iOS 5.1.1
"Other" includes everything that is not audio, photos, apps, or books. It includes videos, messages, app data, and iOS itself.
It may be normal for your iPhone. iOS 6 is bigger and will account for at least some of the difference from what it was before.
Settings > General > Usage > Storage shows you how much data each app uses.
If it still doesn't seem right you can force a recalculation of "other" by the following
It actually got worse on my iPad its now .92 gb
After downloading ios 6 both my 3GS iphone, "other" has become 8.5 gb.shown by its memory summary. I forced a reclalculation by going to settings in iTunes and unchecking/rechecking "Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected" and sync'g it again. Still shows 8.5gb being used. Deleted all videos, movies, etc. Still no change. Is this normal and how can i lower it?
The only thing you can to do is do a hard restart by holding the home button and lock button until the apple logo shows up or do a full restore
I have the same problem. I set up my iphone 5 as a new phone. Then restored from a back up, and had 3.8GB of 'other' after, when on my 4s it was tiny. Ive tried everything including a restore several times, a set up from new completly (install apps one by one etc) but it has now got worse since the last restore and is at 4.6Gb now, yet nothing has changed.
I can't tick the box you guys suggest as it is greyed out and wont let me. Im at the end of my tether as to how to get this down. My ipad has near enough identical apps etc and the 'other' is sod all compared to my phone.
Sorry but I restored and it went down to 700 mb but then the next time I plugged it in it went to over a gigabyte and I've never had this problem with it being so high I assume it is just a side affect of iOS6. Maybe a hard reset may help but other than that I don't know what else to do
i am using 3gs iOS 6. My other space was 2.5 gb and so i backed up and restored than other space is now 570 Mb. Wow.
I did that and it only made mine worse. I have since set up my phone as new for the second time, and it is at .97GB. The moment I add a non standard wall paper it goes to 1.35GB. If I remove it it goes to .97 again. However, if I make no changes and sync again and again, it changes every time between 1.2 and 1.35GB. I have no music or photos in camera roll (2000 odd in a synced folder only) and only 4GB of apps, still at 1.35GB.
God knows what was causing 4.6GB before as it wasn't music, messages, videos or photos etc as I removed the lot. I think it's a joke that we can't access 'other' and decide what we want on there or clean it up some how.
I just upgrade my iPad 2 with 64 GB to iOS6 and now I have 36.8 GB of OTHER content.
Am currently resyncing w/only the apps checked. No photos, music, books or anything else.
CRAP!!!
Around 1gb of other is normal, most of the time when you get into alot larger number than that, it represents corupted files, of which a restore in itunes is suppose to alleviate that problem. But, if it does not then you will have to restore your device as new in order to get other down to a normal amount.
So this top of the range phone, that can('nt) do everything, is supposed to be restored every few months to get rid of data we have no idea what it is? Thats just stupid. Why is there no answer to this? No apple support? Mine has gone up again to 2.92GB over the last two months and i have deleted everything. I have no idea what causes it, and no one else does. Why has apple no made a access or cleaning tool of some sort for this problem? Or is that too easy?
I shrank my "other" space by 2 gigs by turning off iTunes Match and only syncing mail with my Gmail and Yahoo accounts (not syncing notes, calendars, address book and such).
Add me to the list... iTunes 11 and iOS 6.0.1 on an iPhone 3gs. The iPhone reports 4.3GB free, but iTunes reports 4.53 GB Other and only 370.5MB free. Tried unchecking the "Automaticaly sync..." box in iTunes, but, at best, iTunes only gets it momentarily right, then reverts back to the incorrectly large Other category.
So far the problem has stayed away after doing a restore.
I had the same problem. I've got an iPod touch 8GB and when I updated it with iOS 6.1.1 it had 4.8GB 'Other' and I was terrified as none of my music would fit in.
Luckily, I've found this discussion, backed up and restored my iPod and now everything is fine - 'Other' takes up only 660MB of memory 🙂
Thanks, guys! 🙂
