Iphone 4s Bluetooth problems after upgrading to IOS 6.0

I use the bluetooth to connect my Iphone 4s and my car stereo (Alpine CDE HD138BT) Prior to the IOS 6.0 Upgrade when I streamed music from both Pandora and my music files I was able to view the artist, song, album on the stereo and even use the stereo control buttons to skip tracks, search, etc. After the upgrade I can still pair the two and play music but I lost all of the other additional features and can no longer see the information or control it from the stereo. I have deleted the pairing on both and then re-established again but that didn't fix the problem. I found on the stereo specifications that it uses Bluetooth version 2.1. Is there any way to force the Iphone to revert to a previous version of bluetooth? (I am also going to post on an Alpine site to see if they plan on doing an upgrade.)

P.S. I just tried to install it with my Macbook Pro running Windows 7 in Parallels Desktop. Windows couldn't find the Alpine over bluetooth, but it showed up in OS X. I read the instructions and it says to just drag the update file into a folder on the Alpine called "Update." I figured since OS X could connect to it and show me the folders and all that really needed to be done was get the update file into that folder, I tried dragging it in with OS X.

MISTAKE. DON'T DO THAT.

It transferred the file over and started the update process. The instructions say it should take about 2 minutes. Almost 15 minutes later, it still said "FIRMWARE UPDATE DON'T TOUCH ANY BUTTONS."

Convinced I had already destroyed my receiver, I just turned the car off. When I turned it back on, the receiver still worked but still has the old firmware. I count myself lucky it is still functioning. I will wait until I can borrow a friend's Windows laptop or make a windows boot camp partition on my macbook before I try this again, and I highly recommend anyone else thinking about ignoring the Windows 7 requirement do the same.

Just tried to install it via a MacBook Pro running Windows 7 via Boot Camp.

When I try to pair the Alpine, right after I pick "pair-yes" on the stereo, I get an error in Windows: "Adding this device to this computer failed. Adding the device failed resulting in an unknown error. The reported error code is 0x80004005"

Haven't searched that error code yet.

Grr.

Alpine 135 BT, same ios 6 issue here. I only got a macbook as well, but it looks like I could just pair via bluetooth control panel and then move the file if I can create that folder? Anybody else tried this on Mac? I wonder if I could simply also move it to a flash drive and plug it in and let the Alpine find the file via USB port when I click update?

Well after multiple attempts using (3) different laptops and (4) calls to Alpine technical support I was finally able to upgrade. I am so happy to be back where I was a few months ago!

For anyone that is having difficulty, I think the key is connecting the laptop to stereo correctly.

Every time I tried to connect the computer could see the stereo but the connection failed on the stereo side. When I would try to update it kept on saying "Updating don't push a button." but would never finish even after 20 minutes. I tried both of Alpine's directions but neither worked.

I finally found another forum on this site where people were suggesting to connect from the stereo side not from the computer - this worked for me and I was able to upgrade.

The procedure which I did for this was to:

1. Delete the Alpine device from my computer.

2. I then re-booted the stereo (small red button under faceplate.) (1 & 2 could be reversed it isn't important.)

3. Check the BT settings on computer and make sure it is discoverable

4. Check the BT settings on the stereo and make sure those are correct.

5. Press "Search for device" on the stereo.

6. It then found my computer and was able to connect accordingly. I finally got the "Connected" message on the stereo.

7. After this point I followed the Alpine directions about setting the stereo in update mode and moving the file into the update folder - finally success!

Hope this helps someone else.

This got me closer than before but still no luck, at least not using a MacBook Pro via Boot Camp. It tried to connect, but then it started trying to "install device drivers" for the Alpine CD Receiver device, and it failed. Troubleshooting attempted to find the drivers (three instances) and failed on all three. Thus the receiver kept blinking "connecting" but never did.

SUCCESS!! Just installed the update with my macbook pro. Here are Mac installation instructions. I used a 15" Macbook Pro with retina display. No bootcamp, no parallels, just OS X 10.8.2. I don't know if this will work for all models/OS X versions, but here's what I did:

1. Like Smurphy5 says, follow all of Alpine's instructions to make sure all the stereo settings are right. Clear all the paired devices, turn on HFS, Audio, etc, make sure your laptop's bluetooth is on and discoverable.

2. Power your stereo down by turning your car off. Then power back on.

3. In the Alpine bluetooth menu, choose "Search Devices." It should see your laptop. It should be called "Your Name's Macbook Pro" or whatever computer you're using. Hit enter and select "Pair." A message should appear on your computer asking if you want to pair. Select yes.

4. Once paired, open system preferences on your laptop. Go to Sound settings. Select "Output" from the top menu. If your stereo is selected, select "Internal Speakers" instead. Select "Input" from the top menu. If your stereo is selected, select "Internal Microphone" instead.

5. In the bluetooth menu in your menu bar, select "Alpine CD Receiver." (If you don't see the bluetooth icon in your menu bar, go to System preferences, select Bluetooth and check "Show Bluetooth in Menu Bar.")

When you hover over "Alpine CD Receier," a pop-out menu should appear. There should be a menu item called "Use as Audio Device." Don't click it, just make sure that's there. If it says "Don't Use as Audio Device" instead, recheck your Sound settings in system preferences and make sure they match step 4.

6. Select "Browse Device" from the "Alpine CD Receiver" pop out menu. A window will appear showing you the two folders, "Recorder" and "Update." Double click the "Update" folder.

7. Drag the FC6000S_01-27-00.plf file into the update folder. It will show you the progress. Keep and eye on it and make sure it finishes.

8. If you've done everything right, the computer should give you an error message once it finishes that says something like "Connection failed or closed" and it will give you an option to try to reconnect or close the window. Close the window. This message means that the stereo has received the file and automatically closed the bluetooth connection to begin updating.

9. Let the stereo update and after 2 minutes or so, it should say "Firmware Updated Please Press Any Button." Press the back button on the stereo. It should return to the previous audio input. Power the stereo off and then back on to finalize the update. In the Audio Setup menu, select "Bluetooth" and go to "Firmware Version." Hit enter. If it displays 01.27.00, then the update was installed successfully and you are good to go!

Again, this worked for me using a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina display, running OS X 10.8.2, to update my CDE-HD137BT receiver. My iphone now connects automatically and even begins playing bluetooth audio automatically again as soon as I turn the car on. The play/pause, next/last controls work again, as does the track/album/artist information. I have no idea if this will work for other Macs, OS X versions, or stereos, this is just what worked for me, so please use these instructions with caution, and don't blame me if it doesn't work...but hopefully it will.

Good luck!

Thanks for this Technojazz--this was even closer still.

Went through all the steps, confirmed all settings and cleared out all paired devices.

I was able to pair the MBP to the Alpine, was able to find the Update folder, and dropped the plf file into it.

It consistently would get 453K into the transfer and then quit with the message: "You can't upload files or folders due to general error. Try again later."

I'm going to try to call Alpine one of these days and see what they say.
