You don't need to reboot Windows.

Leave your iPhone connected to your PC then:

  1. Quit iTunes
  2. In task manager click "show processes from all users", sort by description and kill everything "Apple". Also kill the process with the image name AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe
  3. Click Start > Run > in the Open text box copy & paste the following - with the quotes - "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe" and press OK.
  4. Open iTunes

What finally worked for me was logging on as administrator and uninstalling /reinstalling iTunes. Then I restarted and l logged in as normal. I then connected my phone to my computer and it worked. I don't remember the steps to log in as administrator-just google it. That's how I got instructions.

If you already have update 5 and can update wirelessly, I would try that. It wasn't an option for me because I hadn't updated before.

Good Luck!

mickdon, here are the instructions from cyclist, slightly adapted:

  1. Connect your device.
  2. Shut down iTunes if it is open.
  3. Open up task manager. On Windows XP, you hit CTRL + ALT + Delete. Sort by "Image Name" (by name of running process). Stop anything beginning with the word "Apple." You simply select the process in the list and then click the "End Process" button.
  4. Go to Program Files/Common Files/Apple/Mobile Device Support and double-click on the file "AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe"
  5. Open iTunes. It should now recognize your device.

Note that for step 4 above, you can instead put in the Windows Run box the following command (including quotes):

"%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe"

Then hit OK. That was cyclist's original instruction, but that step did not work for me so I went straight to the directory that contained the executable file and just clicked on it instead. Now I have a shortcut to that file on my desktop for easy access as I have come up with this iTunes problem on various occasions.

Hope this helps. I would not uninstall and reinstall iTunes as that is a pain to do. This is much easier. Try this first. Only try reinstalling iTunes if all else fails.

applefan ...

1. Open My Computer

2. Click on System (C:) drive

3. Click on Program Files folder

4. Click on Common Files folder

5. Click on Apple folder

6. Click on Mobile Device Support folder

7. Now double click on the AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe file

I am using Windows XP. If you are on another Windows platform, the location of the AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe file might be in a slightly different location. If you can't find it, do a search on your PC.

My original instructions were specific to 64 bit operating systems. If you have a 32 bit OS simply omit the (x86). I've updated the instructions:

You don't need to reboot Windows.

Leave your iPhone connected to your PC then:

  1. Quit iTunes
  2. In task manager click "show processes from all users", sort by description and kill everything "Apple". Also kill the process with the image name AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe

For 32 bit OS: Click Start > Run > in the Open text box copy & paste the following - with the quotes - "%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe" and press OK.
  4. Open iTunes

Cyclist -

I suspected this was the problem, but I had already restarted and it hadn't helped. My next step was booting the process manually and you led me right to it. Thanks 🙂

For some reason running the path directly did not work, but I visited the folder you mentioned and ran the process manually (AppleMobileDeviceService.exe, followed by AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe), and it worked. Thanks for speeding up my troubleshooting 🙂
