored from the backup it had made.

While 4s battery has never been strong from the beginning, I am no longer experiencing the extreme discharge.

Current reading:

Usage:1 hr. 13 min.

Standby: 10 hours, 18 min.

Current charge remaining is 87%.

My wife's 4s is at 6.1 and holding about the same way.

I have never updated OTA.

I have never used iCloud.

I always connect to iTunes through an iMac.

Not experienced enough to suggest a fix.

I will not be upgrading beyond 6.1 until these issues sort themselves out.

Feb 22, 2013 4:40 PM in response to TimK1964

There seem to be a few people on here who think a new battery might fix this. If your battery life is noticeably worse since you installed a new iOS then it goes without saying that your battery is not the problem. Sure batteries age and their storage capacity diminishes over time but it's such a subtle process that you barely notice it. When you install a new iOS update and your battery life disappears like never before, there can be only one explanation.

I have had problems ever since I upgraded from iOS5.1 to iOS 6.0. Immediately I started having battery drain problems, phantom data useage and assistive touch problems. The iOS 6.1 update fixed my battery drain & phantom data useage problem and although I still have one or two niggles which didn't exist in iOS5.1, I am relatively happy with my iPhone. I dare not upgrade iOS again until a decent version is released. I cannot believe that they still haven't launched an o/s as stable as 5.1 despite three attempts now.

Feb 23, 2013 8:23 AM in response to DarrylR

No they won't. For many people it has been like this since 6.0 came out which from memory is about 6 months ago. We've had three or four releases since then and Apple have done nothing to solve the basic issue.

I have managed to get my 4S stable by not using location services or VoIP in the background - things that worked perfectly in iOS 5.

Although its now manageable for me, if I use reminders to set a location specific alert the battery is usually dead before I get to the location so what's the point? And remember this is using APPLE's OWN REMINDERS APP not some third party one that could be incompatible.

This is pure and simple a massive bug by Apple which they have refused to acknowledge and certainly not fixed over several releases and many months. Absolutely shockingly bad treatment of customers.

Feb 23, 2013 1:18 PM in response to Janet108

I understand but sometimes during an upgrade settings or apps or email accounts get hung up during the update process itself, seems to be worse when using over the air (OTA) instead of iTunes. So the process of updating causes it more so that the actual version is what I am saying . So again I ask have you tried it without installing any apps back? That is the only way you will know if there is some 3rd party app causing your issue. Also if the iPhone is factory fresh and still behaves this way I cannot see how Apple could refuse a replacement if they see it happening. Gmail can use exchange as well if setup that way so if yours is it could be the the root cause. I guess you have a few options. Upgrade to 6.1.2 and see if it solves it. Restore as mentioned leaving it as default to determine if the device or app is at fault, or leave it as is and live with it. At this moment there is not a lot else for you to do. Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope it works out.

Janet108 wrote:

if you read back a few dozen pages, I posted about my apple store experience. No, they didn't offer a replacement. I did go to Apple, phone is still under warranty (just for another couple days, almost a year old) and they refused to even replace it under warranty. When I went to apple, I did have some apps put back on by then and the guy watched it drain about 5% in the few minutes he had my phone in his hand, doing basically nothing with it. weird thing is that some days it does not too bad (still not as good as before all these updates), but other days it dies with barely any use (and yes, I do turn of the apps, it's become a habit now). Son's phone is the same way. I'm currently on 6.0.1 and I hesitate to update simply because I don't want it to get worse and I've not heard many good things about the latest update, not just here, but other places online.

Now I'm no techie, I'm not entirely sure what this 'exchange' thing is, but the only email I have on my phone is gmail. My son doesn't even have his email on his phone (he doesn't use email, he prefers text and messaging people on fb, teenagers...) and his phone is the same as mine in regards to losing battery. So that says to me it's something in the updates, because again, we had zero issues with either phone before the update and I've done most everything mentioned here, to both phones, to no avail.

Feb 23, 2013 10:45 PM in response to Greg Bastug1

This is just me doing my due-diligence here: Reporting that as of today (and who knows what might happen tomoorow?) the iOS6.1.2 update appears to have corrected my battery draining issue. No fancy-schmancy removals and reinstalls, no feature-crippling, no secret handshake on-off/charge-discharge magic. Just said "yes" to the "Install Now" button and all now seems to be well.

