Just got my iphone 5 today. Unfortunately I had the same problem. I already called the store so that I could have it replaced tomorrow... Then i saw this thread! I did what the others said, smack it with the palm of your hand. I had nothing to lose anyway since it will get replaced tomorrow and i do not think smacking it would cause any scratches or dents so as to void the warranty. It worked! Seriously it did. I thought it was all a joke. My only problem now is that I bought a "defective" unit. Since I "fixed" it, how would I be able to prove that it was defective?

I would love to hear from the ones who have done the same and was able to fix the problem. Was it a permanent fix?

I suggest if you are not as impatient as I am, return your phone to the store. But come to think of it, I might get another unit which have more serious problems (ex. Battery) that cannot be seen immediately.

In my opinion, vibration motor is more or less mechanical (and electrical of course).

It gets stuck and sometimes dislocated so whacking it may not be that bad of an idea.

I tried smacking, i played with the vibration settings, i even created my own vibration pattern all in vain.

Usually, when you flick your phone from Normal mode to Silent mode, the phone does vibrate. However, mine does not.

I'm going to the store to either get my phone fixed or get it replaced.

Its been less than 2 weeks old, and i already have this issue. Now, i was wondering if they replace this phone, and what if i get another defective handset, more like with the network chip or the battery.

I'm thoroughly disappointed.

I had the same problem. Here's what I did to fix the problem:

1) Go to "Settings" and then "Sounds"

2) Select "Ringtone" under the "Sounds and Vibration Patterns" area

3) Select "Vibration" and then you can choose one of the vibration patterns available.

My phone seemed to be set to "none" and that's why my phone wasn't vibrating when I had the ringer off and the vibrate when silent on.

This problem occurs when your restore a backup from a iphone 4 or 4s to a 5. I dont know what it is in the back up but if you call your iphone 5 before you do a restore you will notice vibrate on silent works fine. after the restore it will not work anymore. so heres the solution...reset your settings in the general section. ONLY THE SETTINGS. nothing else. this will have no effect on anything, but the only things you will have to do is go and set your wallpaper and ringtone back to what you had it at.

You are probably right in this in some cases. My Iphone 5 configuration was actually a restore from an Iphone 4s (using icloud). I have already tried what you mention but with my iphone 5 that had no effect. Only the "whack" method mentioned earlier in this thread works for me (at least for a limited amount of time - then the problem is back some hours later - A day later if I am lucky). So the vibrator simply gets stuck and needs to get loose again. I should get my Iphone 5 back from repair within the next couple of days. I assume I get it back with a replaced vibrator. Crossing my fingers I will not experience this problem again.

I have a 5c which is about 6 weeks old. I use the vibrate mode almost exclusively, and last weekend, no vibrating. U was about to take it back and my very brave 13 year old son, who has an iPhone 4 and has taken it apart and put it back together again several times, assured me he could fix it. Out came the two VERY tiny screws on the end and a suction cup to pull the screen half away from the back half. The vibrator started working instantly while it was apart. Put it back together gently and return the screws and magic! He said that the **** things are so cramped that the vibrator gets squished sometimes so that it can't vibrate. Whatever the case, it works perfectly now.

BTW, I think the posts on this thread can be dividied into two groups - the software group, where the vibrator was turned off for some reason such as upgrading software etc. and the hardware group. I was in the hardware group, unfortunately.

My iPhone 5 will not vibrate.
