I tried everything else suggested. Nothing worked. Tried my own idea, which was deleting all mail accounts and adding again. This worked for me. Thank God. I was getting very pee'd off with not being able to access my emails. Yay!!
IF YOU ARE USING A MICROSOFT EXCHANGE SERVER FOR MAIL!!!
I was having the same issues. The problem for those using Microsoft Exchange 2010 or 2013 is inheritance. You will have to modify the advanced features of Active Directory.

I'm having similar problem: The connection to the server failed. I don't use exchange -- on IMAP with two google accounts. Still was able to send and receive email, but every time I pulled down on the left-hand menu (in mail) to activate getting new email, I got the above message.
New iPad I've had for 2 months without any problems before this. Not a problem on my iPod Touch or MacBook. I haven't updated the iOS since I bought the iPad. Have a notification to update to iOS 6.0.3. I get same response when using either wifi or AT&T connection.
Server message went away after I did some of what was suggested earlier in this thread. Didn't have to delete and replace any accounts. Did turn off an old Yahoo address. Don't use CardDAV. I don't use Google Sync or the Gmail app.
Unfortunately, now I can't select Airplane Mode. I tap and no response. All other menu items respond per normal. Again turned off and on, then quit settings, still no response. Airplane is in off mode.
New problem? Only happened after dealing with the 'server failed' message.
I just experience the same problem. All of the sudden without making any changes I got the error message on my iPhone5 "Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server failed." This was strange because I was still getting email on my Outlook and on my "webmail" I was still able to get emails.
Basically it was a really simple fix. Instead of calling up a carrier rep and then getting connected with an Apple "expert", deleting the account, resetting network settings, turning off the phone, turning on the phone, etc.... try this:
Delete a bunch of emails from your webmail (the way you access mail from the internet when you are not on your office computer) around the time that your emails stopped coming through to your iPhone. This immediately fixed the push problem for me. There was a message that my phone simply didn't like.
This is has become a serious issue for us. We maintain support for a companies email server. Since iOS 6 their iPhones are constantly suffering from this issue.
My observations:
It seems to occur when the mail server is unavailble for any period of time.
It seems that the iPhone caches the fact that it cannot connect and then stop trying.
It often takes several attempts of recreating accounts before the account connects again.
I have used iPhone Configeration Utility to send profiles, but these suffer from the same issue.
Using Airplance mode seems to resolve the issue in some cases, but not all.
I hope Apple have solved this in iOS7, the company are thinking about dropping iPhones for Android which I do not want to have to support.
You have to go in and delete the account, then re add. This applies to all accounts on the iPhone/iPad. All of your original settings such as calanders and contacts will remain the same after you re add the account(s).
My email was fine, over the weekend my mail box did not update and now i keep getting error message connection to the server failed. I rebooted iphone did not work, i refreshed my passed this did not work, i deleted my email account and set it back up and now i can cannot get my emails at all. Does anyone have any other tips or advise
Kamlash, I experience this also on the 1st week I got my iP5s and iP5.. what i did was I deleted all my email accounts (namely: yahoo, gmail, hotmail and including icloud account) and reseted the network...
When the phone turn back on and network has been restored, I manually add my emails Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail only excluding my icloud account.. since then the annoying
" MAIL CONNECTION TO THE SERVER FAILED"
message is gone and never pop up again. every time I check my emails over wi-fi or 3G connection..
Thank you so much for your suggestion I tried this several times and it did not work, intact I lost all my current emails. I left my this for a week and then re tried and at long last it worked my email account worked. Thank goodness.
My issue is that the problem happens too often, for some users in bad signal areas or when traveling by plane, several times a day.
I am sad to report that one firm that I support have had enough, they have dropped iOS devices after in desperation they tried an HTC Android device that does not suffer from this issue.
I now have to support Android :-(
This is such a stupid error on Apples behalf. It is very simple to fix.
I am having no luck with this. In fact it seems that it has synced the issue across all my i devices, phone, pad, macbook, and desktop. All of my devices cannot access my Yahoo account outside of using the Yahoo mail app or the website. They were all working fine a week ago. I have tried to edit the account and have also deleted the account and adding it 'automatically' following the Yahoo choice. I have also tried it manually. What the heck is going on?
Anybody have a definitve fix yet?
Thanks
Grande and other Yahoo users,
Yahoo has decided not to play nice with other mail clients. Yahoo wants to drive more traffic and present more targeted ads to users. To do so requires collecting more data on users which is so much easier to do when using the Yahoo app or directly through their web portal. Basically, they want to be Google and they think people will tolerate finicky problems (just like trying to use Gmail on outlook or iOS) except Yahoo is never graceful with changes. In short, if you want Yahoo to play nice with iOS, slow down or stop using Yahoo until they get the message.
Best of luck.

Did you change the password to your email lately?
If so it needs to be changed on the iPhone too.
Go to Settings.......Mail,Contacts,Calenders.......select the email account (Yahoo, Gmail, etc).......then select 'Account'.......then you can update your new password.
I've been struggling with this problem and tried everything everybody was suggesting, nothing worked. Then I tried changing the setting from "Push" to "fetch" and bam! it worked, must have sopmething to do with too many e-mails on the server.
Had the same problem...it will not work with an Exchange server..I tried everything...Finally I added it as other account...set it up as IMAP with incoming and outgoing the same as your webmail....mail.xxxxxxx.com
