iOS 6 WiFi option is GREYED OUT (unrelated to iOS 6 WiFi connectivity issues)

As reported in an earlier thread, since upgrading iPhone 4S from 5.1.1 to 6, the WiFi option is turned OFF and is greyed out/disabled. Have tried all combinations of hard/soft reboots, router resets, network settings reset, cleared cookies, etc. Nothing. The WiFi option is completely disabled.

WiFi worked fine prior to iOS 6. Now I can't turn it on. My wife's WiFi is fine, she can toggle on/off and hasn't had any other connectivity issues as reported by others.

Ok Someone needs to take responsibility for this fiasco! This is clearly not just the odd case of phone failure there are a lot of us with the same issue. So can I make a suggestion? What if we all cancell the payments to our phone service prodiver - Vodaphone, O2, Orange etc in the Uk and refuse to pay until it's sorted? Sure the product is not fit for purpose under UK law, why pay for a contact with data if we can't use it?

If enough of us act, they have to do something!! Who's in?

Anyone out there qualified to advise legally on this?

Exactly! And to all who would follow that KA, after you discover that does not work and call tech support, they'll tell you to bring it to an Apple store and you will start your journey of frustration, your options, as this forum has documented, are: A) swapping out (at a cost usually to replace your phone) for a refurb handset, B) deciding to go with the freezer/ hairdryer method, C) taking it to 3rd party vendors who can replace/ reflow your wifi chip D) abandon it altogether and switch platforms.

Ok guys, believe it or not, after months my wifi IS WORKING AGAIN. And this happened tonight, at the right moment when we -here in Uruguay, UTC -3 - we roll back one hour due to day light savings policy. That's incredible but it's true: Just when the clock roll back one our, the wifi worked again. So the question is related to daylight savings. I bought my 4s unlocked but from USA AT&T late in 2010. So now, I hope it continue to work. Why Apple don't let us know this, or they didn't know? I will keep you up to date on this. Regards,

Dúnadan.

  1. Verify that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
  2. Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > ResetNetwork Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
  3. Ensure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
  4. If your issue is still unresolved, perform a software restore in iTunes.

Def works!

OK I have found a solution on the internet and it worked for me and for two other phones with the same problem.

⚠ Let me state this clear: I would have never tried anything like this, I followed this solution because I tried ANYTHING (hard and soft resets, icloud password resets and other stuff), and because Apple asked me money to fix the phone while IT IS CLEAR THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN NO WAY CAUSED BY MY USE OF THE PHONE, I just upgraded the iOS OTA (over the air, via wifi).

⚠I am taking NO RESPONSIBILITY if you break your phone or damage it.

Here is the fix:

  1. using an hair drier, you should try to overheat the phone, concentrating the flux of hot air in the back of the phone, just 1cm over the apple logo. I suggest doing this the following way: hold the phone with one hand, using a glove or a cleaning cloth in order to not get burned. To see when the phone is overheated enough, I kept the phone facing a mirror.
  2. When the phone shows the thermometer logo, STOP heating the phone and let the phone come back to ambient temperature (DON'T put it in a fridge or stuff like that, just leave it and wait).
  3. turn on the phone, the wifi icon shouldn't be greyed out, and you should connect normally.

I've read (but I don't know since this is not my job) that this works because the wifi antenna overheated while upgrading and somehow the phone feels like the antenna is damaged, so it cuts the antenna out. BUT if you reset the hardware (with the overheating), the phone is forced to check the antenna again and it finds the antenna is ok.

This procedure solved two more problems for me:

  1. the heating of the phone in certain situations (sometimes in the morning I found the phone heated while it was recharging). After this procedure it never happened anymore.
  2. the battery lasts longer (it can depend from the fact that you are no longer using the 3g connection, but the battery now can last up to 16 hours)

Hope this helped someone.

I really feel let down by Apple this time, since today (3 years after the problem showed) again I asked for a new phone (since the problem showed up again) and still they asked ME to pay 229€ to have a new one.
