I'm having a host of issues with my computer, one of which is the roman letter keyboard will randomly switch to inputting gibberish (Greek characters, copyright symbols), even after I reboot which sometimes prevents me from being able to log in!

Press the world symbol left of the space bar.
If you get åß∂ƒ© when you type asdfg, it means your machine thinks the option/alt key is stuck down, and most likely your keyboard is damaged and must be repaired or replaced.

You are confused. It's an iMac, not an iPad. The world symbol is only on the latter. Even there you would never get the copyright symbol.
