Photo sync issues after 10.8.2, iOS 6, iPhoto 9.4 upgrades

After doing all the upgrades noted above, I was unable to sync my photos to either my iPhone or iPad. The sync would stop with an unknown error 1140 message. I tried all kinds of things, including deleting the iPod Photo Cache folder, restoring the iPad software and setting it up as a new device, and rebuilding the iPhoto library. If I unchecked the sync photos option in iTunes the sync would run to completion (but of course not sync any photos!). There were two other oddities in all this. First, when I would check the iTunes box to sync photos, the option to select specific events was greyed out. Also, even though there appeared to be no photos on the iPhone or iPad, the little disk usage bar in iTunes would show a couple GB of space allotted to photos. Clearly something was hosed.

The only way I could finally get things working was to pull a pre-iPhoto 9.4 photo library off of Time Capsule. I also deleted the iPhoto 9.4 application from the Applications folder and pulled the previous version of iPhoto off of Time Capsule. Now both the iPad and iPhone will sync properly in iTunes again, the disk usage seems right and the option to choose what photos to sync is no longer greyed out.

But now I don't really want to upgrade to iPhoto 9.4 again. Anyone have similar issues or thoughts about what the problem might be?

I'm not willing to search a huge library for a music title with a "&" in it. I think that Apple should work for me and not the other way round! I'm waiting for real solution and not a workaround, where I have to delete slide shows or change titles of songs and arists...

I'm glad that I had a Time Machine backup! I'm using the old version again, that didn't cause this problem.

elbenoit,

Go to the offending album in iPhoto and start the slideshow. Now change the song to any other song that doesn't have a "&" in the title. Restart both iPhoto and iTunes just to be sure. That should solve the issue assuming there was only the one problem album. You may also want to go to that song in iTunes and change the "&" to "and".

@ blangen thank you I will try this!

the problem for me though is that I have like 200 albums and over time I've randomly watched them as slideshows... what a pain.

maybe I can try and find the offending song file and just change that. it is not in my itunes, it is hidden in iPhoto somewhere with their stock music files, (along with 'you've got a friend in me', etc)..

thank you again for your help!

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions. I fixed the problem.

The full instructions for the fix is in this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4314310?answerId=19689332022#19689332022&tstart=0#19689332?tstart=0

Basically you open up the iphoto library and open the album data xml using a text editor. use the search function to find all of the music containing "& " < that is, search for an ampersand with a space after it, no quotes.

Jot down the album names with the "& "and close out the xml. Dont save any changes!

Then go back to iPhoto, open the offending albums and play a slide show with a different song that does not contain the & in the name, artist etc. You have to actually play the slide show for the change to take effect. I just set a default tune and quickly played all the offending albums as slideshows for a few seconds each.

Luckily for me I only had about 10 of these albums. "Bob Marley & The Wailers" was the artist that caused all of this trouble for me. Bob Marley! Of all things!

Karma all around!

Today I was at my local AppleStore (Frankfurt) to have a look at the new iPhone and there I found a Genius to whom I explained Joseph's solution for the sync-BUG. He has already have such an "iPhoto case" in the morning and was glad to know the fix now. I asked him if he can pass our solution on to some developers and I hope he'll do so 😉 We'll see...😎

I seem to have the same problem as well. In itunes it would seem like I have a mixture of a old iPhoto libary and multiple events. Example: under Faces I have old people that i haven't had in faces on iphoto in quite some time. I also have like 20, April 23 2012 events. Also, All of my events in itunes are out of order, and I've tried everything to get it to fix it's self. There is a obvious problem with the update, Again, This is starting to seem very routine now days, and starting to **** me off
