Clean Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) install instead of upgrade?

Hello.

From App Store, I downloaded the free Mac OS X 10.8.2 upgrade due to the new MacBook Pro from a few days ago. Is it possible to do a clean install from scratch and not upgrade over 10.7.x or a new drive? I would like to keep the new HDD clean as possible with no old stuff. I have not migrated the old data from the old MacBook Pro yet.

Thank you in advance. 🙂

Confirmed, this new MBP does have those three iLife appications. App Store does see updates, but two refused to get updates because of Mac OS X 10.7.3 (needed to be upgraded first). Whew! Do I assume I can just download these three iLife applications after doing a clean 10.8.2 installation and logging into App Store?

I also have the free 4+ GB Mountain Lion/10.8.2 downloaded. I also made a copy, of its .app, onto a DVD. I will use http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/ to make a bootable DL DVD as well and do it easily (GUI!).

I have NEW questions:

1. Does erasing the HDD and installing 10.8.2 void warranty/AppleCare?

2. Do I have to erase the whole HDD before installing 10.8.2 cleanly, or just the Mac OS X 10.7.x partition for 10.8.2 clean install? If installing cleanly to that partition, how does one put 10.8.2 onto its recovery partition to replace the current 10.7.3?

I will ponder/dream on/about this tonight while I sleep (too tired to stay awake now) and hopefully we will get more replies later. 🙂

1. No. In fact, if you have AppleCare, you can even call them up to help with the erase and/or partitioning. (Maybe not the install, though, since it's outside typical methods.)

2. Just the main hard drive is enough. The recovery hd will be updated during the install. If the fact the recovery hd will be upgraded bugs you, though, you can repartition back to a single drive first.

And yes, it's safe to assume the 3 iLife apps will be available in the App Store after a clean install. You just have to be logged in with the apple id that accepted them in the first place.
