Can't join home network after upgrade to iOS 6

I upgraded my iPhone 4s as well as my iPad 3 to iOS 6 while I was at work today. Everything seemed to work fine while I was at work. I was able to log onto the wireless there without a problem. When I got home however, I was unable to join my home wifi. I get the very helpful message "Unable to join the network "<network name>". My network worked fine prior to the upgrade, and still works for my wife's iPhone 4 and our original iPad. The only thing that changed what the update to iOS 6.

Here is my setup:

Netgear WGT624 v3 wireles router with the latest firmware

WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]

iPhone 4s running iOS 6.0 (upgraded from 5.1.1 over the air)

iPad 3 running iOS 6.0 (upgraded from 5.1.1 over the air)

I have already tried forgetting the network, resetting all network setting, doing a soft reset, and a half dozen other fixes to try to get it to work with no luck

Anyone have any ideas or are having the same problem?

Thanks

Here's the fix I did for the WGT624v3. It works, but requires downgrading the firmware on the router. I would do it until a patch is out:

Were you able to determine what the issue was and what changes between firmware revisions?

I have the WG102, so knowing that would help me know what firmware I would need to go to.

Thanks.

Nope. As I stated in the article, I'm not really sure why this works. I don't think it would hurt to go back a version, try it and see - and keep going. Obviously it's something with the Netgear update for their routers that doesn't connect with the iOS 6 software.

NaplesDave,

I can confirm that your suggestion works!

Reverting the Netgear WGT624v3 to the earlier 2.0.21 firmware RESOLVES the nonconnectivity of my iPad3 over Wi-Fi. I suggest everyone with that router employ this method until a fix is released by Apple, unless there is a compelling reason otherwise.

Will continue to post information as I receive it, and I will forward this information to the Apple advisor who is handling this case.

Thank you!

Fossilhead,

You are reporting a different issue than the one being discussed here. That method does not work for the problem we are discussing.

Our issue is related to interoperability between certain firmware on certain router models and the newest apple hardware running iOS 6. As such, it can only be fixed by a change in firmware, or a forthcoming update to iOS.

Many, many thanks to Cooper and Naples Dave for elevating this issue and finding the workaround! I'll give this a shot when I get home tonight.

I just got my iPad on Tuesday, and then it upgraded on Wednesday. I didn't even know it was the first day of iOS6, I just thought it was doing what most devicies so when they first come out of the box - check for the latest versions of their systems. Had I realized it was Day One of the new operating system, I would have held off on letting the iPad update. Brand new operating systems are high risk, low reward.

At this time, this seems to be a problem with iPhone4s/iPad3 and certain models of Netgear routers (WGT624 and WG102, for example).

It´s not only a problem of some Netgear routers. I can confirm this bug also with a Lancom 1821 router.

My iPhone 4 works just fine so at least it´s only affecting my iPad3.

I hope for a quick fix because without Wi-Fi the iPad is almost useless.

I can confirm this, we are using Lancom routers here at work and for me, this is the place where the issue occurs.

At home, I use a Netgear WGT624 and had not an issue in either updating nor connecting to my home WiFi at all. I don't know the firmware version of my router though, could well be that it is not running on the latest version.

So, I really hope that Apple will have the issue fixed quickly, too.

OK my issue with the iPad has been fixed by this method. I am still getting an "Incorrect Password" on my 4s. I have changed the password several times and every othere Apple product in my house can connect, just not my 4s on ios6. I am going to work and going to come home and play with it some more. Though the iPad is working great! Thanks for the help everyone!!

Afternoon all,

I too am experiencing the same issue as others have reported.

Upgraded to IPad 3 and Iphone 4S to IOS 6 yesterday evening at home and all worked well (via apple extreme base station) over wireless network.

At work however, we use Netgear WAG 102 wireless routers and I cannot connect with "Unable to join the network" message being displayed on every attempt to fix the issue.

Any help from Apple would be greatly appreciated! 😠
