Apple maps very disappointing

REVERT BACK TO iOS 5.

What I did was :

1. Make sure I was on itunes 10.6

2. Dowloaded iOS 5.1.1 from the link (Handy tip, when you update to iOS 6 look in the trash, iOS 5 will most likely be chucked in there like yesterday's jam...)

3. Connected my phone to itunes and put it into DFU mode (ignore warnings about not being able to sync) (ignore the warning that you need a new version of iTunes to sync this phone)

4. Held the option key down and then pressed 'restore'

5. Found the 5.1.1 download and clicked open.

6. Then let it do its work. It said Apple was verifying the update.

7. I then had to restore my phone from the back up I made before I upgraded to 6. It offered icloud or computer and I chose computer.

8. Just let it run - it then asked me for a new passcode and then went on to download all my apps/music/photos etc.

I am now back with google maps working as well as youtube. Everything is as it was 🙂

The only new feature to iOS 6 I found somewhat improved is the reject call with SMS option. But honestly I can quickly send a text after rejecting the call.

The entire point is that they have been working on this upgrade for months and then they released this piece utter rubbish. So, no, quiet frankly, we won't give them a chance. I work in the IT profession and if i had release a piece of code like this into a live environment I would expect to get fired for it.

As i mentioned before there are 2 towns in my area with wrong location (+/- 5 km). I checked them on my old TomTom (4 years old including the data) and there they are at the right position.

So, if apple has data from TomTom what went wrong and why?

I love iOS 6 but would like to see them improve the map app. Not that much wrong in my area though. Here is north Florida it seems to be just fine.

Consider this:

• Transit: Removed from 51 countries with 4.9 billion people.
• Traffic: Removed from 24 countries with 2.4 billion people.
• Street View: Removed from 40 countries with 3 billion people.

I live in Bangkok, Thailand. We lost traffic, transit, and street view and the new satellite maps are of far lower resolution. Searching for anything nearly always results in useless results. We get no flyovers (who really needs it anyway?) or turn by turn directions, as is the case with about 20 other countries.

Just scanning the new Maps app within three blocks of where I live, approximately 2/3 of the POIs that are listed are incorrect. Some were closed at least ten years ago. On the other hand, many current businesses that were listed in the iOS5 Maps are now longer listed in Maps. This is probably the case in most countries and will affect potential customers attempting to find them.

I have been using Apple computers, and then iPhone and iPad, for nearly twenty years. I have never seen such anything close to this massively failed and low quality product such as this. This will have a lasting detrimental effect on Apple, and AAPL shares last Friday showed a loss that some have attributed to the blowback from Maps.

Nothing we can do now apart from sit back and hope that Apple approves Google's new Maps app. Until then, we are essentially MapsLess, unless of course we buy an Android phone.

I don't know about the UK, and other places in Europe, but out here in California the new map program works vey well. I checked several other states, and countries in South East Asia, that I know fairly well, an they are accurate. The turn by turn works pretty well, too, here at home.

So the program seems to work well in most places. If it didn't, a lot of people would be screaming, instead of only a couple of hundred. Most of those posts are posts from the same complainers, as well.

I've also talked with several colleagues of mine around the globe and they are happy as well. It may be that some parts of he database is not up to snuff yet. Since it's a dynamic database, the accuracy, speed, etc, will only get better.

If there is a serious issue, Apple will address it as soon as they can - a little patience is needed with some folks. Anyway, I'm happy, even though I rarely ever use the Maps app - I have a near of the line Garmin, and a display built in one of the cars.

From what little I have used he Map app, Googles or otherwise, this new one is just as nice. Besides, only a fool would rely on one of these things for turn by turn, for complete accuracy. None of hem is a hundred percent accurate, and a little common sense is needed sometimes.

odd use off the color what does even mean the shads of greens ??? golf cours green but the all Unesco world heritage site forest around not even pale green ....

wrog location of towns .....

missing roads .....

and where is the suposed vectorial map still multiple zoom on different map ...

Apple who once was all about customer experience ready to hold back a product like the iphone or ipad until tech are ready ?

NFC payment world wide as done by most world oublic transport .... but not on th iphone 5 as not mature enough for apple but the new Map sorry even Nokia free navigation app was better !!!

and if people are not complaning more yet it's because the update was just relisse yesterday in europe and most people haven't done so ....

UK , France for the one i do know you have mist place town or missing one , wrong street name , strange choice of color yes turn by turn does work but only with the street present on the app not all road ..... BAD

California might be ok, and that's great for you. But as someone who lives in SE Asia (Thailand), I can tell you that the new Maps app and database is close to useless insofar as being out of date, inaccurate, and incomplete. Some of the maps here in Thailand are even black and white (not color), and most are of far lower resolution. Even the airport in Hua Hin is completely missing. Added to that, we have lost traffic and numerous other features.

I think maybe you have that reversed. Perhaps there are a couple of hundred users happy with iOS6 maps, at most. Try Googling iOS 6 Maps and have a look at the number of reports panning that app.

Glad you are happy with it, though. Do you like it better than iOS 5 Maps?

I guess I am one of the minority that thinks apple maps is way better than google maps was. At least now we have turn by turn directions instead of the text based ones and static routes that google had. I hated google maps and had the tom tom app to provide my navigation needs. Now I may delete tom tom since maps now does an excellent job of providing turn by turn directions. Street view is a novelty just like google earth is. Not very useful and if you need that much detail then you are just terrible at navigation.

Well, I can say this: it sure doesn't work in South Florida. Roads leading to malls are gone, the image of my house is at least 3 years old with two whole neighborhoods missing.

Plus, there are hardly any POIs. Seriously. A whole 1 mile radius shows....3, yes, 3 businesses, zoomed in or otherwise. I don't live in a small town. And, amazingly, if I search for a Starbucks, near my house, it "finds" it, complete with a pin, a review, and photos via yelp; however, without a search the map refuses to show it as a POI. This goes for dozens and dozens of POIs nearby. They're simply not there on the map, but magically show up only after a search.

How anyone can say this is an improvement over the old app is mind boggling. This app is simply not usable for me. Pathetic.

Same here. That's how it's working for me. I also really like the two or three route option that has miles and travel time.

I read that Apple had been advertising for Mappers, I must have misread surley it was Spammers, looking at some of these 'love it' posts.'

The turn by turn stuff is impressive... but to be honest the maps themselves are so poor compared to the old Google-supplied ones.

First of all the 3D is no match for Streetview and has so little coverage outside of a few major urban areas so as to be virtually useless.

Then the road designations and the colours used aren't consistent - at least here in Britain anyway, I haven't had a look at other countries yet. Many major routes aren't labelled with their usual designation, instead having local road names and as such being drawn on the map as local roads. Take the A14 as an example, this is a major route from the east coast to the midlands but parts of it aren't labelled as A14 and look like "back roads" on the map itself.

Then there's local businesses and the like. There seem to be several small businesses within a short distance of my house labelled as petrol stations which is clearly not the case. My local pub and chip shop which appear on Google are missing completely from the new maps and the places that are shown are a long way away from where they actually are.

There was one good thing Apple did though... Google defaults to miles in the UK and km elsewhere in Europe and won't let you change this, Apple does though.
