I just had this issue and the only way I could get it to work was by doing the following.

1) In iTunes click on "iPhone" tab in top right of screen.

2) Then click "music" along the top after "summary, info and apps".

3) Click "selected playlists, artists, albums and genres". Above this the value of songs displyed zero. I then reclicked "entire music library" which then changed the zero to number of songs in my library.

4) Click on "summary" and you should see audio (blue bar) has re appeared.

Hope this helps. sorry if it doesnt.

Guys, I bought an iPhone 4 some days ago and I had the exact problem. I've spent 2 hours and a half with Apple Online Support in order to try to solve it and the specialists couldn't solve. I had the iOS 6 for the phone and a MacBook Air with OSX last version (10.8.3) and iTunes 11.0.2 and nothing could be done. Fortunately, as I bought my phone in an official Apple Store, I went there and changed for a new device (another brand new iPhone 4). Now it is working perfectly, so I suppose that it is a hardware problem and nothing can be done except changing the device. The specialists from Apple didn't assume that it was a hardware problem, but it seems obvious to me. Good luck.

in iTunes 11.0.4.4 had the same problem. Also had many iterations of trying to "cleanly" sync up my iPhone 5 to a playlist on my computer. I have over 1,000 songs on the computer and didn't want them all on the phone, so I initially tried to manually copy the songs or albums I wanted to the phone. This worked for awhile but I wanted a cleaner way to manage the music on the phone. I created a separate playlist on the computer just for my phone and copied all the songs to the playlist with the intention of copying the playlist to the phone. Problem was it didn't really work as advertised. Then I tried to add a single song and it just wouldn't go to the phone so I decided that if I deleted every song from the phone then surely I would be able to copy my playlist over without a problem. Not! Now I have a phone with NO music and after trying all the suggestions I could find online it wouldn't sync.

- upgraded iTunes. No.

- selected entire music library. Song count went up to the total on the computer but it still wouldn't sync.

- selected the playlist again for the phone. Still wouldn't sync.

- other stuff I can't remember doing... You know how it goes when trying to diagnose a problem.

Anyway, I scroll down the Music tab for my phone (in iTunes) where you see the boxes for Playlists, Artists, Albums, etc. At the bottom there was a box for "Manually added songs", which contained an entry for every song on my computer, which at one time I had either sync'd or copied to the phone. I selected the entire list and clicked the handy "Remove" button at the bottom of the list. That list and the box disappeared. So now my phone is empty and iTunes doesn't have any record of ever copying those songs to the phone.

I go back to the top of the Music tab and select "Selected playlists..." and then select my phone's playlist below in the Playlist box. Clicked "Sync" and the 600+ songs that I want started syncing!

Good luck!

Had this same problem with my iPhone 5 and was getting so frustrated as to why it was acting so crazy. Finally fixed it and this is what I did:

Comepletey shut down my PC and let it chill for a minute or two.

While my PC was down, I turned off my phone's WIFI and left it off while I started my computer.

When my PC booted up, I only opened iTunes, grabbed my USB cord for my iPhone.

Plugged it up, still leaving the WIFI on the phone off, and it automatically synced without any errors.

Hope this will work for others as well!

My iPhone 5s would not sync music. It would hang & either just sit there or finally cancel. I finally fixed it after trying all these steps from forums & blogs

1. Unchecked all music & synced - did not work

2. Reset & restored - did not sync

3. Put phone in recovery. I did this twice, 1st time I resorted from back up, 2nd time I set up as a new phone - did not sync either time.

4. Uninstalled & re-installed iTunes - did not sync.

5. Deleted all apps on phone & from iTunes - SYNC WORKED!

I ran a diagnostic that showed one if the kernels was not in the right place BUT I also saw that one of my apps was constantly crashing, which pointed to a bad app b/c the diagnostic showed my battery in perfect condition. The bad kernel pointed to bad software, which is why I put my phone in recovery. When that didn't work I tried uninstalling iTunes. But when that didn't work still I figured it had to be the app that was crashing. Sure enough, deleting all if them from my ph & iTunes worked. The sync was hanging on the app b/c it was corrupted.

After doing this you can go into the App Store on your phone, go to purchases & re-download your apps onto the phone, then they will sync again b/c the path is fixed.

Thank you to "itsmytv" for saving me from continued misery in trying to solve the problem everyone else has been having. I had tried multiple things for at least 3 hours today and nothing worked until I found your post. Although I shudder to think of the crazy things I did to my MacAir before I found your comment, I at least now have my playlist moved from my laptop to my cellphone which will then hook up to my backyard speakers in time for our guests. Your suggestion worked instantly and perfectly. Thanks again to "itsmytv" !!
