Turning OFF 3G for iPhone 5?

no it's not, what the **** half of you talking about??? this is the point why i5 using so much more battery then i4... point is turning off 3g is not same as turning off LTE... before, when we didnt have 4g networks (LTE) we could increase battery life by switching off 3g to 2g, but now they gave us posibilitie only to switch off 4g to 3g... what is by my point of view incredible bad...

and please, dont tell me points like "you can switch cellular data" because THAN YOU DONT HAVE ITERNET!!!

Whether or not you can disable 3G data is up to your carrier. ost carriers who have disabled it have done so because they are shutting down their EDGE networks. AT&T is a prime example. Their EDGE network will be entirely gone by the middle of 2014. If you turn off 3G in an area where there is no EDGE (assuming there is no LTE or you have LTE off), you will get no service at all. Including voice service.

It's not dependent on the phone. It's not a function of iOS 6. It's up to your carrier.

im from lebanon using touch network. i have iphone 5 c .i cant make calls but every time someone calls me nothing happened.i cant receive calls. what to do?

I would start your own thread since this is unrelated to turning off 3G.

I feel your pain Jonny, my problem is that my data provider considers 4g as part of my high speed data limit, even though it is just 3G tech, and turning off LTE will not prevent my phone from using 4g 'high speed data' to check my mail or weather or any number of ridiculous background tasks that don't need to be done at high speed. But I have not seen any settings that would allow us to use only regular 3G or EDGE. If you want to save battery life or high speed data that should be a setting...

Apple should provide a turn on and off option of networks (2g, 3g, 4g etc.) if they really care about their customers and if they dont want to loose customers to other companies or force their customers to jailbrake.

Point of that option= battery life

There is nothing to do about it. Apple needs to change it In next version of their OS.

This goes for all iphone users. There is no solution to this problem.

sad but true... can't tun-off 3g even after 8.0.2 update... this seem a feature drop... with 3G iPhone 5's battery drains by minutes.. I'll have to now worry about the extra power backup all the time 😟

just goto SETTINGS - MOBILE - and toggle off MOBILE DATA. Job done ;0)

If you turn off 'mobile data' you can not access the internet AT ALL!!!

AND you are still connected to the 3G network for regular telephony! Is that SO hard to understand???

The starter of this thread wants to turn off 3G to use slower data 2G network to save battery power when he doesn't need high speed for video etc.

He does NOT want to completely turn off data!

As it is now, iOS 8.1.1 can not turn off 3G to use GPRS or EDGE, and we are forced to stay on 3G or higher if we want to still be online for MMS etc.

If that's the case, then under the "mobile data" toggle use the "Voice & Data" setting and select 2G. Ios8.1.1

Unfortunately there are no such settings on my iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.1 and TDC carrier.

Possibly this is something TDC doesn't want customers to meddle with...

Exactly. Many carriers are in the process of completely shutting down their 2G networks in order to re-use the bandwidth. Allowing customers to turn off both LTE and 3G would result in no service at all on the phone.
