I had the same problem, and have tried all sorts of potential solutions based on lots and lots of conversations about this problem. I checked my wireless router settings, I checked my firewall settings, I un-installed and re-installed software, I configured and re-configured the sync process...all without success.

I FINALLY found a fix for my situation! (By the way, I have an iPhone 4, and I have Windows 7). The way I was able to fix this was by doing the following: (1) Disable Apple Mobile Device service via msconfig, (2) Restart the computer, (3) Enable Apple Mobile Device service via msconfig, (4) Restart the computer, (5) Power down iPhone, (6) Power up iPhone, and finally, (7) Open iTunes. Voila! 😁

This may not be the right solution for you, but at least it's another one for the books on this annoying problem! Good Luck.

@just add alcohol,

That did the trick. I noticed when I opened sharing that the tick box by internet sharing was grayed out and to the right of the checklist it said that I could not enable internet sharing because I had not selected a port. I ticked ethernet under that error, left internet sharing unticked, and my iPad immediately popped up on my iTunes. Thanks for the head's up. Its funny sometimes what weird little glitches will pop up and make things wonky.

Looking at all the posts and solutions, it would seem that there is more than one problem and more than one solution. I've had similar problems and was able to get it working temporarily, but eventually it would quit because my iphone couldn't find my computer. Every time I would try to force a sync it would say "looking for imac" and then time out.

Below is what I tried:

  • Rebooting everything, including the router (Time Capsule) - would sometimes work temporarily, but quits within 24 hrs
  • Ensured the "prevent devices from syncing automatically" box is not checked in itunes
  • tried disabling then enabling "sync over wifi" for the device in iTunes
  • Verfied firewall settings (including diabling the firewall)
  • Everything on the http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4062 page
  • Deleted ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.itunes
  • Deleted ~/Library/Preferences itunes preference files

Unfortunately, I can't say exactly what did the trick, but I think it may have been deleting the itunes cache and preference files. Either way it's working for me now. Hope this helps someone else.

What worked for me, and this is so silly IMO, is in iTunes (on my Mac) under Preferences/Devices I checked "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically" (it was unchecked) then clicked OK. Then I unchecked "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically" and again clicked OK. Then from iPhone, not connected via USB, only Wifi, under Settings/General/iTunes Wi-Fi Sync I hit "Sync Now" and amazingly the iPhone showed up in iTunes. It didn't sync this first time but after I clicked Cancel on the iPhone and then "Sync Now" again this time the Wifi sync worked and is now working.

It is silly that you have to toggle the dang "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically" option but it worked.
