iOS 6 update = Speaker not working properly

great, tomorrow i'll take my iphone to applecare and let them fix it.

This is the second time i encounter a problem with my iphone after it was replaced from no wifi..

I expect better from apple.😠

Hi my iphone 4s has done the exact same thing! I have had no speaker for over a week now it went off a few days after I updated my software & has not worked since! I have tried every option that has been suggested on this site and others and nothing has worked! I contacted O2 and was told to go back to the O2 shop where i bought it and ask them for advice! Thats 20 miles away! I have been a loyal Apple customer for 17 years now have an iMac, Macbook, Iphone & Apple TV! I seems since Steve Jobs Died the service and reliability is going down hill fast! Come on Apple get your finger out and sort out this fiasco.

As promised, here's my report.

I went to the Apple Store and the manager botched my appointment. Luckily, I didn't have to wait too long for the next available tech person. He looked at my phone and ran a test. His machine read that it was a hardware issue. I explained that if it's a hardware issue then the phone isn't very good because a lot of people on the Apple website are complaining about their speakers right when they update to OS 6.1.2. He said most likely it was just that their speakers were blown, too, and that sometimes new operating systems will bring out the underlying problem a phone is having.

Only because I was still under my warranty was he able to change my speakers for free. I had 27 days left. I got lucky. I still don't get how my speakers could have been working fine before the update. It's too strange to even think about. Good luck, everyone.

I have spoken to O2. They have no knowledge of any problems with speakers! As apple are the only phone company to only give a 1 year guarantee they will charge me £140 for a refurb phone they won't repair it! I said what if after I buy it there's a software update & my phone was not faulty? The answer that what happens if you buy an iPhone! You have no warranty so it's your choice what to do!

I aslo contacted a local repairer & they charge £38 to replace the speaker if it dosent work when they replace it they will refund me! But this still leaves me with a iPhone with a dead speaker!

I notice Apple jumped in on the conversation and deleted the comments about jailbreaking and getting rid of the file. Well Apple if you're quick enough to do that why don't you acknowledge this problem and at least say that you are trying to find the cause?

1) i plugged in my headphones (increased Volume to max) it showed increasing volume and i can hear sound i unplug the headphones, no volume.

2) Plug headphones, turn on Bluetooth, off for Wi-Fi, increase volume with headphones plugged in

3) remove headphones and keep pressing the up volume few times, than adjust the volume on setting to low and with the up button on side of phone increase it you will notice the volume is going up but no sound.

play a movie or something and increase the volume. It worked for me.

I did not learn from my mistake and thought 6.0.2 will definitely have fixed this issue (i had too much optimism in Apple)

speakers stopped working.

I did what any desperate person does, and no i am not paying 200 for a refurb so i can go through the same issue again, I did the one that apple deleted and said not to do, then i plugged in the headphones, increased volume, removed headphones and increased the volume and voilà it worked like a charm.

Ha ha, come on Apple. You don't see your problem with the software bug.

You don't do anything. We buy expensive IPhones and get those failure which aren't our faults.

And you still do nothing.

Believe it or not. The jailbreak help us without spending a lot of money

To refurbish phones.

Well, I too took the phone into Apple.. They said that my only option was a new refirb for 200.00... SPeaker works gret for siri & phone calls... No audio or audio control for movies, apps or music... Head set works great! I am thinking about trying to reset my phone back to prior to 6.0 upgrade... Then taking it back in to the same guy & showing him how my speakers work properly with out the upgrade installed...

frustrated that apple is not making a statement about this..

YESSS!!! Seriously, I was ready to throw my phone out the window. After updating, I had the same problems as others with no speaker volume, volume controls, or play back without the earbuds. My phone thought it was stuck in a dock. My husband did not have any problems with his phone. Perhaps it's a certain model? We both have 4s 32g. Truly annoyed that this happened because of an update. I thought Apple was better than this. Also, has anyone noticed their battery life decreasing since the latest update?

HAHAHA, joke's on me. I plugged my phone in to charge it, and the problem is still there. HAhaha, volume only works when it wants to. Seriously so annoying considering I use my phone for ipod and pandora the most. FIX THIS APPLE!!!!

take a qtip or paper towel spray the tip with windex

*warning* just light spray i mean really really light you don't want to damage the Sensors

Clean the headphones port give it a nice rub

Apple could have done much better at responding and preventing serious time waster. Not hardware.

I had a similar problem that turned out to be in part confusion on my part. It turns out that the speaker volume and headset volume are different and likewise in some VoIP apps the "speakerphone" volume is separate. Thus, if you push the volume up and then switch modes: select speakerphone, dock the phone, plug or unplug a headset, and so forth you change from one volume setting to the other. If the one you switch to is all the way dwn to zero, you get silence. Since you just turned the volume up in the other mode, you expect it to be up in this mode.

So, after you press the speakerphone button, plug in or unplug a wired headset, dock your device, turn on your Bluetooth headset or the like, try turning up the volume again, even if you think it ought to be all the way up.

I also have a suspicion that some volume settings are getting set to zero when you upgrade iOS, giving the impression that the speaker suddenly stopped working when you upgraded.

Not sure how many here this applies to, but another user and I got caught by this one with a VoIP app whose speakerphone function seemed to break with the recent iOS upgrade, so I thought I'd mention it here. Hope it helps some.

Failed again - not a permanent fix or perhaps even related. Battery drain problem started at same time. Taking iPhone in this weekend to nearest Apple store - 210 miles away. Can't miss text message audible notifications - needed for work. Basic functions should not be lost due to an upgrade, Apple.
