Is it possible to remove downloaded but uninstalled ios 6 from iphone 4?

I recently bought an 8GB iphone 4 and yesterday i got a software alert for ios 6. I didn't intend to download it but I must have pressed something to make it happen. I haven't installed it yet; I would like to remove the download and stick with ios 5. Is that possible?

I am in the same situation. Even though I refused the update download in iTunes and checked the "never notify me again" box, the iPhone automatically downloaded the operating system software over Wi-Fi. I don't want to upgrade/update. It doesn't matter why, so don't tell me about the cool new features.

I will repeat the question asked at the beginning of this post– how do I get rid of the download and set it so no operating system software is ever downloaded without my express permission?

I called Apple Customer Support yesterday and their answer was there is no way of removing the already downloaded update. This means we'll just need to live with that red alert notice on the Settings icon.

I really do not want to lose google maps' cool "Street View" feature (I've looked at a few other apps, but none are comparable). Therefore, I will only update to iOS6 when google's app becomes available.

On Dec 12, 2012 google maps was released for iphone OS 6, therefore, I went ahead and upgraded my OS and then installed google maps. Things are working great. I also reclaimed an additional 2 gb storage space that was previously used by the "downloaded" OS that I had refused to install. Now that storage space has been freed up.

I would recommend the upgrade now.
