The iPad cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (1140).

Since updating my iPad to iOS 6 and updating iPhoto to 9.4, I have been receiving the error The iPad <name of my iPad> cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (1140).

The syncing seems to be centered around photos. I used to have the box checked next to "Sync Photos from iPhoto" and now the only way that I can get the iPad to finish sync without error is to uncheck that box.

Any ideas how to fix this problem or what that code is?

A couple things that I should mention:

1) Photo Stream is Off on my iPad.

2) If you click on the Photo app it shows that there are no photos on the iPad. Screen says No Photos or Videos - You can take photos and videos using the camera, or sync photos and videos onto your iPad usining iTunes.

3) If I go to Settings > General > Usage > Photos & Camera it shows that I have 4.2 GB of data used by photos and camera. Clicking on it, it shows that 3.7 GB is Photo Stream and 551 MB is Photo Library.

4) If I got to the same usage screen on my iPhone 4 running iOS 6, Photo Stream is listed as 1.5 GB.

I can't seem to figure out how to get rid of the space on the iPad, but I assume this error as something to do with iTunes thinking there is a library on the iPad that isn't there. That's just me assuming though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This worked for me. I deleted two slideshows that I had in iPhoto that were years old (I didn't even remeber that I had made them) and after deleting them, the sync is moving along smoothly. I guess the characters in the songs used were the issue.

I ended up just getting rid of the offending album and that worked too. It also fixed the problem of the "Selected albums, Events, and Faces, and automatically include (no Events)" radio button not be selectable. After I performed a successful sync with Photos included, the radio button then became selectable.

I guess the potential problem is that if you have to initially sync your entire iPhoto library to be able to get to the selectable "Selected albums, Events, and Faces, and automatically include (no Events)" radio button, the size of your iPhoto libray could be larger than the storage capacity of your iPhone or iPad. Hopefully a bug fix is in the works.

I too am affected by this. iPhone 5, synced fine until I upgraded iPhoto Library. Now it won't sync unless I turn off iPhoto syncing. Great. And now we wait for a fix.

This worked for me as well.

Open iPhoto. Click "photos" on the left (meaning all your photos). Click "slideshow" at the bottom of the window. Choose a custom song from your itunes. Once it starts playing, close iPhoto, close iTunes.

Then re-open iTunes and try to sync. Should work.

dunno what the glitch is, and it's stupid, but at least I'm now able to sync.

I repaired permissions in disk utility and stopped synching photos and that worked for me. I never had a slideshow with a song set up, so not sure what the deal is. Now on to trying to get my iphone to connect to wifi.

Hi, by now you probably know that Apple has updated iPhoto and fixed the problem. Go to "Software update" and intstall iPhoto update. Go to iPhoto and open it and then it will fix your library and then you can sync away. Thanks everyone for all the great advice.

This solution worked for me:

Disconnect iPad

Update iPhoto to v 9.4.1.

Restart computer.

Open iPhoto-->Preferences-->General-->Connecting camera opens: *CHANGE to "No Application".

Quit iPhoto.

Connect iPad and sync via iTunes

After sucessful sync of apps, music, photos, etc., open iPhoto and go back into Preferences and change the connecting camera opens option back to: iPhoto
