Logic Pro keep playing and WILL NOT STOP!

Hi there folks,

I just bought a brand new computer. I went from using Logic Pro on a 2009 MacBook Pro with 8 gb of memory to a 2.44 ghz 12-core Mac Pro with 24 gb of memory. I just started working on a song that was stalling quite often with Logic on the old computer and 1) find it still stalls! and 2) often during playback it suddenly becomes unresponsive to the stop button (either moused on the screen or hit with the space bar) and just keeps playing. What should I do? Is this a known problem?

At first I thought it might be the Abbey Road plugins, which do not work well in 10.7 or 10.8 (I'm running 10.8.1 btw). But after removing all instances from this song and deleting the files from the computer Logic is still misbehaving badly.

The only other plugins I have loaded up on this computer are Valhalla room, Valhalla Shimmer (which I'm not using in this song), Kontakt (which I'm not using with this song), Trillian and Waves CLA-2a/3a/76.

If anyone can help I'd be eternally grateful. This is so wildly frustrating! I figured after shelling out this much money and taking 2 solid weeks to very carefully set up the computer it would be smooth sailing. 😟

I've had runaway playback issues since my first upgrade from Lion in 2010 (I have a 2009 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. The machine worked great till the OS upgrades, and eventually Yosemite 10.10.3 is brutal . I feel I shouldn't have to get a new iMac just because all the software updates cant keep up, yet I guess its becoming a welcome to the club issue, thanks for any future updates, or suggestions you may have

Upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks a bit over a year ago. Instantly got the ~15sec lag of responsiveness bug and noticed it's especially related to the active analyzer on the EQ window, so thought it's something to do with display card drivers (had just upgraded from Radeon 4870 to GTX680 4GB (flashed) which didn't work perfect in Snow Leopard (had a flickering cursor and no graphics within Waves plugins because they use OpenGL or such that was missing due to lack of drivers)). In overall the problem seems to do with the refreshing of display and drawing content in it. I would've stayed in Snow Leopard if there was no problem with the plugin graphics and if Final Cut X had still been supported there (it's actually not supported under Mavericks either so I'm contemplating of upgrading to Yosemite to get the latest updates... and FCPX is pretty laggy too, I hope they'd take the graphic routines and the whole user experience from Logic (like, cutting several clips at once to the same length)).

The bug is sometimes awful, sometimes non-existent. Another bug that does the same occassional but very frustrating trouble is jamming of the last core even though there are almost all resources available with other cores. The audio just becomes laggy until the system resources are reshared more evenly. I'm surprised these bugs haven't been fixed in the past years.

Three quick things...

1) For those having the 'runaway' issue and have more that 4 real + 4 Virtual cores.. set Logic to only use 8 Cores.. not Automatic or more than 8 cores...

2) EQ with analyze mode on can easily create a delay because it has to read ahead in order to analyze whats about to be played... Other mastering type plugins will do the same, for the same reasons..

3)

What about el capitan? Has anyone installed new OS and tested Logic Pro on it?

LP9 is currently a 'No Go' for me at least... with El Cap... even with the 10.11 32bit compatibility update recently released.. but that might change...

The current 10.1.1 LPX version and El Cap PB1 compatibility is too early to say with any confidence and besides I expect an update to LPX shortly (to add the new 'Alchemy' plugin and fix the issue with sharing to the new versions of iTunes & Apple Music amongst other things..) so I won't probably properly test LPX under El Cap until that is released..

Also, several people have reported major issues with 3rd party hardware driver foul ups... which is totally expected and not unusual... Updates to drivers usually fix such things but they typically arem't released until after the final version of the next OS X is 'out in the wild'.

Finally....

As always. don't update OS X until you know for sure both your software and hardware is fully compatible... and even then, if you do so, make sure you have a full working backup to roll back to, before doing so, just in case...

"Logic Pro 9 and Yosemite are not fully compatible under certain circumstances on certain Macs..."

Oh yes, I made this mistake too. Upgradet my MBP (2011, 2,2 i7 Quad Core) to SSD & 16 GB + Yosemite + LPX. First LP9 was running (with bugs), but LPX was an only Bug. Then I made a clean Install of 10.10 & new Install of LP9 - now I can´t open LP9 & LPX does´nt work correctly.

Now I´m waiting for a new iMac & pray, 10.10.4 & LPX will work stable together.

The "old" Computer goes back to Snown Leopard or Mountain Lion. It´s sad, ´cause I like Yosemite (the easy-going synchronicity with my small MB), but I mainly need a safe machine for make music. F***, I read your posts two mounth too late - but all the poeple from the support I asked, told me before the upgrades "there are no problems..."

Sorry for my rudimentary (& maybe wrong) english & thanks for your articles! I think, it has finally convinced me to reinstall an older system.

Some helpful information

I have an iMac (about 5 years old - will get the exact model tonight when I return home) / I also have a 1 year old MacBook pro

They have the same operating systems - but the problem only occurs on the imac.

I use a dedicated external hard drive which contain my projects and logic files [with each mac referencing the same data], to allow me to work on the same project on both machines.

Only see the issue after about 45 minutes on the iMac.

Process of elimination seems to suggest the difference in hardware must have an impact?

Logic Pro keep playing and WILL NOT STOP!
