Photo sync issues after 10.8.2, iOS 6, iPhoto 9.4 upgrades

After doing all the upgrades noted above, I was unable to sync my photos to either my iPhone or iPad. The sync would stop with an unknown error 1140 message. I tried all kinds of things, including deleting the iPod Photo Cache folder, restoring the iPad software and setting it up as a new device, and rebuilding the iPhoto library. If I unchecked the sync photos option in iTunes the sync would run to completion (but of course not sync any photos!). There were two other oddities in all this. First, when I would check the iTunes box to sync photos, the option to select specific events was greyed out. Also, even though there appeared to be no photos on the iPhone or iPad, the little disk usage bar in iTunes would show a couple GB of space allotted to photos. Clearly something was hosed.

The only way I could finally get things working was to pull a pre-iPhoto 9.4 photo library off of Time Capsule. I also deleted the iPhoto 9.4 application from the Applications folder and pulled the previous version of iPhoto off of Time Capsule. Now both the iPad and iPhone will sync properly in iTunes again, the disk usage seems right and the option to choose what photos to sync is no longer greyed out.

But now I don't really want to upgrade to iPhoto 9.4 again. Anyone have similar issues or thoughts about what the problem might be?

Have you tried deleting the XML file? iPhoto will generate a new one when you make changes to the iPhoto library. Quit iPhoto find the library (usually in the Pictures folder) select it and control click on the library. Select "show pkg contents). You will see the AlbumData.xml file. Drag it out of the library, do not move or touch any of the other files and folders. Close the folder and relaunch iPhoto. Quit iPhoto and go to iTunes and see if the multiple faces are still showing.

Download and install the iPhoto 9.4.1 update, which was just released today. It may be the answer to your problems:

Be sure that neither iTunes nor iPhoto is running when you install the iPhoto 9.4.1 update. After installing the update, then restart iTunes and iPhoto. By default, "All photos" is selected. Change this (it's no longer grayed out) to "Selected albums..." and you should be OK.

Start up iPhoto before starting up iTunes, to give it a chance to rewrite the library file. The sequence will be important.

I've confirmed that iPhoto 9.4.1 does fix the ampersand ("&") problem - it now properly handles "XML Entities" - so after iPhoto "updates the library", then iTunes should be OK.

If not, then it's time to rebuild your iPhoto library. Start up iPhoto while holding down the "command" and "option" keys.

After that, if you still have the problem with events and faces, it was coincidental and not actually related to the "&" problem. It could very well be two different problems at the same time.

Sync problem cured with iPhoto update. IPad was a bit balky in its update...one example was that the first time I synced, I checked Photos on the iPad and NONE were there. Rebooted the iPad, connected it again, checked the Photo sync settings (didn't change any), synced again, and the photos were there. Very strange. Also noted the "Other" category grew substantially from before....will have to research how to reduce this.

Mike, If you find no quick fix to the enlarged "other" category you can Restore your iPad FROM BACKUP and that should return the "other" category to a normal size. Make sure you backup your iPad first before the restore so when the process is complete your iPad will be as it was (all apps, music, folder layout, etc. will be as they were). Connect your iPad to your computer via USB cable and start up iTunes (if it doesn't do so automatically). Right click on your iPad's name on the left column of the iTune screen. If you are using a Mac laptop you can right click by doing a two finger click on the track pad. That will bring up a list of options...one of which will be "backup." Click on backup. After that is complete follow through on the Restore. Just make sure you Restore from BACKUP (the backup you just performed). I have had to do this several times on my various iDevices when they start to develope explosively large "other" categories.

Good luck. Mr. Luigi

Update 9.4.1 did not fix it for me. I still have the same sync problem. So it is still not possible for me to sync pictures to my IOS devices.

After updating to 9.4.1 my screen color changes to a cold gray when loading Iphoto. All other applications allso turn cold gray. When quiting Iphoto the color changes back to the normal warmer gray.

So come on Apple... It aint over..

Has anyone solved the events sort order issue yet with itunes/iphone synch? I've always had ascending order in iPhoto and the list in iTunes refuses to recognize it. I've done all the fixes and nothing works. It's really like iPhoto 9.4.1 and iTunes are not "talking" to each other. Hoping apple comes out with another patch, but there's always a chance a preference or cache could be the problem so looking for others in the same boat.

Thanks, Keith

I did use the workarounds suggested in this forum (get rid of "&") on MY MBP and it solved the problem . However, I was not willing to mess with my daughter's MBP for fear I would trash it and then she would trash me. (Senior in High School. Most dangerous species on the planet.)

So, I waited for the v9.4.1 update.

Just updated her laptop and synced her iPhone 4S.

No problems at all!

Sorry for those that don't appear to be finding relief with the v9.4.1 update. But, it did work for me.
