iOS 6 update - iMessage not working

This is so frustrating. I have tried all of the recommendations and still cannot get any messages with other iphone users to work:( My phone will not send as sms either.

Please help!

This was the problem with mine - most of my settings, etc. transfered over so I wouldn't have expected that it forgot I prefer to use iMessage. It was (re)set to off by default in iOS 6.

I updated on Saturday afternoon on my iPod 4th generation and since then, iMessage had completely stopped working, and it is impairitive that I have it! I need this fixed ASAP!! I'd this something that Apple will fix or is it something that I need to do manually?

Same here in Germany. Updated an iPhone 4S and an IPad 3. Both use the same apple id.

IMessage stopped working on ipad but runs just like always on the also updated iphone 4s.

Strange... Tried practically everything to no avail.

I just got off the phone with Apple about this problem, my Facetime, iMessage, and screen brightness doesn't work properly anymore. My 4S was bought brand new in April, and never had a problem since date of purchase until I updated to iOS6. Everytime I try to sign in to iMessage and Facetime with my apple ID and error screen pops up and the phone defaults back to having all services turned off. Apple rep told me it would cost $99.00 plus tax for them to fix the software issue. Hopefully someone can find a way to solve the issue, I refuse to spend money to fix a problem that I didn't create.

Did you go to

Settings-->Messages-->iMessage and turn it on? I reset my phone and it still wasn't working until I did that. Hope it helps!

I also have a iPhone And i pad Whit the same Apple id. When i send a iMessage from i phone the answer comes In my iPad. But i only have the iPhone curinga my Work. I need to receive the answer In the same place i send. What is happening now with This iOS 6????

As You see problemas In Brasil too.

Of course the problem occurs WITH iMessage turned ON.

It would hardly be a problem worth posting otherwise don't you think? ;-)

For me it started working for no apparent reason now.

Others have suggested that its an apple server thing and not a matter of setting your device right. I begin to suspect the same.

Time is the healer?

You should select your phone number in Settings>>Messages>>Send and Reseive>>your mobile number(####)

Do not use an Apple ID to send iMessages....

And now it's not working again... This is really frustrating and the kind of windows behaviour that makes one want to buy apple stuff.

Why should it not work with an email adress as identifier? It has before the update and is clearly supported and encouraged.

For a short time my ipad sucked in all the imessages i wrote and got yesterday on my iphone, just as it should instantaniously when i receive them. Seemed to work then. That was with wifi connection at home.

Now i'm on my way to work and, as i always do, my ipad is connected to my phone via bluetooth, since i have an widi only ipad 3.

now, all the messages only appear on my phone. I have not changed any settings for at least a day.

This is clearly something apple has to address. Soon i hope.

To further clarify:

Both phone and pad are running ios6. Both are set to receive immessages sent to phone number and two more mail addresses, identically. No matter what identifier the message is sent to, the all come through on the phone, just like always. None of them come through to the ipad. Except for a short time this morning.

I'm now having trouble with iMessage. I updated to IOS6 on 9/19, but the trouble didn't start til yesterday. iMessages weren't going out. I turned iMessage off, turned hte phone on and off, reactivated iMessage, and now my messages are only going out as SMS.

It's is the answer! This worked, thank you. The key is to make sure only your cell account number is checked. Great detective work.
