Junk mail shows one unread message but folder is empty.

Using Mail 1.3.11, POP account.

My Junk mailbox is indicating one unread message, but the folder is empty.

Since getting the G5 over a year ago (my first exposure to OS X), I've had no problems at all, and Mail (and everything else) has been remarkably stable. This is good, except that I've not really gained any practice for troubleshooting the OS X system, since nothing ever breaks. Ergo, this is all I've done to fix this problem:

Ran sudo periodic daily weekly monthly then repaired permissions. Checked for overfull mailboxes, the sent mailbox was massive (+50mb), so deleted the emails from it.

Nothing worked (obviously). In order to prevent more junk mail from the same fate, I've temporarily disabled junk mail filtering. When I enable it to check, the invisible mail is still there.

The funny (ha ha, she groans) part is, until the past week I couldn't've cared less about junk mail, but I moderate a board where I'm holding a photo contest, with submissions coming to my mailbox, and since they are from unknown addresses, they were going into the junk mailbox until I disabled the filtering.

Hello Jo.

Re-enable Junk Mail filtering and confirm Junk Mail is set to automatic.

After doing so and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account).

Within a POP type account named folder should be the following mbox files; INBOX.mbox, Drafts.mbox, Sent Messages.mbox, Deleted Messages.mbox and Junk.mbox (when Junk Mail is set to automatic).

These mbox files represent the account named mailboxes under In, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk (when Junk Mail is set to automatic) in the mailboxes drawer.

Confirm there is a Junk.mbox and not a Junk named folder.

If it appears as a folder, quit Mail first and using the Finder, change the name of the Junk named folder within the account named folder to Junk.mbox or add the .mbox extension.

Launch Mail and this should resolve the problem. This can occur when changing Junk Mail from automatic to training and back to automatic.

Regarding the size of the account's Sent mailbox, the recommended size limit for a Jaguar or Panther mailbox is 1GB so +50MB is not very large. Before I upgraded to Tiger (Tiger Mail has a recommended mailbox size limit of 2GB), I didn't allow any mailbox to exceed 500MB or so in size and I never experienced any problems.

Using the Rebuild Mailbox function on the most active mailboxes on a regular basis is a good idea - once a month or so depending on activity.
