Can't join home network after upgrade to iOS 6

I upgraded my iPhone 4s as well as my iPad 3 to iOS 6 while I was at work today. Everything seemed to work fine while I was at work. I was able to log onto the wireless there without a problem. When I got home however, I was unable to join my home wifi. I get the very helpful message "Unable to join the network "<network name>". My network worked fine prior to the upgrade, and still works for my wife's iPhone 4 and our original iPad. The only thing that changed what the update to iOS 6.

Here is my setup:

Netgear WGT624 v3 wireles router with the latest firmware

WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]

iPhone 4s running iOS 6.0 (upgraded from 5.1.1 over the air)

iPad 3 running iOS 6.0 (upgraded from 5.1.1 over the air)

I have already tried forgetting the network, resetting all network setting, doing a soft reset, and a half dozen other fixes to try to get it to work with no luck

Anyone have any ideas or are having the same problem?

Thanks

DJ,

You may want to verify your password on your 4s one more time (I know its like someone telling you to go bang your head against the wall again to see if it hurts less) because on my 4s, I get the exact same error message as on my iPad (Unable to join the network "<network name>"). I am not saying this will fix your issue. You will probably start getting the same error once the password is correct.

Great White,

Actually, I tried disabling my router's authentication entirely, and I got the same response. In fact, I tried entering lots of bogus passwords and, again, I still got the same response. No matter what I enter, no matter what the authentication is (or even if there IS any authentication), the reply is always "Unable to join network".

When I try to join my neighbour's networks (they have different routers), I get the incorrect password response. But with my Netgear router, it is always the same.

S.P. I am right there with you. I was speaking specifically to DJ's issue of the error message saying he had the wrong password. I imagine once he gets that straightened out he is still going to have the same issue we do, but it helps to "un-muddy the water" a bit if he can be consistently getting the same thing we are.

Do you know your neighbors passwords or are you actually entering in the wrong passwords?

Just got off the phone with Apple's higher-tier techs.

Here's the deal: they were unaware of the issue, but they know now. I've copied the router log to the advisor, and let them know this is an issue regarding Netgear WGT624v3 routers. All of this is going to be given to the engineers, and it has been marked Rush.

The senior advisor I spoke to was very polite and knowledgeable, and she gave me her contact information. They would like us to keep them updated if things suddenly start working and, for their part, they are going to keep us apprised of what is going on and how long it will take. They might also contact me with requests for info. that could help them out. So, if you have any logs of your own, or anything that might be germane with regard to solving this issue, please post them here!

Bottom line, though: it won't be fixed tonight. The engineers have gone home for the day, and I understand they've been 'swamped' (no surprise). My guess is that, if we're lucky, we'll have an update next week. 😟

Sorry I couldn't be the bearer of better news. Best advice I can give is bookmark this thread, as I will update with any developments I get from the senior techs.

Thanks for getting somewhere with the support members.....I will keep looking at this thread and keep checking my ipad and iphone to see if the issue has resolved. I can only hope that this issue is fixed quickly, though I know that we are only a small percent of users that are without wifi access........Let's hope it is easier to fix that it sounds!

SP,

Thanks for leading out on this. I went into my router to look for some logs that may be helpful, but could only find website access logs (shows what websites you have visited). Where did you pull the logs that you sent to the Apple engineers? I am not sure if mine will say anything different from yours, but I would like to help if I can.

Also, did they provide you with a case number or trouble ticket number re: this issue? If I need to call I would like to have something to reference.

Once again, thanks for the effort.

GW,

The Case No. is 351240001.

You are correct in that the router log via the webapp does, indeed, only list access to blocked sites--however, the CD version of software that I got ages and ages ago (at least, I think it came with this router) included a troubleshooting program to monitor the router's network traffic when logged in as an admin.

Re. calling: the best way to avoid waiting on hold for a year and a day is to go to the Support section of this site, and then go through the various hoops of what device you have and what is wrong--and then, you can have them call you at a designated time. Much better than listening to muzack (though, they were playing some pretty funky tunes from the 70s when I was briefly on hold).

Good luck!
