iOS 6 causing wifi to NOT pass data

This iOS 6 wifi problem is affecting at least the iPhone 4, 4s, and iPad 3rd gen... The wifi appears to stay on, however, no data passes... If you turn your wifi off, wait a sec or two, turn it back on, the problem appears to be resolved until you have passed a set amount of data... Once that threshold is reached, the wifi stops passing again... It will stay that way until you turn the wifi off and back on or reboot the phone or just by letting it sit untouched long enough for the wifi to turn itself off... You'll know when you pick it up and hit a button... The 3G/4g indicator switches back to wifi... It all works again until the threshold is reached... This is very weird... If you use speed test.net app and run it two or three times, it will pass enough data to shut the wifi down... You can even watch any streaming video (3-5 mins) of something that pulls a lot of data other than browsing safari of mail downloads... It's very easy to recreate the issue, we just need a resolution very fast...

C'mon Apple....!!!

Having problem with internet connectivity on WIFI - anything that depends on DNS for data whether it is a web browser or an app while using WIFI. I call this problem "WIFI Lockout".

This happens on iphone 4, ipad 2 and ipad 3 that has been updated to iOS 6.

I am not talking about the issue of the missing apple page (day 1) or the inability to turn on/configure WIFI after updating to iOS 6.

This is what i have discovered so far.

You could be in the middle of surfing or using any app that makes data calls based on DNS (when you type google.com that is translated in the background so your device knows where to go - summary only) and suddenly you can go no where or do nothing!

Sometimes conectivity goes trouble free for long periods, other times it is repetitive "WIFI Lockout".

Yea sure, you can restart the WIFI connection, but WHO wants to CONTINUALLY do that?

Interestingly enought the device is still successfully connected to the internet via WIFI, but DNS request fail to pass successfully from the iOS 6 device.

Apple (or any curious iOS 6 user that wants to see my point), when this happens "WIFI Lockout" open up a browser before you reset the WIFI connection and type type 74.125.227.144 (google) and then “go” (I tried both safari and chrome). A google search page will come up and you will be able to execute a search (of course any link you click on will not work as it is dependant on DNS resolution).

The above IP connection to google proves NON DNS traffic works, so the issue is not the WIFI hconnection to the access point that is the problem. It is not an access point configuration/firmware or security protocol issue either because data does pass when the above steps are followed.

I KNOW THIS IS NOT ALL OF THE PROBLEMS WITH iOS 6, BUT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM NOT BEING ABLE TO SURF OR GET DATA THE iOS 6 DEVICE IS REQUESTING WHILE ON WIFI.

I have the same exact issue on iPhone 4. I dont have the luxury of changing the encryption type as I am using the hotel's WiFi. I use Skype and Viber to get back to my family. It is so frustrating that after every couple of minutes I get into this state of WiFi Lockout and lose connection on the call. Nothing works during that time - not even weather update.

I believe this could be multiple issues. One could be the DNS, as some of you tested using the IP address directly. The other could be a memory leak. It kind'a works for a while and then loses it -- tells me that something gets built up until it reaches a threshold when either some process crashes or loses connectivity internally with another process.

I am fearing there could be other problems that might still be hidden in iOS6. Sorry, I dont want it any more. Can anyone suggest how to get rid of iOS6 and go back to iOS 5.1.1? What is the reason Apple does not support the downgrade?

Ok ... my Wifi hung up again (after working for about 4 days). But now I can confirm, that it is a DNS problem!

The last time this happend I used the app "Ping Lite" to directly ping an ip address. But this didn't work either. So I thought it is not just a DNS bug. But this time I additionally tried to load a website by its ip address. And this worked althoug "Ping Lite" didn't! So I guess this stupid app even tries to resolv an ip address.

Anyway ... I can confirm the DNS theory!

For me, it hangs up in the middle of a Skype/Viber call. The DNS name resolution takes place upfront before the call establishment. Once the call is established, there is no need for further DNS name resolutions so the call should continue even if the DNS process falls over. I used to talk on Skype/Viber for extended time (10's of minutes) on iOS 5.1.1. I can now hardly talk for three minutes before the call drops and I experience WiFi lockout right there. I toggle WiFi, it works for a few more minutes and then again falls over.

I dont need to be fighting with this basic problem in the 6th generation of this Operating System. Apple, please take it back. We saw your CEO saying sorry to the whole world about Maps on iOS 6.0. This is not about Maps alone. This is about WiFi lockout as well and who knows how many other hidden problems. In other words, this is about the overall Quality of this 6th generation of this operating system. We dont need this. Please take this back and give us 5.1.1 back until you figure out what to do with 6.0.

Need URGENT help to download and reinstall 5.1.1.

Yeah, I think I was too fast with my conclusion. I tried a few more tests with opening websites directly by their ip addresses. It seems to work in the beginning, but at the end it doesn't. Hard to say if there ever went some bytes over the wifi after it got locked out. I also tried to set a DNS server manually (8.8.8.8 = Google DNS), but that also didn't work.

At the end I tried the other way round: I tried to ping my iPhone from my PC. Nothing. No response! I had to reboot my phone to get rid of this. Wifi on/off or flight mode on/off didn't help.

Maybe next time I will try to monitor the traffic on my router. Might help to distinguish between normal operation / slow wifi / dead wifi.

😠

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been covered by someone else, I didn’t have time to read all the replies. Since upgrading to IOS 6 I’ve been having similar problems as described when surfing (i.e. slow, unable to watch online media etc). After trying suggested solutions; turning wifi off/on, resetting my network settings and changing the time/date I decided to do a soft then hard reset, with nil effect on my situation.

I decided to change my router settings to see if that would help. After trying WPA / WPA2 only and having no impact, I was literally reaching for a cyanide pill (kidding – obviously). I decided that a router reset at this point was worth a try – no effect.

As I was clutching at straws, I opened up port forwarding and added my iPhone to the list to see if it had an effect. Luckily this (for me) fixed the problem and my iPhone 4 is now running as it was before IOS 6 when surfing. I don’t know if this will help anyone and I’m by no means “computer savvy”. I’m from the UK and have a BT infinity connection and use a BT HH3.

Anyway, this worked for me, good luck and hope they issue a fix for this soon 🙂
