Okay so from someone who just went through the airport using Passbook, let me explain how it works. First you have to have the apps supported, such as the AA app, downloads on your phone. When you get to the point were you check in and select to view your boarding pass you will notice the "i" information button at he bottom of the ticket. These settings control how the pass works. Before arriving to the airport or venue open passbook and leave it running in the background. When you arrive at your destination you will see a notification on you lock screen. Slide it and passbook will show your ticket. You can also go to the Passbook app and upon opening the app it will show your ticket. That's how it works. You do not have to add the ticket to Passbook the apps that are listed in the App Store under Passbook automatically sync to the app. I hope this helps anyone who is still confused. :)
Passbook makes more sense if you think of the "application" not as a traditional app but as a "holder." Thus, the "passes" that you want to hold in it (i.e. plane tickets, etc.) have to be created in another app (say, United Airlines), then sent to Passbook.
If you want to try it out, download the free app from Target. Within the app, you can view coupons and then "add coupons to Passbook." Then when you go to Passbook, the scannable coupon will be there. You can create your own rewards cards from Passsource.com, which is still in beta.
There'll be more support for Passbook rolled out in the days to come, I'm sure.
PassBook is like a "limited digital wallet" you'd pay for the movie on the phone, get the QR code basically, and scan it at the theater for your tickets, same would go for plane tickets, and gift cards you would prolly just load the card number and it'll show you how much is left and let you use your phone instead of the card, same goes with loyalty cards for groceries and such. (i say probably based on the fact that 3/4 of the users who did the upgrade, can't use it because it's screwed up and wont connect to iTunes, but if your a lucky one who it works for, that's what i believe would do it)
PassSource creates only codes that are not supported by store scanners, so that's almost usless for coupons and loyalty cards (i spent 2 hours loading them on there to find i can't use them)
So I downloaded the target app to try the coupon thing out. Signed up for text coupons, got the link and went to the coupon page. There is a "add to passbook" button. Whats not so great is that ONE barcode on the coupon is good for any of the several coupons they sent me. So now when I go to use the passbook coupon I would have to go back to the app and see what product(s) I want to use the coupon for. Thats kinda lame. Each product should have their own coupon...
If you tap the little information circle in the bottom left hand cornor of the Target coupon, The pop-up will have the instructions, if you croll down, it will have the list of coupons attached to the barcode
To me Passbook is kinda lame. I thought I could just simply take a snapshot of any coupon (with a barcode) and store it in my phone so I don't have carry it, same for my CVS card, GNC card, Gym card, AAA card, Petco card, Panera card, Ralph's card....( I hate all these little plastic tags that are hanging on my key ring)
As it is now, this app is nearly useless, there are only 6-7 apps with Passbook support, and even later on, how am I going to store all my royalty cards?
I use an app called "Key Ring" for all of those little annoying loyalty or rewards cards that fill up a key ring just by themselves.
Basically, if you purchase (or request) something from a passbook enabled app (Fandango or Target, for example) it will ask if you want to put that in your passbook. So you can add Target coupons, or your Walgreens reward card or movie tickets, after the individual app adds it to passbook.
Then, when you get to that theater, or your local Target, the ticket or reward or coupon will display on the lock screen and you can access the item right away with a swipe of the screen.
Try the following to fix the iTunes Can't Connect issue that you are having:

mine works, however...i have plane tix that are paid for from both jetblue & american that i would like to get on passbook...any ideas?
actually from what i see..its just an app that leads you to another app...kind of Androidish..i thought it would show the tix/boarding pass and allow for scanning at airport??
It does not lead you to another app. It holds artifacts from other Passbook enabled apps. It DOES hold your documents for scanning at the airport. When you log into your American Airlines app, you should be able to see the boarding pass that you have already checked in to, and then add that boarding pass to Passbook. When you arrive at the airport it will recognize that you are there and then be available to you on the lock screen.
At this time, I don't believe JetBlue has a Passbook enabled app.
What's the point then?
I thought it would be so smart and it would pull my boarding pass for me when it is available.. but it isn't! As it is, Passbook is pointless.
Really? What phone has a psychic adapter to know 1)what airport you are flying from 2)what airline you are flying with, 3)What flight you are on and 4)that you even have a plane ticket at all? How would any device know that?
You have to let it know that you have a boarding pass first.
But to answer your question, "What's the point then?", Passbook HOLDS artifacts from other Passbook enabled apps and displays it on the lock screen when you are in proximity to that event/venue/company/location.
So what you were expecting it to do really is what it does, with the comon sense exception that you have to pass that information you want TO Passbook first.
