iPhone 5 Touchscreen Problems

Just unboxed the iPhone 5 and for the most part it's great. But one big problem has been occurring with the touchscreen, which I've heard is new (integrated with the display itself versus a separate capacitive layer as in past iPhones). I'm curious if anyone else has been having this issue or has any suggestions on what to do...

The touchscreen acts up by "sensing" my finger even when it's not actually touching the screen, but is just very close. This happens gradually at first, then it seems to get a little worse, requiring me to use more exaggerated gestures to actually get the phone to do what I want it to do. Eventually the phone will just respond to my hand waving above it even several millimeters above the screen, and seems to go haywire. It starts missing the letter/button that I'm trying to type. Sometimes the whole screen freezes to where I can't swipe to unlock, slide between home screen pages, etc. Although the physical buttons like the home button and standby button do seem to still respond despite the touchscreen being messed up or frozen, it doesn't get rid of the problem when I go back to what I was doing.

Eventually, I end up resetting the phone by holding down both the standby and home buttons simultaneously for a few seconds. When the device powers on again, it seems to have done the trick and the touchscreen is back to normal. However, the problem reoccurs with a fairly high/annoying level of frequency. (I mean I've only had the device for a few hours total and it's already happened at least half a dozen times.)

Has anyone else experienced this? Does this sound like I have a lemon or could this be a general issue? I wonder if it can be fixed with a software patch or if I need a replacement screen/device. Pretty frustrating to deal with right out of the box, and I don't really want to go anywhere near an Apple Store today with all the craziness that's probably taking place...

Hi there, thx for sharing, but the problem you had is not the same as mine.

I only have problems while connected to the mobile LTE (G4) network.

The issue you have with your charger is a different issue which I also had with my last iPhone 5 before I exchanged it at the Apple-Store. The new one is fine and they also swapped the charger allong with the Phone.

You will encounter further problems if you use third-party chargers or Docking-Stations if you do not exchange it.

Even charging it in the car will cause the Touchscreen to malfunction.

My last phone was only working while being charged by my old iPhone 4 Charger.

If you only want to use that charger, there is no need to have the phone exchanged.

It depends if you are using any third-party products or Docks.

Your decision.

Cheers!

I have this exact same problem. Not with my iphone 5 (which works perfectly -- touch wood!--), but with my ipad 2.

The ipad worked fine for a year, then suddenly started jumping around, seemingly hypersensitive, randomly opening and closing apps and ghost-typing gibberish (exactly like the link to a youtube video on page 1 of this thread). At other times, the screen will be unresponsive to touch, though the home button and screen orientation still works. The first problem I can usually fix with a reset (and making sure that just one finger and nothing else touches the screen....ipad 2 does not like multi gestures!), but the second...

I've done the soft reset, hard reset thing. No permanent solution. I've deleted various apps that I at one time or another suspected of causing the problem. No effect. I've upgraded the iOS to the latest version (I got the ipad almost 2 years ago with iOS 4, and after the problems started finally got around to upgrading to iOS 6). Things were better for a while, but now, three/four months later, the non-responsive touchscreen problem has started up again. 😠

After I've updated the iOS, my apps were not sorted in folders any longer, and I left it that way. This past Sunday afternoon I sorted the games into folders again, and Monday morning the screen was non-responsive. After numerous resets, I finally got the thing working well enough to get rid of all the folders again. Worked for a day or so, and then the problem returned....

I've tried using a screen protector and going without. No effect on the problem.

Of course, with the problems only having started more than a year after I got the ipad, I can't return it to istore for a replacement (I don't think I can in any case, not in South Africa at least).

I'm going to try getting another charger for the ipad (I've always used the original one that came with the ipad). I hadn't thought it would be a problem, but after reading this thread, I remembered that over the weekend I charged the iphone 5 and the ipad 2 at the same time, next to each other in the wall socket... so now I wonder whether some interference caused the problem to start up again...?)

I have wondered whether or not humidity and ambient temperature can have an influence on how well the touchscreen works, but if it can, why did I not experience any problem with the ipad during the first year?

If a new charger doesn't do the trick, I'm probably going to have to delete all apps (essentially restore to factory settings), and add them back one-by-one to see what happens (or alternatively upgrade the ipad!)...

Since the problem is not confined to the ipad 2 or iphone 5, I'm thinking software problem and most likely some corrupt app. I wish we could compare apps and see what apps we all have in common!

Swipe was recognized intermittently. No left-right swipe, but sometimes notifications and the dashboard thing would work. Did not recognize taps.

The only way to cycle the phone5 off was to hold the top button and home button simultaneously for a few seconds. The swiping works correctly after this restart.

History of exposing the iPhone to MRI magnets, then restoring settings via iCloud after iOS 7.0 went commercial night before last.

I have the same problem with my screen freezing while in the middle of typing. I went to the Apple store a week ago. I didn't have any problems at the store. they replaced the screen that moment. Told me it had something to do with the sensors in the screen. Life was good for about 2 days. Issue started back up already. The replacement was just the screen. Hope they can just give me a new phone. I thought it was my case. Turns out the same either in a case or not. I don't have a proctective film on the screen. This is my first experience with Apple iphone's . I've only had my iphone 5 since Feb. and had the first replacement of one due to a power button failure with in 3 months of owning it. Now the screen issues. Im very dissapointed.

Hi,

I also having the same problem of unlock sceen frozen afer updating to ios7.

Previously i did hard restart bt now i found a temporary solution.

We have noticed that siri is working we use that in this situation.

Solution:

We need to remove that passcode first.

We need to on the internet or wifi always.

In case of screen forzen while unlock use siri to open contacts or any message.

Siri will surely unlock ur frozen screen.

I am using same procedure while i am facing the problem.

Use this if i feel it was working with u e phone.

I too am having the same problem, I kept calling my carrier who eventually told me I needed to take it to an apple store. I did last Tuesday they gave me a new phone and the next day this one does the same. I am going back to apple today but i have a feeling it's a problem in all the 5s. I will see what they do today but I am unhappy with the phone issue and don't know if they will be able to resolve this.

Holy crap ! samething. If i touch the aluminium border, it works fine.

Also one thing which i noted here is at home when I charge, the screen is responsive during charging and all. But in office, it acts weirdly. Am assuming it might be due to some earthing problem.

Remove the cover and charge and dont use it while charging. ****.

after monthes of trying to find out whats happening , i found out that, my ipone 5 have the touchscreen crazy when the LTE is a weak signal. i guess thats for it need a huge amount of power to keep flowing. some how it doesn't keep up with good earthing .when i turned it of, it workes very fine but for sure the internet speed is dowen.but no freezing at all .maybe connecting to a charger or touching the metl frame make a good earthing and screen come alive again,.but as i told you ,if you have this problim, just look for a good lte signal place, or turn Lte off. tell they fix it

I am having similar problem & am having to return my iPhone 5c for the second time within 15 days of purchase. My touchscreen on BOTH iPhones has a dead spot on right side of screen. I cannot change buttons in notifications & apps & games will not work properly when they need me to touch screen on right side, which is often! Can't believe I am having to return my iPhone a second time for same problem. But different from your problem mine is same on or off charger. Can't find problem on here but when u google problem people are saying its a widespread problem with iPhone 5c & 5s.

Was a solution ever found? I am currently having the issue of the screen jumping or acting erratic when trying to scroll. In addition to the that, when clicking in one area it tends to click in another at the same time and causing for the action I desire not to occur but for another to happen. Looking thru some of the posts and I see no other solution has been brought up except taking it to the Genius Bar and obtaining a new one or is there another solution?
