Hey guys, well I had all these problems since the 6.0 update.

I actually ended up solving it by shooting compressed air in the dock connector because it was saying that it was connected.

I did it for about a minute and it ended up bringing back that slider bar and my speakers worked! instant fix...

So happy, it was annoying as heck

I also am having sound issues with alarms, calls coming in and other very important functions that have made me miss work meetings and important calls. I brought my phone into an Apple store and as usual they say they are unaware of a problem nearly every person I've asked w a 4 (and some 4S owners) have experienced themselves. I've tried cleaning out the headphone jack and many other workarounds. The sound problems are intermittent but won't go away. Apple, are you listening to all of us? Please fix this soon. It's bad enough I've had to buy an alarm clock and keep my phone in site everywhere so I don't miss he visual lighting up should it decide not to sound properly.

Those of you who think it is a hardware issue and are posting all of these solutions using compressed air, hair dryers, q-tips, et.al. are really misguided.

I have had a 4s for over a year. So has my wife. We bought them at the same time. I did not install the 6.0 update until sometime in November (months late) because I did not have room for the update. My problems started when I finally got around to doing the update. That is when I went looking for the solution and found this thread. I wish I had seen it sooner.

I dock and undock my phone with my car stereo many times a day. The issue remains, and does not change from day to day. Meanwhile, my wife's 4s (still running iOS 5.x) is just fine! I advised her against updating her phone until this is sorted out.

It may well have something to do with the compatibility with other apps out there. I have few apps on my phone. I don't have time for games, etc. so perhaps that is why my problems are not as pronounced as others are having. In any case, this issue is somehow related to iOS 6.

Those who read this thread, be careful before you go shooting air or jamming foreign objects up the dock connector. I am sure the powers that be at Apple are well aware of this compliant weather they are admitting it or not (A tech I talked to via telephone told me he knows there are problems) and I am confident a future update will correct the problem.

Here we go again! I am now on my 4th exchange iPhone 4s from the Apple Genius Bar.

First my sound vanished soon after the upgrade, like a lot of other people's. Nothing in sound would work, not even keyboard clicks, I tried everything but to no avail & the whole phone was dead sound wise. My wife suggested a hard reset & omg there was all the sound back to normal with no problems, great I thought until a few days later waking up for work late as my phones alarm never woke me. Yep all sound gone again, I was furious & my work was not happy. I booked an appointment with the Apple Store & they told me after a quick check that the only problem they could find is a knackered battery that wasn't charging to well. So they exchanged the phone & away I went. It took nearly a week to get all my apps back working again & getting the phone just how I wanted it, again I was happy. But the next day on waking early for work by a vibrating noise & no alarm sound the new phone was f***ed also, I was fuming & lucky I heard the vibrating which woke me. I booked another appointment with Apple & took the new phone again. This time they explained that as I had backed everything to the new phone from a previous back-up, that is where I must have gone wrong. They said they will replace the phone once again, but to this time treat the phone as a new one & not to back-up from anything, this way the problem can't be transferred to the new phone. So off I went with another new phone. It took nearly 2 weeks this time to get the phone sorted & how I wanted it, with all my apps working. I had to lose some information on my phone though as things I had programmed into certain apps was now lost, which was annoying, but at least the sound on the new phone was all good again. Then just a few day later, I went to grab my phone in the morning to notice, you guessed it no F***ING sound again. I almost threw the phone against the wall. I called Apple on the phone & explain the whole situation, they explained to me that if I was telling them the truth, then I had done everything right & they was confused by what maybe happening. They could only come up with that I was incredibly unlucky to have the same issue with now 3 phones & to bring it into the store & they will exchange it for another new phone. I was fuming after telling the guy the amount of time I had wasted on getting my apps back working, setting new passwords for different apps, calling banks to get certain apps working again ect & asked if it could be anything else causing the sound to keep crashing like the recent update to IOS6 or maybe a certain app I have. He said he knows no problems which the new update has caused & said that my apps would never make the sound vanish just like that & kept saying I was just really unlucky & to change the phone over again. I booked the appointment & into Apple I went again! I explained the situation & the guy said you can't be that unlucky 3 times, he told me instead of changing the phone over, he was going to take it out the back to remove the speakers & put a new set in thinking it was just a hardware problem with those, I thought this was crazy but agreed & went away with the sound now working again as the phone had been hard reset again, which always fixes the problem. Just 2 days later, NO F***KING SOUND!!! I was off work that day so, I booked an appointment & stormed straight down there, again costing more fuel money & paying to park. Again, I explained the situation the the young girl & she apologised, she talked to her manager & then explained to me, that they are very sorry & will give me yet another new phone. She said she would also give me a new charging cable as this maybe causing the problems. She explained to, AGAIN, treat it as a new phone & don't download anything from a previous back-up, she said it is probably one of my apps causing the problem & to read through all the app reviews to see if anyone has had the same problems with that app. She did say I could just load one app at a time & if after a few days it was ok to add another trying to eliminate the bad one. I thought she had gone mad myself, but I let her finish. She said that may take a little while, but at least you could find the problem. I wasn't going to argue as they wouldn't have listened anyway, so I took the phone & after yet another nearly 2 weeks trying to get all my apps working, phoning the bank again & the phone set up the way I wanted, a few days later NO SOUND! I have now given up taking it back to Apple as they haven't got a clue or they are just trying to humour me into thinking I'm at blame for there software F***-ups. It only seems to happen though when I plug the phone in at night to charge, so whether it is going into docking mode or not who knows, but I'm now just living with it. Today is the 7th time the sound has gone on this phone in the last 2 months nearly. I guess I will just keep hard resetting & using a different alarm clock for work until Apple get the bloody problem sorted.

