At that level, I am not sure. I didn't buy a plane ticket just to test with. 😉

However, once you have you boarding pass available in the AA App, there should be a button to "Add to Passbook" or something along those lines.

But quick question...You have already checked into your flight, right? Otherwise you won't have a boarding pass available to you to add to Passbook.

ok, the tix has been purchased for awhile

on the American app it shows the info and asks if you want to checkin

my flight is in a month

i guess i could call Apple and get a specific answer...not willing to walk around with a checked in tix....if you can even do that this early.

i am wondering..if the app is so intuitive...maybe all that is necessary is that the vendor(american) is live with passbook and it sends the info to lock screen as you arrive??

essentially, doing no more as the phone owner than having the app connected to passbook. Is that a possibility?

Well, you can't check into a flight until 24 hours before, anyway. If you try to, the app should tell you that it's not available for checkin until 24 hours before.

SO, the day before your flight, use the app to check in, and your boarding pass will be assigned. You will then have the option to add it to Passbook. When it is in Passbook, you will be able to see it there. But when you physically arrive at the airport it will also be displayed on your lock screen (as the app is location aware) and that way you don't have to drill down to the app, then log in, then find the boarding pass. Just one swipe of the boarding pass that is displayed on the lock screen and it's there.

Please understand only YOU can send ANYTHING to Passbook. A company can't send stuff to your device (or even worse, request stuff from your device) at all. You have to use their app to physically give the app permission to add those artifacts to Passbook. The data that wraps the tickets/boarding pass, coupons, etc have the location information available. It's not transmitted back and forth with the vendor. In other words, American (in this case) has no idea you are near the airport. Only your phone does, and dispays the info that you requested to be displayed.

If Passbook was smart, it would do:

1. when first launched, ask me what royalty programs I would like to enroll, e.g. i can put in my AA number.(or anything else for that matter)

2. I could set it up so it would automatically check in when check in is avaialble, and it would pull my boarding pass for me when it became available. (maybe TSA would have some rules to make this impossible, but maybe it could be done without me having to bother)

3. based on my home (or wherever else) to the departure airport, estimate the time to go to the airport and put a reminder on my calendar

This is entirely doable, requires no psychic power whatsoever.

As it is, Passbook is DUMB, I have a stack of little platsic tags on my key ring (CVS, GNC, Gym, supermarket, Petco, AAA, etc... you get idea) I have no way to put them in Passbook unless there is an app from the company that supports it, Why do I need two apps for everything? If it merely holds something, what is the point? All the apps already holds boarding passes/coupones/etc and could be easily made to be a little smarter (location aware, display in lock screen etc). As it is, Passbook just adds another verneer but offeres no true conviniences.

Folks here are repeating that Passbook receives documents from other apps, but that's not entirely true. Passbook receives "passes" from other apps, e-mails, or web sites, according to Apple. We'll see this more (particularly the e-mail receipt adoption) as more vendors include passbook tickets and coupons in their messages. I'd personally hate to need a discrete app for every company that utilized Passbook.
