HDMI display issues after 10.8.2

I am writing from Turkey. I have Apple MacPro Retina Display (Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory: 8GB 1600 Mhz DDR3). After updating to version 10.8.2, I had the same problem. When I connect my External Mac Display, my MacBook Pro and Extarnal Display turn to black with enlarged arrow. I have asked to all Apple services without any help. I am very much dissappointed.

I see that this problem was first announced in September 2012. Was Apple not able to solve this problem? Apple has not officially announced this problem so far. Many people are writing their complaints but no solution! Really pity!

Try a pram reset: Power off, power on holding thr followig keys, optipon,command,P,R(no comas) continue to hold these keys before the tat chime, hold them til you hear the start chime 2 times. Release, then reboot. Al the best

Have you read through some of this long thread and tried removing /all/ the com.apple.windowserver plist files in all the directories that may have them? Different computers have differently named files, but all the files have "windowserver" and "plis"t in them.

There are several posts here that tell you exactly how to do it and which directories might be affected.

We are all frustrated with Apple on this issue, but this "fix" seems to have worked for about 95% of the people who have posted here. If it doesn't work, then you may have to try a clean install of your original OS or 10.8.2 and see if that fixes things.

As outlined I followed your method but have now run into a problem: There is No "windowserver" plist file in my preference directory. I looked over and over again, Nothing. Should I go ahead and delete the other Plist files ?

Delete only the windowserver.plist files, regardless of any other letters or numbers that may be in the name of the windowserver.plist file. There should be one in the [user]/library/Preferences/ByHost directory, which you willhave to delete. Did you find one there?

I don't know about deleting any other plist files for this problem. My understanding is that you can always delete a plist file--plist means "preference list"--and the worst it will do is force the Mac to build another one.

Alright I did all that but I still cant find anything labelled as windowserver. Whether I look in the Preferences folder or the Byhost folder there is no windowserver.

Thanks to KenV54 and sanjampet. I did Pram Reset and also deleted plist file which I have found only in library folder. But no help. Again black screen on my external display and on MacBook Pro. Do Apple Staffs not aware of these communications? Why do they not comment and help people? What do we need to do notifying them?

Today I went to see a Genius who was very friendly & helpful and explained to him the whole dilemma with my Tv & MB not acknowledging eachother via an HDMI cable yada yada yada...So he went ahead and tried just about every thinkable thing incl. trying to connect with an VGA cable which to my utter surprise actually worked ! Nevertheless the HDMI cable never connected no matter what he did. I asked him whether the cause for the problem was a software issue and his response was that most likely it was a hardware issue. At this point we both became frustrated, he then proceeded to the backroom and came back out with an Mini DisplayPort to HDTV Cable by BELIKN..AND LO AND BEHOLD: IT WORKED ! ! ! 🙂

I'm using the Mini Display Port to HDMI cable, also from Belkin, and it does work, except sound still comes out of the laptop. Do you know of a way to make the sound go to the TV, also?

Go to >System Preferences> Sound > Output. Then choose your device[TV, Projector etc]

20" Apple Cinema Display not recognised after upgrading to OS 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion).

Hello Apple! Anybody there? How long does your community have to wait for a solution?

The same problem has been unsolved for months now. No statements from Apple either.

I was told today to wait for 10.8.3. This might solve the issue. I can not belive my ears.

My MacBookPro 4,1, Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.5 GHz Processor and Graphics chip: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, will not talk to the exter. 20" Cinema Display ( Model Number A1081 ). The screen stays black. Resetting the PRAM did not help. I removed the 'com.apple.windowserver.plist' and the 'com.apple.windowserver.OE35739etc,etcxxxxxxxxxxx.plist', but that did not help either.

Any other solutions, or do I have to downgrade or give up on Apple Computers alltogether after using them for over 25 years?

Not here. This is just a user-to-user help forum. Apple has no official presence here. Have you opened a problem with Apple Support?

I'm not trying to minimize your frustration with your problem. It may turn out to have the same root cause as the HDMI problem, or it may not. Your A1081 connects with Mini-DisplayPort, as you know, so at least some of the code paths will be different.

I haven't reported in for a while regarding my MBP Pro 15 Retina HDMI to TV issue. A few months ago, i tried everything listed here to get my MBP15R HDMI output to work, but failed. At Ken's suggestion, I took to Apple Genius' and they verified it didn't work, then replaced my motherboard, but that didn't fix problem. However, I bought my wife a MBP13R for Xmas and its HDMI worked perfectly right out of the box and continues to do so even after OSX 10.8.2 upgrade. I've now given up on my MBP15R HDMI port, so just use my Belkin Thunderbolt to HDMI cable which works perfectly even with OSX 10.8.2. It really is sad, though, that won't acknowledge the problem and then fix it. I also cannot spare my computer long enough to let them tinker with it to find the problem. In any case, I tell all my friend not to buy an Apple computer if they expect to have it drive video through it's HDMI port, because this is by no means assured.

This really is a perplexing issue. I was so frustrated with this problem when I originally had the black screen with a white arrow issue after installing 10.8.2. KenV54s solution solved my problem and I have had no issues since then. My HDMI and all of my other connections to monitors work well..

This being said though, I can imagine your frustration since the KENV54 solution is not working for you and since the Apple Store people can not make your HDMI work properly. I just wanted you to know that it is possible for the HDMI to work with a MPB15R. Apple should be giving you the support that you need to work out the problem with your particular computer. I have continued to follow this thread out of curiosity.... to see if Apple ever does anything officially to address the problem.

Thank you for the response, markwmsn. I am new to this forum. You may be right with the code paths. So it might be both, software and hardware issue. I am still waiting for Apple Support to reply.
