Hi Guys,
I tried all these steps (i think) worked on my iPad (THANKS) didnt work in my iPhone...
Finally ended up fixing by resetting the "keyboard dictionary" under settings/general/reset
Not sure if this has been mentioned or tried before, but worked for me... thanks
Good to know it worked for you! But on which iOS version did it work? It would be useful for other people who are trying to get it to work.
Yep that would help... both devices running 6.1.2
Thanks
Thanks! I was shy of updating, but I might try it then.
I fixed mine.
Change language to british english. highlight a word and define. then download when prompted. Reboot and change back to english. Should still work. then delete the british english keyboard if you want.
i changed mine to spanish then went to the notepad to try to define a word. It was supposed to work since a "pop-up" showed up asking me to download the dictionary (it was in spanish of course). But then, thank you to the never- ending issues of 6.1.3, I cant download the dictionary because.. my wifi is greyed out!!! and theres no fix to it..
😠
that worked. I didn't even have to reboot. Thanks!
I have a similar problem... I started the download on my 4 and then hit "Done" (not sure why? haha) and now the "Define" tab never appears. Is there ANYTHING I can do to resolve this, or have I completely screwed myself over?? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
hello everyone,
I have the same problem as all of you but it happened in a different way.
I was out of home while I tried to define a word (I'm french, so in french) it asked me to download the small file (the dictionary) I pressed ok then it said it couldn't download it because I wasn't in WiFi (like you can't download it with 3G..).
Anyway it stopped downloading and when I came home I never had the chance to try downloading it again.
I tried every solution I could find but nothing worked so far...
Anyone got a clue? Going to the root and deleting the dictionary file? Every other langage are working (english/german/spanish...) Do you think I'll get it back if I wait for iOS 7?
Btw it works on my iPad and GF's iPhone :-(
Thanks for help
Just writing to confirm that a lot of the dictionary issues have now been fixed with ios7. There is a customisable dictionary settings page where you can manage (individually select, download and delete dictionary files). The Japanese to English dictionary even returned too.
The Japanese/English dictionary is back with ios7!
Having the Japanese-English dictionary back is worth the upgrade to iOS7 all by itself!

On your dictionary settings page, do you see an option for Chinese - English? There is supposed to be one, but some think it is only available in China at this point.
I don't see any dictionary app nor setting in my iOS7. Is it because I'm running on iPad 3 on non-US version? I also notice that I do not have other apps such as weather, stock, compass and calculator. Is this normal?
