Mine was hanging last night when I tried updating... the fix was this- do a cloud or computer backup... then update from within iTunes while connected. That worked for me. I ended up resetting it completely, but was able to restore once iOS6 was installed.

Just make sure it's connected to your computer and your iTunes is the latest version.

I attempted to update my iPhone 4 from ioS 5 to ioS 6 from iTunes on my laptop using Windows 7 OS, I had downloaded the new ioS 6 and started the update on the iPhone 4 and everything was going routine until the phone had been going thought what I though was the update process when an error window opened up and said that an error had occured and the iPhone 4 could not be updated. I have never had a problem like this before and it caught me off guard and I did not note all the information in the error window, but it did not appear to indicate anything other than that I would have to abort the update and did not think it would be that big of a problem. However I could not get iTunes to recognize the iPhone 4 after this and still cannot after rebooting the laptop a few times and also trying to reset the phone a few times as well. The iPhone 4 just has the image of a USB cable with an arrow pointing to an icon for iTunes. I have tried to get iTunes to recognize the iPhone, but cannot accomplish it to do anything else with the phone. It seems like the phone is in a state of where it does not have enough software loaded to do anything or I don’t know how to get it to. Any suggestions how I can get my iPhone 4 back into service. Note: iTunes still recognizes my iPad and iPods, so iTunes seems to be okay to me.

I got the same message. It says iOS 6 has been downloaded but after it verifies the update I get a message that says "Unable to Install Update. An error occurred installing iOS 6." I have plenty of free GBs. I have tried over the past 3 days and get the same message each time. Installed it on my IPad without a problem 3 days ago but the iPhone4 has been a problem. What's up?

Yes, I read all of the threads and was not having luck by waiting a few days nor by having an adequate amount of GB. I finally updated to iOS 6 on my iPhone 4 by going through iTunes and downloading the latest version. Took a while but seems to have worked. The only issue I have is that there is an icon for Passbook that has a number of features I would use but pressing the icon takes me to iTunes which then displays a message that iTunes is not available. If anyone is having trouble, I would try the update through your iTunes account. Worked for me.
