I have the same problem. I have checked everything and phoned apple support. Out of pure frustration I restored to factory settings. The problem persist. With factory settings the only apps on my iPad were apple ones. If it is an app issue it is one of apple's own. The rotate functionality is still available as, after restoring from back up, when in landscape mode apps which only display in portrait still do. Please apple fix your problem and release an update.

I have exactly same problem and it only occurred after carrying out the update. The only way to rotate the screen in all apps and the home screen is to sleep - rotate- wake up. Very very infuriating as I use the iPad to carry out work that requires regular photographs to be taken and I'm having to 'sleep' the iPad every few seconds. Can anyone advise if Apple are actually doing anything about this?

I am having the same problem. It just started yesterday, for no particular reason that I can discern (I hadn't recently downloaded anything new). My iPad 3 was "locked" in portrait mode. I never upgraded to iOS6 so I was running 5.5.1 when this started happening. The first 2 times, rebooting corrected the problem. However, the 3rd time, even that didn't help. As with other posters I tried to find some help on the Internet and ran into the same diatribe of "try unlocking the side switch, then try unlocking with the task bar, then try rebooting, then try hard resetting." Of course none of those worked (and like most of the other posters feel, it's kind of insulting). As a last resort I did the latest iOS upgrade to 6.1 thinking that might correct the issue (I hadn't yet seen this thread where people where people thought it might be the upgrade). The only "improvement" was that my iPad was no longer completely "locked" in portrait mode. I now had the ability to switch to landscape mode by sleeping-turning the iPad-waking, but I'm still missing the autorotate functionality that I've enjoyed ever since getting the iPad last year. Has there been any progress on this issue since the last post?

I just took a brand new iPad 3 out of the box and it will not rotate. I'm having this exact issue. When I turned it on, it would start in portrait then rotate on it's own to landscape. I just assumed one of the "switches" was affecting it so I went ahead with the 6.1 upgrade. Now the iPad is stuck in landscape and I have no apps installed on it; it is right out of the box..

I checked the side switch, and the rotation lock in the task panel. Any resolution to this? This is my second iPad so I'm not a total novice and I'm stuck...

My The New iPad (aka gen 3 retina) had been doing this for a week or two as well, and rebooting didn't help after multiple times. The screen would not rotate unless I hit the power button to lock the screen or

Since someone suggested that it might be a currently installed app, I tried the following procedure and now I have active rotation again:

  1. Double-click the home button to bring up the "Recent Apps" quick launcher/switcher.
  2. Tap and hold one of the app icons until they all start wiggling and have the "-" to kill sub-icon.
  3. Kill ALL of the apps by tapping that red "-" sub-icon. I had several dozen so this took a couple minutes.

After doing this, rotation worked again in my launcher, lock screen and the few apps I've tried since doing that. I also shutdown/restarted and it is still rotating. I don't know which app was/is the problematic one (got a lot of apps on here), but if this recurs, I will attempt to figure out which one it was.
