Nice idea. For me in iS5 it seemed to be more related to the language setting of the phone itself but this may have also affected the keyboard list as well of course.
Unfortunately the keyboard order doesn't seem to affect the dictionary in iOS6. Thanks for your suggestion tho 🙂
I'm trying to get my iOS 6 iPhone 4S and iPad to translate from Japanese to English, like it used to in iOS 5. Now when I click on define I get a dictionary entry entirely in Japanese; the translate fuction, which was so useful, no longer is an option.
I'm having the same problem. My iPad was updated to iOS6, and now when I look up a word in the Japanese dictionary the entry is entirely in Japanese. My iTouch which has iOS 5.1.1 works fine. I think it is a problem with iOS6. I saw another post concering this, and the person said he called Apple about it and they said there was a problem with the Japanese dictionary. Looks like will have to wait until the next iOS update. What a pain! Which I could go back to iOS 5.1.1.
For those who are missing the "Define" function -
First, change your system language to something else.
Then, open Safari and try to define a word. This time you should be seeing the "Define" option. By selecting "Define", you might have to download a dictionary.
Then, the dictionary should be working. Now change the system language back to your original preference. After the respring, the "Define" option should stay, and the dictionary fully functional again.
This happened to my wife's iPhone 4 after upgrading to iOS 6. This method fixed the problem perfectly.
Let your iphone download the dictionary. This will solve the missing/empty 'define' issue. However my phone was still throwing definitions for words in email, messages, notes.🙂
I'm also facing a same problem. The "define" word was missing. Even changed the language, its still missing. Pls help me
the same here when I changed to another languages...
I'm having the same problems. With my 4s the define button doesn't appear. I've changed the language and it did appear and went to download the dictionary. It wouldn't download, saying I needed to connect to WiFi. I'm not the most tech savvy guy around but my phone IS connected to the Internet. I tried plugging the phone into my PC with the cord but again got asked to connect to WiFi. Why is it so difficult!!!!!!!? Surely Apple could create a fix for this problem. It seems as though its common.
Hey guys, i got the solution....
You go to
Settings > General> International> Language (the very first option)
change the language to a different one (i.e. I changed it to Greek) and let it reboot...
once it reboots, you can see the missing menu by highlighting a word. Download the dictionary using a WiFi (a reliable wifi).
Then go back and change again the language to your preference and thats it!!!!
Enjoy

i can use define in the ibook apps to access the inbuilt doctionary but outside the app it asks me to download the dictionary and after few seconds it says no definitions found.
can somebody please help me.
Typical Apple... ;/ I tried all kinds of combinations with change of languages, but I guess until it's fixed, Jp->En translation just won't work.
I want to have a way to choose which dictionary to use, like on the Mac. Dictionaries on both systems are basically the same anyway. Just as there are great features, there are some really frustrating annoyances about Apple products...
Your fix worked, thanks.
Can anyone check and see which dictionary is being used?
Did they update to the latest version of the NOAD or did they switch dictionaries?
Matters as the New Oxford American Dictionary is one of the best around.
Aft I change the language from English to British English, the 'define' showed up, wifi was perfectly connected, everything goes well and I got the dictionary. HOWEVER, what I got is totally not what I want. Somehow, at the time I was downloading the dictionary, I switched my keyboard input language to Chinese, and then the OS6 automatically download a Chinese dictionary for me, which can only define Chinese word with Chinese explanation. I am a Chinese, I don need someone else to tell me the meaning of the Chinese words. So now the problem becomes how to change the built in dictionary from Chinese to English? Any advice? Thanks!
Thank you.
It worked !!
