My main concern is that I will be deleting the 20,000 plus pics that I already have in my library.  Am I correct in assuming that the program itself and all the files related to photos are totally seperate?

The program and the database are completely separate.

Your photos are stored in the Aperture library, and the Aperture program in the Applications folder. Removing the program and reinstalling will not delete any photos.

I'm another person with the same issue.  My question is - my original install being Aperture 2, Aperture 3 was an "upgrade version".  Both are on CD.  I assume I have to start from scratch, with Version 2, then install Version 3, then download 3.4 and install that.

Another question:  I have several plug-ins from Nik Software (HDR Efex Pro 2, Silver Efex Pro 2, and Dfine 2), would I lose these apps upon the re-install?

    Thank you.

Ok So i used the Delete the app and reinstall from my disk option. I ran into the problem that I couldnot open aperture with the older version of the app.  I found two ways around this

1 move your aperture library ( Aperture Library.aplibrary ) to your desktop

2 hold option key while opening the older version to create a new library

either way once the current version of aperture is installed and opens properly just move you old Aperture Library.aplibrary back into your picture folder and overwrite the new library that you created

    hope this helps some folks

    good luck

I can't answer the first question; I suspect you may.

As for the second question: You shouldn't lose your plug-ins on re-install.  Aperture looks for the plug-ins in 2 specific locations and they should still be there.

Aaaahh!!! Success!!! I did the Version 2.0 install, followed by the Version 3 install (both from disk), then 3.4 from the App Store.  All my plugins were there and worked as before.

Have to say this was one of the most frustrating installs I have ever done. A waste of the better part of the day.

I don't think I will be the "first one on the block" at the next upgrade.  I think I'll wait a week or two!

Just delete all the preferences files referred to Aperture and problem's solved.

Not necessarily true.  Here's how to fix it:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4412

Yes! I deleted the pref files and it's ok now. Shorter path than downloading the app again.

Yes! I deleted the pref files and it's ok now.

But for how long? You will have to fix the prefs over and over again.

Deleting preferences in this case is only covering up the symptoms of a broken installation. Like taking pain killers instead of visiting the dentist when your teeth need a root canal treatment. I strongly urge you to reconsider and follow William Lloyds advice.

    Dear Léonie,

it's totally true what you say: i've deleted the app and reinstalled from my dvd. before opening Aperture, i've updated to 3.4 and it works like a charm...

with my method i've seen that facebook option didn't work well.

    kudos to you and william!

I also deleted the com.apple.Aperture.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences and 3.4 stopped crashing.

I re-installed 3.0 from the dvd and then did the 3.4 upgrade. Seems to be working fine now.

After upgrading to Aperture 3.4, I cannot open my Aperture library anymore.

I tried everything mentioned in this thread.

Aperture tries to repair my library and then crashes after about 70% done.

My library contains about 25.000 photos.

This is more than a catastrophe.

Any idea and suggestion is most welcome.
