The iPad cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (1140).

Since updating my iPad to iOS 6 and updating iPhoto to 9.4, I have been receiving the error The iPad <name of my iPad> cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (1140).

The syncing seems to be centered around photos. I used to have the box checked next to "Sync Photos from iPhoto" and now the only way that I can get the iPad to finish sync without error is to uncheck that box.

Any ideas how to fix this problem or what that code is?

A couple things that I should mention:

1) Photo Stream is Off on my iPad.

2) If you click on the Photo app it shows that there are no photos on the iPad. Screen says No Photos or Videos - You can take photos and videos using the camera, or sync photos and videos onto your iPad usining iTunes.

3) If I go to Settings > General > Usage > Photos & Camera it shows that I have 4.2 GB of data used by photos and camera. Clicking on it, it shows that 3.7 GB is Photo Stream and 551 MB is Photo Library.

4) If I got to the same usage screen on my iPhone 4 running iOS 6, Photo Stream is listed as 1.5 GB.

I can't seem to figure out how to get rid of the space on the iPad, but I assume this error as something to do with iTunes thinking there is a library on the iPad that isn't there. That's just me assuming though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2 options.

OPTION 1: Go to settings, general, scroll down to "Reset", Select "Reset All Settings".

It'll reboot your iPhone and possibly fix your issue.

OPTION 3: Reinstall IOS 6.0<><> 2 ways to do it. Download the official IPSW and restore your phone via iTunes. Or Go to settings, general, scroll down to "Erase All Content and Settings", Select it.

It'll reboot your iPhone and possibly fix your issue

I just spent 90 minutes on the phone with Apple support about this issue - they're definitely aware that it's a problem and it appears to be a bug in the latest version update of iPhoto that stems from an album or slideshow being associated with a song in iTunes that has an ampersand (&) in the song name or album name. Somehow a song like that has been associated with *every* album in my library, and changing the song name and/or deleting albums doesn't fix it.

I was told that the easiest option would be to simply deselect the "sync photos" option in iTunes, choose "keep photos" when asked, and just sit tight for a soon-to-be-released update to address the problem.

In my case, syncing the device is more important than adding a couple of new photos, so I chose the suggested path and will wait and see what comes along by way of updates in the next little while.

The tech also said that the problem with being able to only select to sync all photos instead of being able to manually select albums is a known new bug and should also be addressed in that update as well.

There's no instant answer for this one, unfortunately, but at least a solution seems to be on the way.

I found the fix for this problem in another thread. A contributor named Delany has the fix.

It's a bug in iPhoto associated with the & character.

The fix: go into iPhoto and play a slideshow of all your photo albums. Create a custom music playlist for each album with a song that does NOT have an & character in it. Click play after setting up the custom playlist for each album.

That's it. This will reset a data file in your iPhoto library that contained unreadable "&" characters.

That would work if there were only one problem, but the XML shows that the software has added an associated song with an ampersand to every single on of my dozens of albums, despite the fact that I've never created a slideshow.

When I follow the above instructions, I find that iTunes shows no songs are associated with the albums, which is expected as I've never created any slideshows, either with or without music.

So, this isn't really a practical solution, as there's no guarantee that iPhoto won't simply reassociate the problematic song with the albums. I've also changed the name of the song that shows up in the xml to remove the ampersand, but that didn't solve the problem.

This is no doubt why Apple is working on a software update.

Got the 1140 trying to sync my iPod.

Its iPhoto causing the 1140 error.

Go to iTunes, and select Photos. Then UNCLICK Sync Photos from iPhoto. (Keep the photos, do not delete for now.)

Click APPLY.

Then SYNC.

Any new songs will be transferred after the sync.

You can click Sync Phots from iPhoto, but will still get the 1140 error, but without messing the contents, if you wish. Hopefully, iPhoto will be fixed at a later date to sync your photos.