A lot of people are thinking this problem is related somehow to docking their phone. That is not true.

It is entirely RANDOM.

My 3GS will be unplugged from a charger, will be working just fine, then in a while the sound will quit working. Then after a while it will randomly start working again (not being plugged in at all during this time), then stop, then start and so on.

If I turn it off, then back on, the sound comes back.

Sometimes the sound clicks while typing will be on then go off while I'm typing.

It worked perfectly fine BEFORE I upgraded to 6.0!

I'm advising my son and daughter-in-law, who also have iPhones to NOT upgrade their ios until this problem is resolved.

P.S. I really want/need a new phone and would like the new iPhone 5, but until this problem is fixed, I'm holding tight with my so very slow 3GS.

I totally agree that it is random - after trying absolutely everything I could to fix my phone including a backup and full restore which lost all my photos and videos and contacts and then cost me £18 to get it all back :( on Xmas day my sound reappeared initially for 10 mins and then it came back after 10 mins off and has stayed since!

Apple wanted to charge me £150 to fix the problem - do they even know what the problem is when it appears to come back when it wants !! I'm do glad I didn't pay the £150 I'm just gutted that I lost all my images and had to pay to get em back if I had waited a few days longer I wouldn't have had the hassle.

I've just encountered the very same problem but on my wife's ipad 4. Tried many suggestions from the threads, did not tamper with any hardware or the Q-tip suggestion, but still the problem of no sound. I then thought I'd turn the ipad off by simultaneously holding in the 'Home' and the 'Sleep' buttons. When off I left it 10 seconds then restarted via holding the 'Sleep' button until it came on again and the sound problem was solved. Don't know whether anyone on this thread has suggested this method but adding it all the same... GOOD LUCK! Best Wishes... Mike

guys, i had this problem... for me it wasnt anything i could clean out or blow out of the dock port... my fix was to replace the dock port on the phone. I got the parts and tools from macsales.com. be verrrrrrry careful and you can do it... its not hard. the hardest part is not ripping the ribbon cable from the home button to the connector attached to the dock port board. i did that, and had to snag one from my friend's old phone with a broken screen that i am so glad i had for the spare part. for 25 bucks plus shipping, i am all set now.

for the record, 4s, sound worked when ringing from call, or alarm, the rest was disabled because the phone thought it was in dock mode.

Dec 29, 2012 3:23 PM in response to JannieRatke

its possible there may be another issue which affects sound output... i think some people are confusing the "thinks it is in dock mode" issue with another issue where all sounds dont work. its possible there may be a speaker hardware issue in there too...

with the dock mode issue, the problem is a hardware issue, either fixed by blowing, brushing, or scraping the dock port, or replacing the dock port. this is why some people with the issue have had their phones replaced.
