Photo sort order changed with ios 6

I just updated my iPad to the new IOS just released and I noticed that the sort order for the photos is now different. I had them set so that the first picture (shown on the album) was a depiction of the contents. Now it is no more.

Does anybody know the new sort order?

iPad 2, iOS 6

I discovered a funny thing:

Indeed I changed the "Date taken" of one picture I wanted to be the first in a folder (to be visible as Icon).

I changed the "date taken" to a date earlier than every other picture in the folder.

I synced my iphone with itunes...the order didn't change on my iphone..

I waited approx 5 minutes with itunes running ( just running, nothing else)

I synced again......and yes the picture was now on the first place.....

Possible explanation: itunes copied the picture during the first sync into the "Cache", but there's a background process analysing the "date taken" of the picture and putting it in the correct order afterwards....5 minutes later. After 5 minutes itunes "reordered" the pictures and the "new" order is synced during the 2nd synchronisation.

I hoped you understand what I mean .... 😉

Kind regards

Okay today I heard back from the Apple engineer working on my case regarding the sorting issue in Photos running iOS 6 devices, who by the way has been excellent to work with. He was advised by Apple engineers that they were able to confirm this bug and at this time there are no work arounds other than manually resorting the photos to get the sort order on the iOS devices to match the sort order in iPhoto. The engineers feel this is an issue with iOS 6 and will fixed in a future iOS 6 update. We are encouraged to contact AppleCare and detail our problems so Apple can build more data on this issue.

I did report to Apple that I did update my wife's iPhone and iPad to iOS 6 without encountering the sorting issue. The one difference between our situations was my wife's Mac was running iPhoto 9.3.2 and not iPhoto 9.4 when the iOS update was run. Minbe was running iPhoto 9.4

So now we wait for the update to fix this. I'm looking forward to someone finding a work around that lasts until the update arrives.

Norton 68, thanks for the update.

I must confess that I feel kind of like an outcast here. Many are speaking of their iPhones but I don't have an iPhone, my issue is with the iPad. Further, those that do have iPads seem to be using iPhoto or have macs.

I have a Windows 7 system and use iTunes to keep the photos in sync with a directory on my hard drive. The hard drive has the photos in the correct order, but they are scrambled on the iPad.

I hope whatever update they do will assist me as well.

Rev Mitch,

My issues are on both my iPhone and iPad 2. I am running on Macs. The fact you are running Windows and not using iPhoto and having the same problem gives creedence to the issue being in iOS 6 and not iPhoto which is what I was told by the Apple engineer. So looks like we are all bacvk to waiting for the iOS 6 update to fix this issue. This bug is not fun for me, I have multiple photo albums which are now sorted with the oldest at the beginning of the album and current photos at the bottom. Such fun scrolling through hundreds or thousands of photos to show someone a photo from last week.

Does everyone use iTunes to update their iPhone/iPad? Because I noticed this bug in the upgrade from iTunes 10.6.2 to iTunes 10.7. In iTunes 10.6.2, it sorts pictures by name. In iTunes 10.7 it sorts by date created. I actually downgraded iTunes when I noticed the bug, but when I upgraded to iOS 6, it forced me to upgrade my iTunes. If I had the ability to downgrade back to iTunes 10.6.2 and still be able to sync my iOS 6 iPhone, or if it sorted pics in itunes 10.7 by name, I wouldn't have a problem. But of course apple just cares about their iPhone 5 right now.

Actually this same bug existed prior to Mr. Jobs' death but it had been fixed it seemed in iOS 5.1 version. I agree with you about testing but it seems that "both" of Apple's beta testers missed this one or the fix didn't make it in the last version quick enough. I don't agree with public betas but I wish Apple had a few beta testers from the real world, our world it seems and not just developers.

Just to add another voice into the mix for the apple devs to hopefully take notice.

Photos were in name order on a 4G ipod touch running iOS5 and a Win 7PC with latest itunes.

After finally drinking all my cool aid and purchasing my first iphone (5) in restoring my previous profile to the new phone (on iOS6) the sort order of my photos appears to be by creation date.

This is similar to one or two of the above posters, suggesting the problem lies with iOS6.

Fingers crossed a fix is in the works.