I'm back to leaving location services running, and talking and texting as necessary, and still having a comfortable +/- 24hrs of battery life on my (now!) very cool-running iPhone4 (NOT 4s). Before 6.1.2, my phone stayed noticable warm all the time, and during telephone use it would heat up to the point of becoming uncomfortable to hold in you hand... and even with location services turned completely off and not using the phone for calls at all, the battery was dead or very nearly so within 8 hours.

I'm very glad Apple fixed this.

I am STILL very ****** that the punks in my community Apple Store treated me like I was an idiot when I went in there to ask their advice... telling me there were no "known issues" with battery drain, when Apple's own hosted support forum had a thread with over 140 PAGES of complaints. For the record, Apple has always been more than fair with me; very supportive and very professional. I don't know WHAT the **** happened this time... but it had better not EVER happen again. Facebook is a powerful sales damaging tool, and if I can persuade even ONE potential MacBook customer to buy a PC instead, then at least I'll know that I've done my part to keep them honest.

Good luck to the rest of you guys! Sorry 6.1.2 didn't work for you like it did for me.

SOLVED --- IN A WAY----

OK.. Now we all agree that there is a battery problem and its after upgrading to IOS 6 and later.... I have struggled like the rest of you and still no close to resolving the problem.....

But I have a workaround that atleast solves the issue of my phone having about 50 to 70% battery when i return home in the night.....I consider this a million times better than returning home with a paper weight in my hand ( Am talking abt my iphone thats switched off)

So this is what I did, i just had a hunch that this might be a battery calibration problem since i saw battery going from 90% to 100% and in some occasions 40% to 20% and sometimes it even turns off at certain percentage of battery remaining.

Every morning I would TURN OFF my iPhone 4 for about 15 to 20 mins. And then when I turned it on it would show the correct battery %. Then i would charge it to 100% takes a max of 2 hrs. Then am good for the day...

I sometimes turning it of at night also if am planning to charge it or if am heading out and need an accurate remaining battery value...

Hope it helps someone atleast...

After doing 3 resets in a row and set up my ipad mini the battery is looking way better! 3 days standby, 5:57 min used battery % is at 67%!! Set up email, messages turned on, browsing Internet like crazy! Plus playing real racing 3 for 2/12 hours straight!

I did the three reset as new in a row back to back with 10% left, after the third one I charged it for 12 hours. Put all my apps back on from the App Store NOT from back up. I have had battery issues for months!! Fingers crossed this may have worked! I did this with no phone support, I just came up with it. I don't know why the battery is better? But I'm not complaining. I still think Apple should compensate me for the **** I've gone through. I'll call Apple and take of that after I see if my battery is still the same next week. I can leave it on over night and no battery drain.

Gonna try this with my iPod touch now.

Mar 12, 2013 3:00 PM in response to Greg Bastug1

Hi everyone. I posted on this forum about 2 or 3 weeks ago because my battery life was only lasting around 6 hours a day and I didn't think it was good enough, but I believe I've now fixed my battery issue.

I accidentally put my phone in DFU mode and left it in DFU mode for about half an hour because it strangely would not restart. Once the phone had restarted, I charged it for about 15 hours. The following day, my battery lasted around 8 hours and I was happy with this even though it's still not long.

For the next 4 days, I let my battery completely drain every night and then charged it as I slept (for about 9 hours).

Now my battery is easily lasting 12 hours a day, and there have been a few times where it has lasted over 24 hours.

Like others have said, I think the key is to let the battery drain and recharge it lots of times. I had to to this 4 times but you might have to do it 10 - it depends with each phone...

Good luck anyway!

(sorry if none of that made sense, I'm knackered typing this)

Mar 12, 2013 6:37 PM in response to JDFlood

Even though half my post never make it in the forum. The reset from iTunes three times, let battery has worked on my 4th gen iPod touch. 71% left. Usage 6:57/ standby 19 hours and 43 min. So I think that has worked great for my ipad mini and itouch, I may just update my ipad 2? Not sure yet. Do the reset from iTunes with about 10% remaining. Reset, set up, reset, set up, reset, set up, charge battery for 10 to 12 hours. This battery problem was h e double hockey sticks. But I did this on my own!! And it worked!!
