I've been looking online for solution, but nothing helps!! All volume bottoms are on high, the mono sound is off and I have several times rebooted the phone.. All without luck. I have had positive experiences with Apple techs on the phone, and I have to believe they watch these pages and are well aware of the problem. I did do a restore to my phone (4s), guided by a tech and while it did solve the problem for a while, it came back.

I will tollerate it for now, and hope there is a fix in the next iOS upgrade SOON!

This is extremely frustrating. I actually just realized I had this issue very temporarily about a week or two ago and had not even noticed it at the time. Now I've sat here for over 3 hours trying EVERYTHING. (iPhone 4 32gb)

My problem:

  • Side Volume buttons do nothing
  • I don't get sound when unlocking phone and typing, etc.
  • If I play music, etc. i get sound but no volume control.
  • Vibrate switch doesn't work.

Attempted Solutions:

  • Cleaning out dock port
  • Cleaning headphone input
  • hard reset
  • soft reset
  • reset settings
  • alcohol cleaning dock port
  • plugging charger on and off
  • and all imaginable settings trouble shooting there is

What I do recommend for those of you that will just deal with this issue until it is fixed by Apple...there is a temporary solution for at least having some volume control, including mute, etc. Do not forget you have the feature of Assistive Touch. This feature allows you to control your "buttons" without actually using the buttons, but rather a small circle that appears on the screen for that purpose.

To access this feature:

Settings/General/Accessibility/Assistive Touch

Turn Assistive Touch ON.

In a second or two a little white circle will appear on the top left of your phone's screen.

Tap on this circle, then tap on "Device". This gives you control (on screen) to:

  • Lock Screen
  • Rotate Screen
  • Mute or Unmute
  • Volume Up
  • Volume Down
  • and some other features.

This DID give me that audio I was missing again (of course it didn't fix the buttons not working), but allowed control of those features.

You can move this little dot anywhere on the screen that's comfortable for you and use that until a fix comes out. Hopefully something gets fixed sooner than later. I'm pretty annoyed with this situation myself. Hope this helps as many as possible. 🙂

Periodically I lose all sound on my iPhone 4S running iOS 6.0.1. When this happens, all sounds stop working, including notifications and ringtones. Trying to play music simply results in the play icon appearing and then disappearing from the top notification bar. When this problem occurs, the only fix is to reboot the phone.

It started with iOS 6 and I'm pretty sure it's triggered by an app, but the bug is in iOS.

I have macbook, ipod and iphone. After that silly sound problem after upgrade to IO.6...I found that all ads and propaganda were fake. Now I have solution; no more Apple..really disappointed and I think Samsung with Androids is the only solution I can suggest.

I also wish to log this issue with apple. The sound, e.g. in the music player, cuts out sometimes and then the track pauses. I have been moving the settings sound sliders left and right which seems to reset the issue, but come on! I bought an iPhone 4 used, happily; were I to buy one of these straight out of the box, I'd be very dissatisfied.

Please change this in the next update.

I also am having intermittent sound issues - although they are more so not working than working now :(. I tried the hair drier suggestion and this made it work the first time for a few hours but hasn't worked since. I took it into an O2 shop who couldn't see anything wrong with the charging port or headphone port and she checked for water damage and there is none. She told my only option was to take it to apple and they would charge £150 to fix it !

I then backed my phone up and did a full restore which took forever - still no sound - I then restored from back up and I had lost everything - videos photos contacts - I was gutted :( it kept saying the back up was corrupt. After a few hours tying to get my photos and videos back I had to purchase some software which found the backup data from iTunes - I had to pay £18. The backup which I did 21.12.12 showed that it had nothing in but underneath I had a back up dated 21.12.1981 and this had everything in. Best £18 I've ever spent yet it should never of happened : (. Only problem is now I can't get the photos and videos to sync across - it will only do one or two and then it says sync is complete :( so frustrating and there is still no sound !

I have got this phone for another 10 months and find it extremely annoying that I cannot use it for what it is intended - apple are a joke as their support once out of warranty is shocking ! £25 per problem over the phone.

I have loved apple since I had my first 3GS but I honestly won't ever have another iPhone.

FIXXXXXXXED

OK>. I figured out how to fix the NO SPEAKER SOUND / NO VOLUME CONTROL problem after updating your iphone to IOS6/6.0.1

first of all: its a software fault. 100% error by apple who should be required to pay for any damages caused/any inconveniences. IT IS SO FRUSTRATING! i mean it borders criminal damage! my phone was working fine until i updated today and it compeleted lost all sound funcionality from a music/movie point of view.

ANYWAY TO THE SOLUTION.

i read somewhere that certain apps still work anyhow (more evidence is a sofware fault NOT SOMETING STUCK IN YOUR HEADPHONE JACK OR IPOD/IPHONE CONNECTOR)

one of these apps is gangnam dancebooth. find it in appstore and download for free. you can create a character and have him dance to gangnam style! THIS IS NOT AN ADVERT. i admit its a **** app. but you will find your speakers working!!!

magic right?

ok, so now i played around with the app and then connected it to a speaker-dock. when connecting and playing sound from the app double-tap the home button and swipe left twice to go to the sound controller which normally wouldnt display a sound controller after the update. now it has a controller and you can adjust volume of the app sound. there should now also be a little icon next to the volume slider. tap it and see the options. after playing the song 1st time it only said iphone and speaker dock as 2 sound output options. when dis and reconnecting the iphone several times it starting showing other options.

it only showed iphone or iphone speaker after a while and when i selected iphone instead i could unplug the iphone from speaker dock - exit gangnam dancebooth and listen to normal audio again!!

wow. what a mission. and ****** weird. but it works.

night chaps. merry christmas.
